We were in Lyon a couple summers ago and LOVED it - we didn't speak a lick of French other than the usual 'bonjour/merci beaucoup/je suis désolé' etc but I think what helps is that we tried to make an effort and the locals could see that and instead of entertaining our broken and terribly pronounced French they just responded to us in English haha. Perhaps it also helped that we made it known we weren't British or Americans (je suis néo-zélandais) and not overly loud.

Shoot! I literally just found your channel and was planning to sign up for your wine tasting this fall on my grand tour of France trip. However, i get it! I’ve never been able to decide what i wanted to “be” and I’m 64. Only thing i know for sure is that I’ll be retiring to france in less than 3 years and then I can do whatever catches my fancy. Look forward to hearing what’s next for you. I really enjoyed your Lyon tips vlogs.

I lived in Lyon for a summer, and I loved it! However, I lived with a family, and I had taken several years of French prior to my study abroad program. My French family did not speak any English, and I was homesick for the first couple of weeks as I adjusted, but I grew to love it. I wish I would have had the money to experience more of the restaurants as a college student, but hope to return in the next couple of years. My French needs quite a bit of brushing up, however.
