Lovely video. I was born in '73 and grew up in the Middle East and had an Akai GXC-39D back then. I had it from the 70's right up to the mid 90's and it had a FeCr selector as well as the Limiter feature. In effect, the Limiter is like an earlier version of ALC (Auto Level Control)...As you rightly said, it prevents the recording levels from going into distortion. However, the peak level indicator on several machines from this era was another aid for setting recording levels manually. I've always preferred "Limiter" to ALC as ALC tends to attenuate the recorded signals to lower levels than on the original recording. Great Deck and very well worth preserving.
@sergei-6316 Thank you for your nice message. Akai's GXC's top loading decks were very popular and robust. I have the GXC-46D as well. You may watch that video as well, as I've uploaded a video on that, too :) The limiter function rightly said is far more accurate than ALC. Limiter switch doesn't distrub the bias settings while recording. Hence, let's one to make great recordings :)
price...?

Nice one🎉
I just scored one of these on Ebay. A wonderful machine indeed!
@Seansmusicvault Congratulations and Enjoy!
Hi there, many thanks for this informative video and demo. Based on this video and some others on UA-cam, I've just bought a Akai GX-4000D but I'm wondering if it is functioning correctly. When you turn the track selector to 1-4 do you get sound only out of one speaker or does it still come out of both the left and right speakers? Thanks in advance for your reply!
@gordondaly3500 Congratulations on your new Akai GX-4000D. Nothing to worry, my friend :) This is a recording and playback feature. When Stereo is selected, the machine will record on track 1 and 3 of the tape (left and right channel). When 1-4 is selected, you can record a signal in mono through the left channel. Similarly, when you select 3-2, you can record a signal in mono through the right channel. This is a feature you may not be using, but it can come handy when you wish to mix down audio signals :) Once again, congratulations on your investment. Enjoy the beauty of analogue audio on R2R tape :)
@@VinylsFinal - thank you so much for the quick reply, I really appreciate you taking the time to send it! They are wonderful machines and I'm so glad to hear that in mono, the sound will come out either of the left or right speaker depending on whether you select 1-4 or 3-2. Thank you again!
@gordondaly3500 You are very welcome. You've got that spot-on right now! Record some audio and switch between source and tape while you are recording. You'll hear the beauty of your machine reproducing the audio off the tape :) Enjoy!
Incredible set up

Amazing collaboration! Musical Passion project across continents. Way to go Sami ! Never lose that passion
Your description with its emotion, honesty, and humbleness is very refreshing, sir. I am in the USA, but I will look up Haycross online. Thank you for an enjoyable video.
@AlanKinsella-nu4gm Thank you for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed. Do contact Matt from Haycross Audio. If you want only speaker crossovers, I am sure he can help and post to you.
Yes, thanks for reply. The equipment was at an audio store in California-- I volunteered there. Ironically, I'm struggling to make sense of Digital playback quality I cannot afford to buy new vinyl, so I am trying Tidal but it still comes across like the difference between video and film: video is thin, bright, and fatiquing. One oddity, however, is that recordings--just streaming MP3's from Octave Records (from PS Audio) sounds better than anything. Paul Mcgowen says it's his recordings in DSD. If you give them a listen, please let me know.
@AlanKinsella-nu4gm I must give it a listen, thanks. If Paul says it's his DSD recordings, it must be very good. I watch his short informative videos a lot :)
With the DSD he's able to record using little or no compression. He also uses minimalist miking and other best recording practices.
Very interesting. Thank you! I had a pair of Ditton 130s, I think, in 1985. I also had Celestion SL-600's. They had the aluminum cabinet with no resonance, and sensitivity was 83 db. The SL-600 and SL-6's came alive best with tube gear like Audio Research SP-10 preamp and 75+ watt per channel tube amps. A system with Oracle Delphi table, with high-end cartridge, SP-10, Audio Research D-250, and SL-600's with Kimber cable wire playing Jazz at the Pawnshop album sounded like live music. I will check out your other videos on Ditton 22 refurbishment.
@AlanKinsella-nu4gm Thank you for your comments. You've had some really high-end and serious audio equipment. Playing Jazz through that kind of system must be one great experience. The beautiful sound of analogue audio equipment is always pleasing to the ears. I do hope you like my other videos, too. Thank you once again.
Masterpiece
Quality!
Sami, You have concisely captured 100 years of Celestion history in 20 mins. Also great to see you carry a pair of classic 60 year old Ditton 10s in mint condition , I believe they have been upgraded as well. I was also wondering whether the makers of famous McIntosh Hifi systems have their roots tied with the founders of Celestion (Eric McIntosh). Interesting piece of history , well captured !
@SalmanGuest Thank you for your comment. Yes, the 10s capacitors were upgraded to poly film caps, which brings out more details from the drivers. That was Mcintosh USA, you were wondering. I'm glad you enjoyed this video 🫡
Great
Wow😮😮😮

Another great video!
Beautiful...where do you get these from....I'm looking for a few things...but so difficult to get good ones like these Will highly appreciate a reply
@nitinaghi You can find them on reverb, canuk audio, ebay, gumtree, market place. All depending on where you live and what you really want or need.
Great 👍
Our whole house is Alexa controlled. Lighting, heating etc. We have Sonos throughout our house. 9 zones. I did try the Alexa control for it but never liked it. I might revisit it now 😊. Great video
@haycrossaudio5474 Thank you, Matt. My home lighting system only (now vintage hifi too) is Alexa compliant 😜 If your sonos connect is chained between your pre and power amp, i trust you will like it. Do let us know how it goes whenever you revisit 🙂
Interesting.
Nice!

I have 2 pairs off matts speakers highly recommended great finish and sounds terrific
@@michaelvincent8306 Then we are square. I've also got 2 pairs refurbished. These Ditton 22s and also a pair of Gale Gold :) We are lucky to have Matt around.
I have a Sony PSX which I purchased in 1977 the year I first started work I actually used to sell Sony my one is also still working perfectly I have several cartridges that I use on it including a shure n75ed N95ed and an Ortofon Concord 30
@@garyrtatewaldersladeroadmo4967 So great to hear you are also still enjoying your Sony PSX turntable from the 70s
I have the less common black version.
@uncled39 Very nice. The black version is rare and better looking.
Just wow😮
One of a kind.
I have akai tape deck in 90' black color sir👍🇮🇩
@andreasbianconeri879 Those black Akai tape decks were top of the line decks, my friend. Some models in Japan were under the name A&D, yet still Akai.
A&D is very much Akai, and Akai used improved components under the hoods of A&D branded audio equipment.
I would have thought that magnetic information printed on metal would have been the first technology.
@andrewdean6963 Metal tape is a Type IV tape formulation. Similarly, Type I and Type II had their type of tape formulations. For some reason, Type III didn't even kick off. Even the newer cassette decks from the 90s didn't handle Type III tapes :)
❤
Awesome
Good one

Looks like a Toshiba model they done
@@UrbanoDagrippino You are right! Toshiba also made very similar portable stereos :)

Brought back so many memories! The Panasonic RX-C34 is a classic. I loved five-band equalizer and detachable speakers. It’s amazing that it’s still working after all these years, the one I have is dead.
@Ady-Insight You need to get your boombox restored to up and running condition.
❤
I was waiting for sound quality display. 😊
@kopanski2025 This deck in particular sounds stunning. Near to an open reel deck. I can't play it on youtube as we all have to respect copyrights.
This was a great video. Very detailed and informative. Your knowledge on this equipment really shines through. Great job
Thanks, Matt. Appreciate your kind words. ❤
Well done! So great to see these old beauties singing better than they have for a long time!
Sami , your room is like an 80s time capsule. You could go even back to 70s in the same ride . These machines were supposedly built to last for decades , with world class engineering and highest standards applied , something you don’t find today . Keep them coming !
@SalmanGuest Thanks, buddy! The reason to have them up and running to date clearly supports how well they were engineered and rolled out of the factory.
