The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company is a Twin Cities based theatre company dedicated to bringing the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, Britain’s foremost light opera collaborators, to life for modern audiences: from life-long Gilbert and Sullivan fans to those who are seeing their operettas for the first time.
The company’s primary annual offering is two fully staged productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas (one in the fall and one in the spring). The company challenges itself to present productions of the highest artistry, authenticity, and impressive production values. Productions are performed with a full orchestra and casts of over thirty members. Actors are drawn from an established group of performers with long-term commitments to the company, as well as new performers drawn from the Twin Cities theatre community and selected through open auditions.
Additional productions can be found on longtime company member Richard Rames' UA-cam account (@RichardRames).

the intro about the cellphones was delightful. i rather like this performance. only complaint is that changing the setting to a former colonial possession completely undoes half the point of utopia, limited. it was already an anticolonial piece of media, and i'd argue changing the setting to an america-esque former colonial possession undoes the point entirely.
This will not do! Sir Joseph lacks anything like a British Admiral's uniform and he makes silly off-script mispronunciations of Captain Corcoran's name. This repeats the classic mistake of trying to be funnier than W.S.Gilbert, last done miserably by the late Frankie Howard. The set lacks any semblance to a warship deck, the music is pre-recorded and without a stereo soundtrack, single voices are hard to locate among the chorus. For me the shining star is Josephine (Kaoru Shoji) who alone commands the stage with her solos "Sorry her lot who loves too well" and "The hours creep on apace".
Hi! Thank you for watching our production. While we are open and receptive to any criticism regarding our shows, I do want to clarify one piece of misinformation in your comment. Contrary to your belief, our music is not prerecorded. It is played live every night by a 30+ piece orchestra! The orchestra is located in the Stage Right wing of the theater (due to its small space). This is probably why it sounds slightly “off” in this recording.
@@gsvloc Thank you for correcting me about your orchestra. I see some 36 players credited on the video. I compliment them all on reproducing Sullivan's airs so harmoniously. How much more enjoyable the video would be if we could glimpse them at their work, or at least see their conductor Mr. Buikema who should be there to guide both orchestra and singers! I shall carp only about the lack of stereo soundtrack that perhaps it is not too late to correct.
I was in a production of The Sorcerer in college. Here, they (wisely) changed a some of the lyrics in one of the musical numbers. "Hate me, I drop my H's, 'have through life" became "hate me, I grind my teeth at night." "Hate me, I roll down One Tree Hill" became "hate me I like to sing karaoke."
what a disappointing ending...
Wish the orchestra didn’t sound like they are playing in dressing room backstage
I find the Pirates all wearing kilts (Well, nearly all) quite questionable, but I really appreciate the Lifesaver bit, both as a clever visual gag, and reference to HMS Pinafore.
I really enjoyed that, thanks for subtitles as I don't always catch the words aright ♪ ♪ through being hard of hearing.
Thank you! And clever wordplay ;)
I confess to amazement when an american theater take on a Gilbert & Sullivan opera and get it all as right as this troupe do who clearly take the piece seriously. Outstanding songs to stay for are: "Poor Wandering One" and "Oh Leave Me not to Pine".
I haven't seen G&S on British television for decades, thank goodness for UA-cam.
Nice production. Very good voices and a novel staging approach. My only quibble is that Alexis' and other officer's uniforms were missing belts, which tend to make them look like sloppy bouses or tunics. Still a fine production.
What.... people didn't wear sloppy blouses or tunics in Gilbert and Sullivan's time? Lol
@@mjacobsable Not if they were military, and the dramatis personae lists Alexis "of the Grenadier Guard", who even when on leave without their busby for an engagement party, would never appear anything less than "spit and polish". His whole character is rather fanatical and unbending. He could have just as easily been put into a morning suite or Ascot race dress to convey his upper class level, but to be in "military undress" is not to mean "undressed"...
And while these are Life Guardsmen, their base uniform is identical to Grenadier Guardsmen outfits, with belt and cross belt. ua-cam.com/video/3y8yyXL5fQc/v-deo.html
Somehow I am the first to comment. Quite good. Singing is outstanding. Kudos .

This was wonderful from start to finish! Great work everyone.
Very traditional and very well sung 👏👏👏
I only recently became interested in seeing the operettas, and Yeomen least of all, because I was not interested in a tragedy. This version of the story is by far the best I've found available, in terms of its characters and the more humorous presentation of the story. Elsie and Phoebe were perfect, and I liked Wilfred, a very charismatic jailer. While not everyone gets the happy ending that Fairfax and Elsie get, I can believe that there is hope for them. I hope all the actors went on to their own versions of success, whatever they were. I could only wish that the actual video quality was better, and all the voices captured equally. If there is a cleaner version of this production available tell me where it is. Many thanks for posting this.
Thank you for your kind words! Unfortunately, this is the only recorded version of our production. Nevertheless, we thank you for your enthusiasm towards our company and our production!
@@gsvloc ah me, ah me. I don't see much online for the actors, I hope they are all doing well. I particularly enjoyed the relatively happy ending to a show I usually see billed as a tragedy.
