That was very special, striking so many chords. Born in the 50’s, on Hartlepool’s Central Estate, which, like the entire town, was already in decline, I grew up surrounded by powerful imagery; it was on my doorstep, as the derelict rope works at the top of Rokeby Street was my playground. When I wasn’t raking about I was drawing. A father and brother who went into shipbuilding at CMEW and Richardson & Westgarth, I went on to become a teacher studying art and, for a while, painted and drew industrial landscapes. Still in the town and up to my neck in muck and dust, most days. It shapes you, doesn’t it. My best pal went to see the exhibition, yesterday, and said it was wonderful - I’ll be visiting, soon. I really like this museum but I think the exhibits need updating, they’ve been the same since 1999 and it shows in one of the displays upstairs going through the ages, it only goes up to 1999, they need a section for 2024.

Was working the city of culture bid back I'm 2015 looking after the backstage area, bugged me for 7 years what this song was, finally.

I haven't been to this museum in over a decade. I'm not sure if it's that planty bit in this video, but I remember there was a display with a jungle setup and models of Eryops and Meganeura, a prehistoric amphibian and dragonfly respectively, and you could touch buttons to light up different key points of the display. Is that still there?

I loved this to bits. Thank you so much to Arts Centre Washington and Sunderland Culture for sharing it with the internet at large. It feels like very local work, and very intimate and specific to these talented and committed young people, but that specificity made it resonate a lot for this stranger in another country.
