Dazai Osamu: A Reflection of No Longer Human
Переглядів 35 тис.Рік тому
Yozo Oba is one of the most prolific characters from Post-war Japanese Literature. No Longer Human, despite being published 80 years ago, remains insightful, moving and relatable, especially to young adult readers. It has often been mistaken as Dazai Osamu’s true autobiography, but how closely does it relate to the Dazai we know from Bungou Stray Dogs? Thanks to CyanCat for commissioning me! Fo...

I’m really shy. But I just joined a book club and your literary analysis is helping me get the courage to actually show up 😊
hey! i was wondering how do i pick a lens to do an analysis of a book if i haven’t read it yet? would i do that after, if so how would i know to gather the write evidence? What type of annotation would i do while reading?
for a first read-through, I always suggest to just take basic notes in a notebook or on your phone, for example, and only truly begin annotating & analysing on the second or third read! that way you'll already have a grasp of the text, you'll know what interests you, and you'll notice things you didn't on the first read :3
@@bluemoon.f4vthank you!!
i'm going to uni next year to study literature and this video really helped me to get even more hyped hhahahah, thank you so much, it's an incredible video :)
Thanks!
please post the poetry analysis video 🙏
This was so helpful and really interesting!
Woah, I might use The Rule of Three in my book to show how my character deals with a certain situation, could it work...? It did satisfy me, I didn't even catch onto it!
Oh to bad she is not Muslim, I know a Korean young man that is perfect match.
i like girls
This is absolutely life changing. I have felt very intimidated about my undergrad journey in Literature, and this video has helped me greatly, love you so much❤
Awesome!
My bf sent me this because he told me that he always resonated best with Dazai from bsd and struggles immensely with mental stuff. I want to know him better and his favourite book has been No Longer Human for the longest time even without bsd and this has helped me immensely in understanding him better. That one scene with the fireworks between Atsushi and Dazai in bsd WAN made me actually start fucking sobbing. It reminded me all too well of the moment I realized my best friend (now bf) was never joking about wanting to k*ll himself and I told him exactly what Atsushi said to Dazai in that scene. It was the moment I started questioning all our interactions and started actually reading between the lines about who my partner truly is and how his incessant joking about his depression was really him being depressed and just wanting to pretend to be happy to distract from it.
Summer?
I might read this book as someone who feels like a societal outcast themselves.
picked up les miserables, ended up here
Hey, just discovered your channel, this was a really nice and informative video + I really wanted to read Hellscreen, but I've read online that is actually pretty hard to find a nice translation of It, so thanks for that too. P.s. Congrats for your top surgery!!
Came for the literature stayed for bsd 😭❤

tysm this video was so helpful! 💞
tldr; So first you have to learn how to use limes. Using limes you can get to deriviations and deriviation rules. Finally you can do integration and multi-variable derivatives. From there you can go to linear algebra or regression or any number of higher topics in discrete numbers. Hope this helps
SHE'S A STAY Y'ALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

The comparative/synergistic part reminded me of when I was kinda info dumping on my mom about the connections I found between Helter Skelter(Movie) and the Manga series Kasane, both have numerous differences between each other and one of them definitely has a but more of a super natural element but its the fact that both characters are so obsessed with the concept of beauty that it drives them to do horrible things just to achieve the fame and validation that they believe will fix everything, these deeply insecure women doing drastic thing's in the chase to maintain and keep the beauty they where deeprived of which lead to there down fall is tragic especially in terms of Kasane but nevertheless still very tragic in how Helter skelter in it's last moments(excusing the very last scene) its been awhile since I've looked at both media so I apologize if I missed something but just wanted to give my two cents
I love critical analysis (of all media, not just books) and I'm pretty experienced with it academically and recreationally, but this is the clearest breakdown of critical analysis I've ever heard. I feel like I still learned something -- like things that were tangled up in my head are now neatly sorted What I'm trying to say is thank you!
Yozo seems more akin to Fyodor, he sees humans as devils, they see that humans are demons, however, the people that read them see them as demons, however the people that atually talk to him see them as angels.
Witch, u tryna sell me Emoji's😂
Thanks sm for these vids bc i wanna think critically about the books I'm reading and writing about them bt didn't know how to startt

Literary Analysis 101-Advance, when?
This video is so good wholly shit! It's so interesting to watch and I love the way you talked about the similarities Dazai and Yozo share! I never see any videos talking about their similarities so this was definitely refreshing to see! (Btw could you explain more what you meant with Dazai and Yozo being the most human? I always thought the most human person in BSD was Chuuya tbh. Sorry! I just didn't fully understand<3)
I’ve always, always wanted to delve deeper into the world of understanding and resonating with literature, and this is probably my biggest hope for this dream since I was told I couldn’t make a good career out of lit. You’ve made every point, technique and example SO accessible, and I’m beyond excited for your poetry analysis guide!! I followed along with your Edward the Emu reading. At the end, it really put into perspective how different our thinking processes were; namely how I arrived at vague conclusions (similar to yours) versus how you built up your statements brick-by-brick. It was incredible how well you articulated yourself, like solving a puzzle! I never knew something as artsy as literature could be broken down and simplified the same way maths problems could be solved. Then, you highlighted how much more significant EtE was in a queer person’s lens - as that queer person, it didn’t occur to me that this story could feel less resonating with any other point of view. You truly are amazing at this!
Wow! I was not expecting so much metaphoric symbolisms in this little Childrens' book. I think, I need to read a lot more of them. So, if anyone or you have more recommendations, I would really appreciate it. So, here's my analysis: There are, I think, three very important moments in this little story than pinpoint's why I was moved by this story. Two of them are actual, i.e., from the actual story, and one of them is a hypothetical scenario, an alternative ending that popped into my mind spontaneously when Emu was with the snakes. The actual ones encapsulate the theme (of my interpretation) inside this story; the source of most of our problems are actually inside us and courage is the most respect worthy way to face these problems. And the third one, the hypothetical one, it goes beyond this story. The first critical point in the story is Emu's way of approaching the solution to his problem. Emu was bored, or at least, that's what we get upon a superficial glance. But I think, here the word 'bored' was used to masterfully actually boil down some truly complex emotional, existential, and philosophical dilemmas we in inevitably have to dwell in as a byproduct of living or having a 'consciousness' or having metacognition. What interests me is the fact that Emu didn't just choose to flee the Zoo for good. He instead chose to be with other animals whom he thought would bring more excitement, i.e., the antidote to 'boredom, his problem, into his life. I think, the reason he chose the latter path is because the source of the problem, in reality, is not his environment or predicament, the source is something inside him. So, it doesn't matter whether he leaves the Zoo or not. Unless he confronts and overcomes what is inside him, the problem will remain. Now, here I want to clarify something. The comments the visitors on make about the various animals and later Edwina about Edmo, they are, in light of this interpretation, not actually voices from without, but within, within Emu himself, his conscience and/or his 'truer self' that guides him to his true salvation, to his truth. And this theme comes to a completion when, at last, on the second critical moment, when Edmo realizes, through Edwina representing his final realization, that the source of his suffering is actually not outside of him, it is very much inside of him, and thus it is not in searching for a more 'exciting' place that he will find his solution. Furthermore, he realizes another truly amazing fact, how much empowered he has become now that he knows he is not at the mercy of his predicament and all that effort he directed towards the outside can be turned inside, and if he does so, he will be free. And I think, it is this observation his conscience making about him - Edmo will not just flee from the Zoo, instead he is willing to face the problem head on, he is willing to embrace the chaos - that has been represented through Edwina's comment: "You're the best thing I have seen since I came to the Zoo!". I have touched onto the hyphotisising a bit earlier. But here is what it really means when analysed closely. The third scene is about when he was with the snakes. A thought that the snakes are going to eat him popped into my sing spontaneously during this part of the story. And they absolutely could have. Then the story would've turned into a parable along the line of 'Curiosity killed the cat' or something. This point leads to a deeper theme that goes beyond this or any other books or stories for that matter. The fact that I am hypothesising alternating endings, and it is still making sense, is at the core of why we humans question about the nature of life, universe, and all the big and small stuffs. Why there is such different philosophies coexisting together as solutions to the same questions or problems. This multiplicity is the result of the inherent complexity and richness attached to the universe and everything it holds within it. ---- Wow! It was really really fun to do!! I think I have found another hobby, or perhaps another passion!
Smart as beautiful! 😍
off topic but your room is such a dream TT
you would make a great teacher this was so helpful :)
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, you basically taught me more than my profs who only yap about the texts rather than Actually teaching us how to apply this techniques and analysis, this is such a life saver and changing video and I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS 😭❤
I never thought I would relate to an emu
hey, i just wanna say this video is really helpful!! ive been unsatisfied with my results in my literature class and ive seen people put out some fascinating analysis of media i like that i can follow but i can never understand how they do it so well. this actually really helps with both of those points!! tysm!
I decided to open this video for fun but I was definitely surprised by how well you taught critical analysis as well as Edward the Emu story! If we look through Edward story from a queer lens, there is definitely more layers to it. He may initially tried on others’ identities since he was bored (which we found to not be the case), but it could also be contributed to his societal confinement. Relating this to my own experiences, being sapphic in a heterosexual community can feel very isolating and you don’t feel validated in your experiences as there was no one else quite like you. Even after figuring out I didn’t experience sexuality the same as others I knew, I still struggled with self-identity regardless. I thought it would be fun to try being a masc lesbian, but dressing up in different ways didn’t change who I am. I thought I had to put on so many labels on myself to make it easier to identify and easier to recognize for my own identity, which I found out didn’t change anything about me aside from external validation. Now that I found friends who share similar experiences and like me for me, I realized that I am still who I am, and it just so happened that I like girls. This relates back to how Edward kept on trying to become other animals he is not because it was the best thing to be by others’ standards and finally finding happiness in being validated in his own existence, not having to change himself to be anything else and just for being him.
Ya can’t go wrong with the colors of the trans flag. Soo darn pretty 💙🏳️⚧️💙
