Oh, where do I even begin with the cinematic catastrophe that is "Point Blank"? Let me tell you, sitting through this trainwreck of a film felt like a form of cruel and unusual punishment, and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. You'd think that with a title as promising as "Point Blank," you'd be in for a thrilling ride full of adrenaline-pumping action and heart-stopping moments. But oh no, what we got instead was a haphazard mess that made me question the very nature of filmmaking. First off, let's talk about the ridiculously predictable and offensively lazy decision to kill the black guy first. Really? In 2024, we're still resorting to this tired, overused trope? It's as if the writers didn't even bother to think beyond the most cliched stereotypes. The character had so much potential, but no, they decided to dispose of him within the first ten minutes, rendering his entire existence pointless. It's not just lazy writing; it's downright insulting. And then there's the main character, who is supposedly our hero. Slightly Asian and, unfortunately, catastrophically bad at acting. I mean, who cast this guy? He delivers his lines with all the emotion of a damp sponge and moves through the action scenes like he's wading through molasses. His wooden performance makes it impossible to root for him, and by the halfway mark, I was secretly hoping he'd get taken out just so I wouldn't have to endure another second of his dreadful acting. Now, about the boss - he's too attractive. Yes, you heard me right. This guy looks like he just stepped off the cover of GQ, and it's completely distracting. Every time he's on screen, I found myself more interested in his perfectly chiseled jawline and immaculate hair than the plot, which, let’s face it, isn't saying much. How am I supposed to take this character seriously when he looks like he should be modeling suits rather than running this government agency? His character lacks any depth or menace, reducing him to nothing more than eye candy. The fight scenes - oh, don't even get me started on the fight scenes. Horribly crafted would be putting it mildly. It's as if the choreographer was blindfolded and throwing darts at a board to come up with the moves. The sequences are slow, clunky, and utterly devoid of any semblance of realism. At one point, I swear I saw one of the henchmen waiting for his cue to attack, standing awkwardly in the background like a high school drama extra. It's laughable, really, except for the fact that it's supposed to be intense and thrilling. Which brings me to the director, a man who goes by the ludicrously pretentious name of Maverick. Maverick! As if he's some kind of maverick in the world of filmmaking. In reality, he's horribly incompetent, with no sense of pacing, tension, or narrative coherence. His idea of direction seems to be to point the camera at something and hope for the best. There’s no vision, no artistry, no semblance of anything remotely resembling competence. And yet, in this steaming pile of mediocrity, there’s one glimmer of something almost worthwhile: the cinematography. It's the only saving grace of this disaster. The camera work is out of this world, with beautifully framed shots and breathtaking landscapes that almost, just almost, make you forget about the horrendous acting and laughable plot. The cinematographer deserves a medal for making this dumpster fire look visually stunning, an achievement akin to polishing a turd. "Point Blank" is a masterclass in how not to make an action film. It's a tragic example of wasted potential, hampered by a lead actor who couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, a distractingly attractive boss, and fight scenes that would make a toddler’s playfight look like a Bruce Lee epic. And at the helm of it all is Maverick, a director so inept it's a wonder he managed to get this project off the ground at all. If you value your time and sanity, do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from this debacle. You'll thank me later.
