Planning your own safari - Things I wish I knew before
Our 2024 video series to the Kruger has come to an end but please check out all our videos on our channel for where we stayed and roads we visited.
While this wasn't our first trip to the Kruger National Park, it was Tom's parents.
Throughout the trip they would say "wow, I didn't realise you could do that" or "I can't believe this is here".
Tom sat down with his parents to discuss a few things they wish they had known before and top tips for someone who is maybe interested in planning a trip but a little unsure where to get started.
Please put any other questions you may have in the comments below and we hope you enjoyed the series :)

Hi there! We are Tom and Emma. In July 2023 we travelled to South Africa for 3 weeks to embark on a self drive safari in the north of the country and a trip through the Drakensburg Mountains into the south. This is the sixth episode, in which after a long time in the bush we arrived at civilisation in Grasp. We explore some of the less known things to do just outside the big national parks and ...

Hi there! We are Tom and Emma. In July 2023 we travelled to South Africa for 3 weeks to embark on a self drive safari in the north and a trip through the Drakensburg Mountains into the south. This is the first episode, and our first camp in Marakele National Park, this really is a bucket list place for lovers of landscape. We hope you enjoy!
Loved this video, it came up when I searched on Oliphants Rest Camp to show our friends where we'll all be staying next year and low and behold your walkthrough was the very same cottage we got in 2021 and are hoping to get on our next trip....best view in the park! Thanks for posting!
How awesume was those couple of days! I'm so jealous - can't imagine it getting better lion-wise. You were so lucky. Hope you come back to our beautiful country
great video. Can I ask the unit number please? looking to book something with a view like that. previously stayed at Moping and had one of the bungalows overlooking Pioneer dam. this looks just as stunning though.
Thank you! We stayed at the family unit at Olifants which I believe is number 14. That one slept 4 but we previously stayed in number 10 (you can check that one out in our previous video on our channel) which is what made me fall in love with this camp. - Emma
depending on the length of your stay and/or your whole trip in SA you should consider to buy a Wild Card which allows you unlimited access at no further fees to any SA Park for 1 year. One has to point out that you easyly can/have to pay 10x as much for the priv. Game Reserves (Nottens) than for the public Camps in Kruger. There are a few with less but also a lot of priv. accommodation with even higher rates. Also the further north you travel in the park - let `s say north of Satara Camp - the less trafic will be,but also the sightings getting rarer except for birds particularlly during migration ( Nov.- March) One last point : i would recommend to bring cash at least for 1 car fill, because it happens that the fuel stations in the park are "offline" which means you can not pay by credit card and the only ATM as far as i know wich takes internat. Credit Cards is in Skukuza
Some super top tips there 🤩 The times we have been we have always purchased the Wild Card as we have done 2 and 3 week trips. Definitely saved us some money! - Emma
So. I have to say. I am captivated by your British accent but even with that, you pronounce all the camps soooooooo well. Too well to be honest. I am new to your channel but I am loving it
Haha thank you so much!☺️ it does help Tom grew up in The Netherlands so we have a little help from his Dutch. - Emma
The beauty of Africa...Awesome video
It is a wonderful place! - Emma
Just a note - your dad mentioned that professional safari guides can drive off-road - that is NOT the case in Kruger itself. They are able to go off-road in the adjacent concessions and private reserves but do not book an overlander safari guide in Kruger and expect them to go right up to the animals - they have to stick to roads like anyone else.
Yes, I believe he meant in the private reserves the guides can go off road for certain citings (the big 5). But yes in the Kruger itself they cannot go off road. Not one to get mixed up that’s for sure! The main difference we got in the Kruger with the ‘professional guides’ was the night drive and them being able to go on slightly different roads that the public but again they were still roads. Good thing to point out! - Emma
Amazing video, Thank You. Do you have any recommendations of some of the loops you did?
Hiya 😊 around Olifants we enjoyed heading out of camp along the H8 then south down the H1-5 to the S147 one way road, S92 all the way back up to Olifants. The other one we enjoy is up the S44 to Olifants lookout then north along the S93/S46 to Letaba for breakfast/brunch At Lower Sabie you can’t really go wrong. We have had a lot of success heading done the H4-2 to the H5 turning then driving down 5/6km or heading North from Lower Sabie along the S30 Hope that helps 😊 - Tom and Emma
Thank you for your info on your video. I’m visiting Kruger for the 40th time since I was a child but have not been there since 2014. Bringing a pal with me from UK and booked self contained accommodation but obviously will have to buy braai grid and rings etc from the shop as we can’t pack those things in our bags. So looking forward to it for 9 glorious nights. I do believe a person with a Monzo de it card can just swipe and pay and it converts the £ into SA Rands so if I am correct that will save brining cash
Hi Tessa, awwh wow bringing your friend is amazing and I’m sure you’ll have a great time! You’ll be amazed at what they have now in the camp rest camps accommodation, you may not need all the extra bits 🤷🏼♀️ You’re right monzo, Revolut both work by contactless payments at the cash register in the rest camps and thankfully no issues with load shedding. Some cash is helpful just in case but we certainly wouldn’t take a lot. Hope that helps 😊 - Tom and Emma
The Ki-Swahili word "Safari" simply means "Travel" white people made the association with game viewing...
That’s an interesting fact thank you for sharing 😊
@@RoamingRopers I was working in Tanzania and I wanted to make an appointment to meet with the governor of the Kagera region. His secretary answered the phone and politely informed me that the governor would not be available for 2 weeks as he was on safari....In New York....🤣😅😂
Another great video thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! - Emma
you guys really do a great job capturing how playful the animals actually are.
Thank you :) Just patience when sitting with the natural world often leads to great moments - Tom
Your new nottens video popped up on my feed, binged all your vids now😂 lekker to see you coming back and enjoying the bush like locals🎉❤ Hope you've got plans to tour the West coast and northern cape during flower season some time
Wow! im glad you found our videos and most importantly, you enjoyed them! We are in love with Africa and advocate people travel there as much as we can. We will be back for sure so if you have any recommendations for the Northern Cape we'd love to hear them? :) - Tom
That was great. Our 6th trip to SA next March. 2 weeks in the south of the Kruger and 6 weeks in Greater Kruger. First time staying at Sabie and Berg-en-dal rest camps.
Thank you. We had a fabulous time. We are very jealous of your upcoming 6th trip! Hope you have the best time. We definitely want to look at staying at Berg-en-dal in the future so let us know how that goes! - Emma
This is Brilliant! Thank You!
You're very welcome! We are so glad you liked it :) - Tom
So beautiful content! 🥹 So glad I found your channel! May I ask what camera gear you are using? 🤩
We are so glad to have you :) SO glad you're enjoying the content. We use the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 for the camp walk around videos and wide angles, then a Canon R6 for more close up videos with a 100-400mm lens - Tom
@@RoamingRopers thank you very much! Looking forward to seeing more, keep it up! 😁
First of all beautifull vid! What a amazing sightings. Can i ask you guys something? We are going to ZA and the kruger next year in October with 4 people. How do you guys manage to book 2 sanparks rondavels(bungalows) next to each other? Is this easy to do?
Hi Vincent, It is not too difficult to do but I would also say that it is not entirely possible to do. What I mean is that you can make a booking for 2 rondavels and then a few weeks out from your trip email the SAN parks Bookings team buuutttt I know that they also try to ensure that all rondavels under one booking are next to each other any ways. I have never had them place 2 rondavels under my one booking name apart. Hope that helps and so glad you liked the video :)
@@RoamingRopers thanq so much for the respons. I gonna check it out if it works like the way you say. But first i look at some more vids on your channel😁 keep on entertaining!
Great video! Do you have that bingo for me to print? Sounds like a fun idea😊
Thank you 😊 unfortunately we can’t send a PDF copy of the bingo cards but you can purchase it via safari bingo.co.za or you can purchase them in some of the rest camp shops when inside the Kruger.
Just joined the fam 😁 ❤ amazing keep it up ❤
🎉 yay thanks for joining
Welcome, welcome 🤗 thank you so much 🥰 - Emma
Nice video. Really enjoyed it. I’ve never been to South Africa or even out of the US. I follow a lot of UA-camrs who film the wildlife at several reserves. My favorite lion pride and male coalition live around Crocodile Bridge. You can see the males on the S25, S26, and S28. The lioness and cubs was incredible as well as the two huge males crossing the bridge. The lion road block must’ve been absolutely incredible. Looking forward to more of your videos. Have a great day 💜🦁
💯 fr
Awh Rachel! Thank you 😊 we really hope you can have the opportunity to get out to Africa at some point as it is sooo special. Lion road blocks are always so incredible ❤️ - Tom
Great choice of music to go with the bush
@@robvandeventer972 thanks Rob! We are glad you like it - Emma ☺️
Love it! What an amazing trip
@@sophieroper1695 we had the best time 🥰 - Emma ☺️
Congrats! Love these vids, really helping our planning for later this year. Can I please ask what time of year you did this trip? Thanks 👍
Thank you! Glad you’ve enjoyed the series. We went in July. Good weather and managed to book our trip around South African school holidays so it wasn’t too busy. 😁
Macadoo-dorp. Awesome! Nice trip! Congrats
Hahaha thanks for the correction. We were always going to struggle with some 🤣
Thanks for the video. Bird at 07:41 is Marico Sunbird. Bird at 08:18 is Purple Roller.
Thanks for the tips on the sun birds, they're so fast and can look very similar. Im pretty sure that the Rufous crowned roller is just another name for the Purple roller so its the same bird but I could be wrong.
Absolutely loving watching you guys , I am a huge bush lover and grew up in the Kruger
Aww Thank you, it is a truly special place that we just don't have over in the UK. We already have a trip for next year booked to come back.
Lovely wild dogs
We got so lucky! First time seeing them for Emma
Nice video. The Bushveld camps have hides. Visit them on your next trip to Kruger Park.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks for sharing your experience
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Thanks
Our pleasure!
So lucky to have seen so many Rhino including a beautiful baby, we saw none despite looking for 4 days in Kruger, they are sadly so rare due to poaching!
So sad in the Kruger hey! This is why Marakele National park blew us away. If you do love Rhino it is well worth a visit.
Very nice sadari because Sabi Sand is one of the best safari destinations in the world and it is also the best place to see big cats more than anywhere else, thank you guys
You are right, thank you :)
Most definitely a hidden gem of a park. We've been there 5 times in the last 18 months. Both camps are amazing and the staff are so friendly. Would 100% recommend
Amazing to hear from someone else who thinks the same as us! Really blew us away :)
Nice video. Your Black-bellied Bustard is a Red-crested Korhaan instead.
Thanks for the correction, we weren't 100% on that one so very feedback helps :)
Hi lovely video, what number rondavel were you staying at Olifants. And what do you press on your camera/phone at 19.43minutes to adjust the background light setting
Hiya, we were staying in rondavel 10 at Olifants but 10, 11 and 12 are all very similar with amazing views. We just tapped the screen on the back of the camera on the area we wanted it to focus on to get it to auto adjust the light. Make sure you have your camera on auto setting though to do this. Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Lovely view from your cabin x
It really was a stunning camp and incredibly scenic!
