This is a long story, but the short version is the environment and culture! I visited BU before applying and it was one of the only schools I visited where everyone was smiling and seemed to actually like each other. There was no tense undercurrent of competition. That was really important to me. And my experience confirmed that observation. As much as one can love law school, I loved BU. Not every school will be the right fit for every person. I think it’s important to figure out what you want in a school and find a place that has those things.

The way my law school worked is you only had required classes during your first year; you had basically unlimited freedom to choose your classes for the remaining two years. I took mostly experiential courses and clinic with one traditional lecture class every semester.

Unfortunately the copies your law library will make available generally don’t have an access code you can use for the online materials that would be available if you bought your book new. However, most publishers will have the online materials available to purchase for a way lower cost than buying the book new. I did this in one of my classes and I think the cost for the online materials was $70. The cost to buy the book new (w/ access code) was $290. Hope this helps!

I think it means many things in different contexts, but in law school, it generally means going out of your way to meet new people in your chosen profession and personally connect with them. Law schools tend to host dedicated “networking events” where the entire goal of attending is to meet new people, make a few connections, and hopefully leave with some names and business cards of people you’d like to keep in touch with. Building my network in law school has been incredibly valuable for me personally!

My law school library has them all over the library for free student use! I’m sure your library would also provide access to a book scanner if you ask your library staff 🤗

Hi there! It varies by school. At BU you do one semester of each. At other schools, you may do two semesters of a certain subject. Most schools post their 1L curriculum on their website so, if you have a particular school in mind, you can see how they structure their first year courses.

There are MANY law students who are also parents and are balancing parenting and law school extremely well! I have a few classmates who gave birth during our first year of law school (and have done well academically). It’s not easy, but it is absolutely possible. So long as you have great time management and people in your life who can help out when you’re particularly busy, like during exam time, you’ll be in a great spot. Try to remember to give yourself grace through the process when you’re feeling overwhelmed. You got this. Congratulations on your little one and good luck on your law school journey!!

This is so true! Most people you go to school with have never been to law school before and are similarly just trying to figure it out as they go. Finding good mentors and a network of support is so helpful!
