Amazing small body guitar from Santa Cruz that packs a huge sound. I am so happy that I finally have the chance to own one of these guitars. They are made at just another level than the standard Gibsons and Martins. Recorded directly through an AEA N8 and TLM103 into an SSL2 straight into the Zoom 8QN camera. NO post editing or EQ. #acousticguitar #scgc #acousticmusic #boutiqueguitars

Amazing sounding new martin 00-28. Shortly after I got it, I installed the LR Baggs Anthem and did a full set up so that the action is low for fingerstyle and I just prefer nice low action. J45 vs Hummingbird? Newer addition

So obviously its not a J45 but the Southern Jumbo is just a dressed up version with more binding and inlays. Now this isn't on the same historic line as the Hummingbird I'm playing is, but it's the best sounding from the original line I've played, plus its had some play time to open up a bit so I figured that leveled the playing field. Pardon my ignorance, but I don’t understand why it’s a Southern Jumbo that you picked as the one modern guitar that is basically the same as the CW? I would have thought your Hummingbird would be the one that’s structurally the same?

    The newer one has a noticeable brighter tone to it, yet it still has that distinct Hummingbird richness on the bronze strings. The '68 has that unmistakable sound of richly pronounced bronze strings & typical diminished steel & a beautifully subdued reverberation that only time can give to a select wood instrument. They were designed with vocal accompaniment in mind & '68 is the last year for Brazilian Rosewood sides & screw on pick guards & first year of the bottom belly bridge (My personal favourite year actually)👍👍

    I just got this version, which seems the same as that one. It's a beautiful guitar for the money, and you make it sound great, I'm going to try and learn from you! *SNIP* New Kalamazoo KGN-12-F Oriole Pre-War Tribute Acoustic Guitar Flame Maple $369.00 Fox Guitars and the author of the book “The Other Brands of Gibson” presents a brand new tribute to the legendary pre-WWII Gibson-made Kalamazoo KGN-12 “Oriole” flat-top acoustic guitars. Construction features include: solid red spruce top with spruce x-bracing; flamed maple laminate sides and back (ladder-braced); solid maple neck; mahogany kerfed lining; 3-ply celluloid tortoise top binding and 1-ply tortoise back binding and matching tortoise heel cap and end stripe, 3-ply sound hole binding; C-profile maple neck with truss rod (adjustable inside the body below the fingerboard - wrench included); Vintage tinted glossy nitrocellulose lacquer finish, black head stock with white Kalamazoo logo and Oriole decal; High quality 18:1 individual tuners with ivory buttons; solid Indian rosewood fingerboard with MOP dots and ABS side dots, solid rosewood bridge with bone saddle and black ABS pins; bone nut; celluloid fire stripe pickguard. Guitar has a deep body that produces a fat resonant tone with plenty of punch akin to guitars with larger bodies. Great for strumming or finger-picking. Comes with custom printed padded case.

    I own and love a couple of Eastmans, but something seems to have happened to this brand that has practically destroyed its attractive prices. I got a Gibson L-00 walnut used but mint for 1000 bucks recently. Haven't seen this Eastman anywhere for under 1400. It's nice that their quality is being appreciated, but to me it was always a "great for the money" brand, not a "you get what you pay for" brand.

    • @sasquatchlife8836
      @sasquatchlife8836 17 днів тому

      Prices for all guitar brands have increased dramatically the past few years, not just Eastman. And honestly, even at $1,500 ish, you're not going to find a better guitar. I also have an Eastman E2D which is all solid with cedar top and sapele sides. Got it for $600 and it still sounds better than some guitars that are 4x it's price. So there are still steals to be had with Eastman.

    • @JohannesLabusch
      @JohannesLabusch 17 днів тому

      @@sasquatchlife8836 You're right. I bought both of my Eastmans used. In the case of the electric, a T64/v, it doesn't matter because it's slightly relic-ed anyway, and in the case of my 12-string jumbo, I got lucky with a mint condition instrument. Both are absolute killers and mainstays and I'm happy I own them. Got each of them for around 1000$, a couple of years ago. Seems impossible now. I don't think I ever went over 1200 bucks for any guitar.

    This was great to see on your channel. I know you’ve said, “you didn’t come here for the stories, you came to hear the guitar”. Well, I love a good story. Twenty-five years ago, a co-worker of mine was moving and noticed something in the corner of the attic that he hadn’t seen before. Lo and behold, it was a crappy original faux-croc Gibson cardboard case from 1961 with a beautiful LG-0 inside. It had one bent/broken tuning peg and someone put it up there and forgot about it. Amazingly, it weathered beautifully somehow and has no cracks, flat top, straight neck. I love the tortoise shell binding too! Well, co-worker asks me if I want to buy a broken vintage guitar, but before I get back to him he sold it for $300. I felt pretty dejected, until I learn who bought it. My old man worked at the same company and had worked with my co-worker years before. He had heard about it and bought it straightaway. So, let’s just say it’s in the family now. It’s a great living room guitar and records beautifully. The guitar is 63 years old, but that is old growth mahogany and the sound is unbelievable! Grabbing a slide or get into some old blues picking will conjure up the ghost of Robert Johnson. Thanks for bringing this “student model” guitar into the spotlight, it’s a gem.

    The 68' might be built with heavy X braces (before the dble X in norlin era). Would be interesting to see a side by side comparison with an older hummy. However, they both sound very nice, full with deep woody tones. As close as they might be, the new cooked top hummy will probably sound better than the old 68' in a few years. It has incredible overtones for a brand new guitar.

    I have a Fullers Edition AJ- it took a while to get used to the (big C) neck and the brighter sound from the Rosewood (over Mahogany on a J45) - I get more attached to it each time I play it. There’s a large size difference between the two, so yes. Also the top wood being a different species will also change the tone a little. Great review. I always look forward to a Unicorn. felt the tonewoods were too "woody" but not in a good way. My ears felt a lot of restraint and not much chime at all. Good if you played Black Sabbath and Neil Young in double drop D or DADGAD tuning. It looks very nice but it sounds like a what I would expect a unicorn of a guitar in Redwood over Walnut. I do have a Larrivee OM-3 which is Moon over Bhilwara and that Bhilwara is more of a mahogany adjacent type of EIR, it is discontinued now. Not sure if it was discontinued because of its Unicorn status or they just ran out of the woodpile. I love it though.

Gibson's QC has been quite poor for as long as remember especially considering the prices they charge the customer. My experience with big companies (guitar related or otherwise) has been usually like this, you're just a small number in their accounting database. A smaller workshop or a one-man luthier usually develops a personal connection with the end user.
