I could sense the wokeness when we see the one Cardinal supporting LGBTQ+ rights, etc. but stuck with it, only to be beaten over the head with the mega woke ending. I felt betrayed by the film maker. There is no amount of story telling or cinemaphotography that will ever convince me this is OK and normal in society. Stop it Hollywood, just stop it.
Excellent mind blogginig!!!
This shit was on the nose as hell. The message of the film is that all the people who disagree with the filmmaker's politics are bad people, and racist.
I just watched The Conclave. Initially, I intended to praise the plot and Ralph Fiennes' outstanding performance-he's my favorite actor, after all. But then, out of nowhere, the "wokeness" crept in and completely derailed the movie, especially with its ending. The newly elected Pope turns out to be an obscure cardinal from Kabul, and… he has uterus. The latter half of the movie leaned heavily into "woke" themes: The first nominee from the "good side" was a cardinal who openly supported LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, and illegal immigration. The antagonist, unsurprisingly, was the ultraconservative Cardinal Cadesco, portrayed in an exaggeratedly negative light. And, of course, the election culminated with a transgender individual being chosen as Pope.
I left out the ending just because he was born that way, and it can happen in real life, but it's true they packed everything in that film without dedicating enough time to the issues they introduced. Making him intersex in the end felt unnecessary, a story like that would require an entire film on its own, especially since the Catholic community includes many conservative people.
Thank you for your insight on the movie!
The cinematography was beautiful. Wish there were more mid films where the drama is more calm like this one. And I think it’s crazy how over the film it’s revealed that the dead pope kinda orchestrated events and had plans and machinations already in place. We are just as clueless as the dean. Or it could be a theme of how God beat all of them and what God wanted ended up happening in the end anyways in a long round about way. So crisis of faith averted. Really shows how the story was based of a book. Idk. I think all movies have messages. It’s not abusing the fans. Some films have more clear or stronger messages than others. We can dislike or disagree with the message but we can’t say “this movie is bad because movies should not have messages, messages are bad”. Messages are the heart of films. Same with books and this film was based on a book, so they already had a story and message. And this is a movie about the Vatican, so even if they tried they couldn’t have made a movie without a strong controversial message. Even dry boring documentaries have messages and guide you along. Even scientific papers have up with the idea of removing all bias an d just showing data because it was found to be impossible, scientists just try to reduce it and control the bias and be informed by it. Trying to completely get rid of messages just ends up turning into denial of the messages still present.
Would you like to talk about a movie called Tarzan The Fearless 1933?

You can't fight in here, THIS IS THE WAR ROOM!
🤣
For me it's when George C Scott is walking backwards, trips and does that neat roll to right himself. Kubrick left it in despite it not being part of the script because he liked it. For a man so used to doing dozens of takes for the perfect one, it's funny the one with a big mistake is the one he liked most.
This moment added so much to his character. Thank you for sharing this interesting fact!
Yes I also wanted to go to some of their parties
