    One of my favorite things about Pokémon Emerald was how many of the new abilities and moves had effects outside of battle! I wish it was taken further. For example; what if pokemon with speed boost, or the move agility allowed you to move faster in the overworld. Maybe shadow sneak or phantom force could turn the player invisible, allowing you to avoid npcs.

    legends arceus is overreated and so is open world and breaking the original pokemon design. BW and BW2 were the peak of pokemon and unless they decide to come back to that style (yes, without the stupid open world) pokemon will never be as good as it once was. and, no, how many copies the games sell do not tell how good the games are

    Amazing video! I just wanted to point out that the reason Legends Arceus was seemingly thrown aside for Scarlet and Violet is because the Pokemon games are made by two internal teams! :) There's the "A" team that makes core series games, made up of veterans at the company, and the "B" team that has more junior developers and works on remakes, spinoffs, and one-off games like Lets Go and Legends

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Oh yeah, I was aware of this and just forgot to mention it in the video lol, these things happen. To be fair it could have been two hours long if I talked about everything. Thanks for pointing it out though, I do think it's good and important context! I'm still of the belief that the A team should have borrowed more from the B team. I'm a software developer and at most companies I've worked for, we borrow from other internal projects all the time. (Obviously not external ones though, that has weird legal implications)

    crfeature collector is hardly a genre if you just turn it into other genres. I like pokemon for the turnbased combat and pretty decent jrpg on top of it, farming and platforming is not in my interest while playing a pokemon game

      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Yeah I mean, I would like to see more spinoff games for the variety, I don't want the mainline ones to disappear forever But I don't think it would be a bad thing if they looked for ways to make those turn based combat mechanics a little more interesting for non-competitive players (hopefully without losing the fun for competitive players) Thanks for the comment!

    I think Pokémon is evolving, but in the actual meaning if the word, slowly. And yeah, we would see bigger changes between the games if they were more years apart, for example we would probably have a full open world right away without Wild Area and a segmented open wolrd in PLA. But the changes are happening and I think its great. GF obviously can't take the mainline games that start the generation and scramble their gameplay but thats what Legends are for, and since now we know Legends gonna be its own mainline series we can expect thats where the more experimental mechanics are gonna be, some might transfer to future games, some may not. The succesful things from PLA weren't going to make it into SV because in the 3 year dev cycle, the last couple of months is definitely not the time to implement new big mechanics like catching without battling, especially when most of the development time they had to deal with COVID and we saw what that did to the performance. But I cant wait for gen 10 to see what new they decide to implement. The writing wasn't always the best but I think in gen 9 they nailed it with the character writing and I hope they lean into that more in the future, because i didnt care about side characters like I did about Nemona, Penny, Arven, Kieran and Carmine in any of the previous games, the closest would be N but he's still far behind, and thats only one person

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Fun fact: I'm a developer too, and the dev cycle stuff with pokemon always astounds me. I just don't understand how their structure could ever possibly work. If I was there I'd be burnt out and unable to make a thing that runs well too lol I mean if we want to boil down everything to one single point, it would probably be that slow evolution is fine, but you have to do it right. It's tough to look at SV and say it was ready for release. If I were working on it I'd say it was a year or two away from being ready Overall I'm pretty happy with the experimentation they are doing because it shows they've got the right outlook for the franchise and if they keep going in that direction they'll eventually land somewhere pretty good You make a lot of really good points, thanks for the thoughtful comment!

  • @The_oli4

    Intresting take, i think they honestly just don't care that much about the games anymore. If you look at the pokemon revenue its only a small portion the series and the merch earn way more. The estimations are that the merch (trading cards included) is around 90% of the revenue (as of the numbers in 2022) mobile games are an other 5%. The games on consoles and the series just have to be good enough to make kids become new pokemon fans and buy the merch. On an other note I think slime rancher does a good version of collecting creatures without the jrpg aspect.

    • @Cosmosis

      They definitely care, just look at the environmental storytelling in Pokémon Legends Arceus

  • @azure6912
    @azure6912 7 місяців тому

    I can't agree with you here. arceus works *BECAUSE* it's a spinoff, the mainline games can't and shouldn't change to the degree you suggest because of how big the competitive scene is. not accessing most of the system isn't important for the kids because they're kids, and those who are more grown up and enjoy the gameplay loop invest time to learn systems impose restrictions and enjoy the game in forms such as nuzlocke and PVP. VGC is an actual E-Sport, with local, national, international and world tournaments held regularly, breaking away too much could very easily kill that industry. Also, Palworld is a fine game I'm not going to bash it to defend pokemon there's no point, but Palworld is a survival game first and a monster collector second, and sure if you like that kind of thing it's a perfectly good game. But Palworld's use of Pals is contrary to the main theme of EVERY Pokémon game, that being you, a child going through a coming-of-age/right-of-passage, forging connections and overcoming through those connections, a force that instead *uses* Pokémon as tools. Palworld's loop is the opposite, the 'haha, what if Pokémon were slave labour' doesn't fit the Pokémon world. to me, the real time battles were the worst part of Arceus, especially the post game djinn hunts. real time interaction and catching was cool, the Dex tasks were cool, but the rest felt.. iffy at best. not to mention Pokémon is one of the few complex consistantly good turn based gameplay loops we have I don't want that taken away. I'd love to see pokemon diversify more, I'd love to see a return to the golden era of spin-offs, but I don't want the mainline games to be forced to become a whole new beast to satisfy old fans that have gotten bored. lastly, small nitpick, but "gotta catch 'em all" was a western tagline, it *wasn't* always part of it.

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      This is a *really* good response, thank you! I can't say I agree with many of your points but I can definitely see why you feel that way, and you do make a compelling argument. On the subject of Arceus -- You're right, not every new system worked, and it is hard to imagine a world where every system works well, even for spinoffs. On the other hand, I do think the mainline games would benefit a lot from some of those systems, even if not all of them. But yeah a new golden age of spin-offs would totally also reinvigorate the franchise (for me at least) without taking away from the mainline games, that's kind of half the point of the video (I'm also not a fan of the 'haha pokemon but slave labor' rhetoric of Palworld, I find it kind of tasteless. But the gameplay mechanic of a colony/management sim I think makes for an interesting element in a creature collector)

    • @mithy7525

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      @@mithy7525 it's weird, I tend to think of legends as mainline in the same vein as other remakes, but I tend to think of Let's Go as a spinoff. I don't have any good reason or justification for this, just how it registers in my brain lol

    • @mithy7525

      @azure6912 7 місяців тому

      @Cosmosis I cannot stress enough how refreshing it is to have a mature discussion about this that doesn't end up devolving into bickering. Personally, I hope legends Z-A goes well and that maybe the next battle trick in gen 10 plays around the exploration/collection themes the arceus put forth. I liked being rewarded for finding a new species, even though s/v was the first time I felt inclined to 100% the dex. It'd be cool to have a pokemon ranger SoA approach to the next trick, where finding hidden interactions or learning more about your pokemon granted a deeper use of the new mechanic. S/V definitely did better than previous titles, giving rewards for dex milestones but none of those were essential, overly powerful or exclusive to the task of collecting. I'd love if they could find a much happier balance in their development cycles, (I'm actually kinda glad we're not getting a new game this year, it's hard to produce anything of quality on a yearly turnaround) personally, I'd much rather mainline games be focused on the appeal of new designs and regions to explore and let the spin offs explore all the cool things that can happen in pokemon. The theorising around Z-A alone is a goldmine on that front. Imagining a pokemon city builder, or an ocarina of time esque adventure through eras is certainly exciting (and not entirely foreign of you've played PMD: explorers) Speaking as strictly a player and not a content creator, scarlet and violet, performance issues aside, are the most fun I've had playing a mainline game, ever. The story isn't complex but it's cute enough, and honestly getting 4 people into a union circle and running around wildly has been a blast, especially with BBQs.

      @@Cosmosis It's the same thing all Japanese companies did since the 80s and continued to do so until their decline in first HD console era. They always built a new engine with every new game. The problem is that Japan's culture is terrible for creating skilled programmers. So they lagged behind for over a decade until FFXIV Realm Reborn. Didn't see this go up! I'm so excited for a new Legends title. Arceus is the best Pokémon game in years. They experimented hard ore for the first time in a while. I think S/V could have been an iteration but even ignoring performance, the basics are so boring. This idea that we can't change pokemon combat because of the kids feels silly.

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Oh yeah I'm really hoping they do some cool stuff with ZA. I was hoping so bad they'd carry over stuff from Arceus into S/V, but you're definitely right, the basics aren't quite up to where they should be. My personal theory about combat is they don't want to change the fundamentals because the hardcore audience, with the competitive scene, might be upset about it. As far as I'm aware, their real reason for removing the national dex was the same, to make the games easier to balance for competitive. That scene is cool and all, but I only have interest in the casual side and I would loooove to see the casual stuff get some more focus too

    First of all, how did that got recommended to me UA-cam!? Second, the amount of cope in this video made me cringe. GameFreak is AAA studio, it's owned by Nintedo, has rights to most profitable franchise on this planet, each game - whether it's crap or not - sells in millions of copies. They like to have this image of being small studio, because that let's them pump those yearly releases of crappy, underperforming games that fans will buy each and every time and when finally after Scarlet and Violet they got roasted for their laziness, I get to see video like yours... Small studio? Lack of talent or training? Issues with the technology? Experiment with gameplay? Are you high? They are OWNED by company that released damn console, they have literally backdoor to any engineer that worked on putting Switch into the product you have in your home, hardware and firmware wise. Issue with Pokemon games is always the same, there is no reward structure. If game blows they get millions in profit, if the game is awsome they get millions in profit, so mangement saw that and decided each and every time since Platinum version came out, to slash content, add some of the cut content to DLC, churn out badly designed, unoptimized, ugly and lazy game and rake in the money. People who buy those games are the problem. you are like FIFA fans, you get rekt in your arse and you just ask for more next year. Wake up!

    A really good video, as always! I'm one of the "It holds my hand too often" guys. I know that, at this point in age, I would not be patiente enough to replay some old pokemon games cuz they didn't aged 100% well, but I still rather play something like that instead of the new ones. If you make an open world game, you have to properly make it to show the player that it's a living world... and they didn't delivered with the last ones. Maybe now with he DLC? But, at this point... how much are you wiling to spend to make a bland base game a proper enjoyable one? I never played the Arceus one. A friend let me borrow his copy, but I didn't find the time to play it, but... looks like that one is my kind of game. Keep it up, you're doing an amazing job Cos!

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I'm with ya on all this. I do think if you go back far enough they stop being as hand holdy. I've replayed a bunch of the older games over the past couple years and they hold up better than some of the more recent ones

    As someone who has played Pokemon since it's release in the west all the way up to the newest games I really really hope Legends Z-A takes all the good stuff from Arceus and improves upon what was lacking, and also as someone who played a lot of JRPG's as a kid like FF7 and Legend of the Dragoon you can absolutely have a mature story in a game and still have it appeal to kids, most kids aren't stupid and will more likely then not pick up what you're putting down.

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Really high hopes for Z-A here too! I'm glad they announced what they did today. Thank goodness Legends hasn't been abandoned. I just wish they carried over some of the mechanics from those to the other mainline games! Super good ideas on show there

  • @MatthewSmart
    @MatthewSmart 7 місяців тому

    I think a lot of these reasons pinpoint why I can't get into Pokémon anymore. I played each of the mainline games up until Sun and Moon, but very rarely saw myself to the end of them. Admittedly, part of that might be on me due to a lack of patience or interest or whatever, but I could tell with each iteration, it wasn't going to get better for me. You mention how Pokémon should mature with its audience, and I had that mindset too way back when. But there's a key note you're missing there. Generations. Each one introduces a new era of kids to the franchise, and they're having their minds blown by what's given to them and don't tend to care as much about the bigger picture conpared to us. And as long as the games are appealing to them and selling millions, the Pokémon company feels no reason to change up their strategy, unless they manage to release a game so broken and unacceptable that even they notice, which given the yearly release strategy, wouldn't surprise me. I just don't think I'm the target demographic at this point which may lead you to believe that I just can't get into Nintendo games with whimsical worlds anymore, but no. I really dig the Super Mario RPG remake, because it was simple but did a ton of unique things to make it stand out amongst the Mario lineage with its characters, story, and gameplay. This post was probably very rambly, but that's just how I feel about all of this.

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, the "growing with their audience" didn't necessarily mean making things for grown-ups. I just think kids have a lot more maturity and ingenuity than most people give them credit for. They're capable of understanding and loving more grown up stories, and in my experience, they like them a lot more most of the time. It feels like they started out making a game for elementary-junior high kids and now they're making them for pre-schoolers. Growing sometimes just means keeping up with the times etc etc. It's a nuanced opinion that's hard to state without bloating the video or this comment lmao Thanks so much for the response, definitely gets me thinking

    • @Cosmosis

      Honestly really happy about it. I think the first Legends was a big step that the franchise needed, and it's refreshing to see them go back and follow that thread some more. I'm hoping to see them use the opportunity to experiment some more and hopefully really nail down the technical side of the games too Although I do wish it took place in Unova instead of Kalos haha, Black and White are my favourite set of games and it looks like they might be skipping those ones for remakes! Even if Legends is only really a pseudo-remake

    I don't find "comfy" games that good, I mean, I feel much more immersed in a world where I would want to avoid conflict where I can and only fight when I can make money out of it, like Outward, a game with no levels or xp, just gear and money. Seeing enemies up ahead on the road, makes you want to find another way or somehow avoid fighting needlessly (As you would in real life) Now.. this game specifically is nothing too special, the graphics are basic and the voice acting is terrible, but the concept of this game is what makes a game feel alive and immersive and that you're not some special hero but just another part of the world like everyone else.

    • @Cosmosis
      @Cosmosis 8 місяців тому

      Yeah immersion doesn't always mean comfort and comfort doesn't always mean immersion! That does seem pretty immersive though. It's such a broad topic but it really does boil down to whatever gets you invested haha

    Good video but missing once important aspect. One handed gamers tend to want to play a specific game or at least genre which interests them rarely will a COD soldier sit down and think "yeah I want to game, I'll put on Mario kart 8 or pokemon go" If someone's can make a controller to get one hand control both triggers and sticks without repositioning then there's a market for it for sure. I'm trying to make myself a one handed sim racing joy pad but I'm no engineer.
