It’s all about the scale of the thing you control and the speed at which it can move. It’s also about how much playable space there is. In Totk with it being 74km^2, you can explore most of the map. Plus there is also other parts like the sky and depths that make it absolutely massive and the best part is. Generally it takes a couple of minutes to get from place to place that aren’t far from each other. Just running it could take probably at least an hour to do the whole map like running a lap. Just around the edges. it likely takes way longer. In Forza Horizon 5 still a great game but with a size if 110km^2 you're also moving at nearly 300mph or 480kmh in the fastest car. and generally at least 200kmh in every car. It can take you maybe 30 minutes to do a lap. bigger than totk but at the speeds you move it feels so much smaller.

Alot of these 'maps' are just voids, loading screen distances & copy paste environments. GTA vice city is not bigger than fallout 4 or GTA 3 in terms of playable spaces.
