View the winners of our photography competition for 2024 ⭐
This summer, we held the latest iteration of our annual photography competition - and the winners have now been announced! With over 600 photographs submitted across the country, whittling down the entries was no mean feat. Staff from across Norfolk Wildlife Trust were invited to shortlist and judge our entries this year, which will form our annual calendar, and be exhibited at the Forum in Norwich, and at NWT Cley Marshes.
This year’s overall winner was Stuart Merchant and his incredible image of two emperor dragonflies, whilst Roman Czajlowski’s kingfisher in the rain took the tightly fought position of runner up.
Our best young photographer was 10 year old Tyler Hood, who impressed us with his excellently captured thick-legged flower beetle on buttercup.
*Please note that the photographer of the water vole is Geoff Snelson, not Nelson.

Two newly hatched rare stone curlew chicks caught on camera!

Each year, we set up a webcam at Weeting Heath in Norfolk, to capture rare stone curlews as they hatch their chicks. Nicknamed goggle-eyed plovers and wailing heath chickens, they're unmistakably odd-looking birds! Stone curlews declined dramatically until there were only around 150 pairs remaining in the 1980s. The decline was linked to the loss of habitat, as well as changes in farming techni...

Why we need to #StopTheWesternLink

In 2019 Norfolk County Council (NCC) shared their plans to link the end of the current Norwich Northern Distributor Road (NDR), now called Broadland Northway, on the A1067 with the A47 near to Easton - the proposed ‘Norwich Western Link’ (NWL). We have considered the road proposals in detail as NCC’s plans have progressed, and continue to raise our grave concerns about its impact on wildlife. T...

It’s International Women’s Day! Here’s to all of the inspiring women working and volunteering on our reserves, in our office, and at our visitor centres 💚 This year, we wanted to debunk the bonkers myth that practical conservation work is for men only 🙄 At NWT, 36% of our reserves staff are women, and this number is rising year on year. But don’t just take our word for it, watch and learn from ...
Wilder Wardens: What does nature mean to young people?
Переглядів 2717 місяців тому
Could you help young people to make a difference for wildlife? Since early 2023 we have been running Wilder Wardens, an initiative which invites young people aged 11-16 to meet at one of our nature reserves each month, where they carry out practical conservation tasks alongside a reserve warden. The scheme has been a resounding success, with our Wilder Wardens making a real difference to their ...

I was on Sweetbriar marsh 2/9/2024 at 5. 15 in the morning sat and waited for daylight. Got a couple of nice early morning landscapes plus photos of Blackcap Bullfinch and Blue tit. Beautiful place to relax and meet like minded people. Thanks Richard a Woodhouse.
Thanks for your comment, Richard - we always love to hear stories of people enjoying Sweet Briar. If you ever take any photos you'd like to share with us/that we can share publicly, please send them over to info@norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk - for the attention of the PR & Comms team.
so cool to see...bit by bit....
We're getting there!!
Beautiful footage, thank you for sharing.
i love Mile Cross, this shows how much people in the community work together to make a nicer place for the next generation. You guys rock!
will we never learn? work with nature not against it should be the mantra.
Wonderful moment .Thanks Richard woodhouse
Beautiful
First year we've missed them. We were a little too early. But still wonderful to see them online. Thanks to NWT.
Beautiful.
what a fantastic Bird.
As with all link roads and by-passes, they will build along it, with shops, industrial estates and housing. Then the road will become choked with traffic and then in about 15 years' time, there will be calls for another link road or by-pass, with more infill development. Then the pattern will repeat, ad infinitum. . . . until there is nothing green left to protect.
I totally agree we cannot allow this terrible road to be built and destroy the wonderful Norfolk countryside. Please do all you can to STOP this DEVASTATION
Oh wow, so you say clye, not clay?!
Wonderful video. Could listen to Roy and his life/views for hours.
All those avocets,marvellous.
cant fight progress! londoners have run out of land in essex and suffolk to build on, so they have to go somewhere. plus norfolk is just a bit more picturesque…for now. there i was thinking bats could kill any development project in seconds, but apparently not. you learn something new every day.
Sea levels aren't rising, tectonic plates move and the land sinks below another continent, you can't stop earth doing earth things and if people want to try they should do it without taxpayer funds.
What an amazing perspective shift that is!
Good luck. We lost our park for the commonwealth games. Once thay make plans. It's too late. ❤😢
Where is your petition?
Very emotive claims are being made but not one practical alternative is put forward. One campaigner spoke of "innovative and modern ways" to spend the money, but failed to detail them; so her film clip just contained meaningless words. Not convinced at all. It is negative campaigning - nimbyism.
How about a speed camera type device, except instead of monitoring just speed it would also be used to photograph every number plate going through the local villages. If it isn't registered to a local address then the driver gets a fine, or toll fee, however one wants to see it. That might deter some people if it was a tenner every time. I also think the accusation of nimbyism is unfounded, it is their 'backyard' but it's also home to what are now quite rare ecosystems in the UK, and rare UK species live there. In fact if they were NIMBYs then why aren't they celebrating a road that is supposed to spare local villages from excessive traffic (no doubt many of the current commuters will continue to drive through the villages, reasoning that it's a bit quieter now and their journey will be faster!)? They are people who care about nature, not NIMBYs. It has been shown time and time again, over many decades, that new roads result in more journeys made, they don't effectively reduce the amount of congestion overall, though some might be redirected from specific routes such as the one currently used through the villages.
@@danyoutube7491 OMG not another green zealot. Still no practical alternative .
@@willisdj51 Lol, a zealot for not wanting to lose yet more irreplaceable nature for the sake of something that will not do much good.
The "not much good" you refer to will be the removal of through traffic on the rat runs around Weston Longville, Ringland and the surrounding lanes. You can carry on being negative about this problem, and that is nimbyism, but to be taken seriously you have to be realistic and come up with a practical alternative - that's the failure that undermines the campaign
PS Clearly you will not be persuaded otherwise, so to carry on is just pointless. I'm not responding any more but if you feel the need to have the last word please do so but I don't need that sort of little boost.
BAN ALL NEW ROADS STOP DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY!
Is there a petition to sign?
I can't believe these terrible proposals are STILL being seriously considered by councils. These roads never address the actual problems they're supposed to alleviate and once those habitats and woodlands are destroyed. They're gone forever. If you want to see how these roads are ineffective, just look up the history of the ring road that was forced through Wells in Somerset in the 80s....
You can see why we're the most ecologically depleted country in the entire world.
It is so sad that those in power rarely have any consideration for the natural world, development means profit ,end of story.
Can a link to the campaign be added to the description please?
What exactly is the long-term end goal of the government's "growth at all costs forever" mantra? How could it possibly lead to anything other than an entire nation of concrete with absolutely ZERO space remaining for soil either as natural or agricultural land? What an impressively unintelligent way to run a society, country, nation, culture, etc.
The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the WOLRD, I really truly hope this road never gets built 🙏 well done and thank you to all the incredibe orgs fighting it ❤️
Heartbreaking to see the continued stupidity of mankind with proposed projects like this road...
The UK ranks very low in biodiversity, and yet we continue to push these ill-considered develeopments.
Low! We're the worst.
The most nature depleted country in the world
I hope that they will protect these woodlands!
Vote green at the election
We don't need more roads there is enough roads already this country as far to many people get rid of all the migrants and crimenal coming in . Then we won't need more roads and villages the country is losing its beauty and its wildlife .
Be angry at your government, the housing crisis driving these agendas was wholly predictable, the economy crashing post brexit, predictable....Blaming immigrants, predictable gammon behaviour. Short sighted tories wreaking havoc for next in line, damaging waterways, nature and the NHS beyond the pale what they got away with, corruption has been normalised!
Thank you for making this statement, Norfolk Wildlife Trust are the hero's in this story! council pressing on it just astoundingly ignorant in the face of science and common sense! It's not the 'will of the people'
Here we go again there’s no escape from it.
This should have more views and be watched by every politician and school child who has a stake in the future of our coastline and countryside. Well said Sir David!
i see young people with positive vibes. i subscribed
Amazing video
what happened to all the wildlife living in the pond before it was humanised for farm grants
This area that is being spoken about is brilliant...
Sweetbriar marsh has been a very big part of my life for about 65 years I'm so pleased and happy the NWT has now purchased the site looking forward to its progress. Richard a woodhouse
goverment be like fecked it but I say feck them, SAVE OUR NATURE
Is a great achievement. As someone who donated, I strongly hope it's not going to be opened up to too much public access. Marriots way already goes through it as well as plenty of paths. Please keep plenty of it safe for nature to live undisturbed. The ideas about getting more volunteers involved in management are obviously good.
Stop the road!
How you going to encourage people to drive less and reduce traffic volumes? For starters how do you stop all motor sports leisure going on all about? I mean crikey you live within earshot of inner ring road or arterial roads? Why does nobody seem to notice the noise? You want less need for more roads you have to tackle the traffic standards and the people who keep them low with their inconsiderate habits.
A wonderful and moving film. Thank you for standing up for wildlife!
Thanks for posting this. I am now fuming at the Council for what they are planning to do. I have viewed the video on "orlo", and that is totally worthless. No explanations, no details, no mention of the destroyed areas. What can I recommend? SEE BELOW. Start a Crowd Fund page. Raise money, Tell the Council that you have the money fight for years. They'll pause at that. Then insist that if it is built it removes only dead trees, no animal habitats, and allows only carbon neutral vehicles to use the road. They'll pause again. Involve all the charities that look after Wildlife and Protected Species of Flowers, get some demonstrations organised. That will cause serious pauses. Contact ALL TV and RADIO channels to gain support from a wider pool of supporters. That should generate a lot of pauses. Let Norfolk County Council know that come the next elections the Anti-Norwich Western Link Road activists will be working against the Tories who support the scheme. They'll pause more at that since they will lose all the monies they fleece from the residents. I sincerely hopes this helps. We really do need to stop the townies/city-folks who think that a green open space is worthless and is only an undeveloped building site. David
Just had a holiday here & had the most amazing holiday. Would love to have seen David Attenborough on a boat telling us the names of the birds. We ended up buying a book from Ludham shops so that we could identify the wildlife. We saw some rare breeds too ;)
Love Norfolk and have been a member of Norfolk Wildlife Trust since FOREVER ! Want to have my ashes scattered at the end of Blakeney Point among the seals , the waves and if it’s Summer, the terns ! Stone curlews and stoats are really something to see at Weeting Heath .
