Colour or Black And White Street Photos / Street Photography / Fujifilm X70
This is a slideshow of Colour and Black & White photos. Each photo is shown in colour and black and white. I usually shoot in Black & White but thought I'd shoot in Colour for a change. Some say that colour is distracting when it comes to street photography as it takes the attention or focus away from the subject. Let me know what you think....

I suppose it depends on the context and what the pictures are being used for. I've always found it interesting how the focus and light shifts from one to the other.
Yes, I concur, the focus does shift..... It was interesting to see how differently I had to edit them in order to evoke the same feeling....
Which do you prefer? Which do you think suits street photography better? Why? Let me know....
Are you shooting all these from the hip? Very effective in capturing the candid. Cheers and adventure on!
Yes, I mostly shoot from the hip or chest high usually using the flip screen on the camera so I can still frame the shot. Some shots were taken without looking though, the low angle shots with the camera held in my hand by my side below the waist.
Cool captures still loving my little X70...... using the 100V too these days but great to use the 70 when wanting to go light and 'extra stealth mode' 😅👌
Hey Phillip, thank you. Yes, I agree, I have a X100f but carry the X70 all the time for the weight and also the flip screen which has single-handedly enabled me to capture the photos in the slideshow. It's essential to me...
The Urban Chic of KL. Looking at your photos... in some ways some things haven't changed. There's a comfort to that.
I like this series so far. Some stunning shots here.
Hey! Great! Thanks a lot man!
Great Stuff. Love Hanoi.
Hey @FlashesOfTime, thanks a lot.
Nice work..... one camera in my arsenal I'll never sell ❤
Hey Phillip, thanks a lot. Yes, this camera got me back into photography. I use to shoot slide and didn't like the images I was getting with digits until this I got this camera. There's something magical about the images...
❤ love the schoolkids holding on to each other's tails!
Haha...ya!
Hey there! Great shots. I just recently acquired an X70 and I love it. Have you ever tried it with the TCL-X100? Just curious.
Hey @michaeldavedizon6695, thank you very much. No I haven't tried it with the TCL-X100. Have you? How did you find it? Cheers!
@@kienlimx Ah okay! I was hoping you did, just to get some intel whether it would work or not. I will experiment and let you know ;)
Cool! Look forward to your feedback.@@michaeldavedizon
I was hoping you'd get the dead fish. yeah, getting as much in-camera with minimal editing is the way to go. Cheers and adventure on!
Hahaha... ya, macabre, but compelling.... Ya, I just "cheat" these days and try to get where I want in editing as fast as I can....
Like these "off the beaten tracks". I just about remember the wooden house by the beach... especially the king crabs! xx
Hey sis! Thanks! Yes, I just about remember the wooden house too. And especially the stormy sea with the fishing boats. Was sometime in the evening coz was dark. This is possibly the place too where I first heard "Wooden Heart" by Elvis... xxx
@@kienlimx bro! Yes! "Wooden Heart".... I remember you loving that song! 💖

Thanks, for the update.😊
Watches have been good for what 700 years no worries mate.😊
I would like to see the "only" color option, I've seen where only one color shows ,and all the rest is B/W. Thanks it's beautiful.
The one that got away... Thanks very much. Might very well do a color episode. Thanks for the suggestion...
Very nice images, thanks.
Hey! Thanks a lot!
Loving these Penang shots.... all that reclaimed land, wow... whereabouts in Penang is it, I'm curious. Can't believe that used to be where the sea started, no trace of it now. And those two tall buildings... very cool, thank you.
Hey sis, xxx, thanks a lot. It's in Gurney Drive, across the open-air food court! Yes, where we used to walk to from Gottlieb Garden.....
That was pretty good. It reminds me that good image potential exists anywhere. You just gotta get out and start snapping!
Thank you very much! Yes, it forces me to shoot and make the best of every situation.... give it at go, set your alarm for 5 minutes... Let me know how it went :)
“Arty Farty” 😂 something I would have said!! 🤣
Hehehehe...
Cool! Lately, this travel vlogger couple hiked down Penang Hill and walked through some ruins that looked really interesting. But then again, I've always had a wont for those kinda places. here is thgeir video. ua-cam.com/video/k88fQ_7ExPE/v-deo.html
nice to see the old jettys.
Yes, it is.... next episode is Chew jetty :)
Another great POV!
Hey @hugomartinsphoto, thank you very much!

Good hobby😊 nice shots of the sea, lake?
Thanks a lot, Dorothy. It's Truc Bach Lake
Happy New Year. Good to see you back taking photos again. Will you switch to using in built x70 B&W jpegs? (to cut down on your post processing)
I still shoot RAW but use Capture One's curves options to cut down time editing.... Most of the photos in this episode was with the "Film High Contrast" curve as a base.... I did shoot jpegs and raw as an experiment but still liked the latitude I had with raw and to shoot both all the time meant more time looking at both and took up more storage space.... Happy New Year! Good to hear from you again!
❤
Thank you , sis xxx
The X70 is amazing. I switched to more compact cameras (Sony A7 series user) like the GRIII and I was lucky enough to get one of these and I’m soooo happy with It. Great colors and tbh the autofocus doesn’t bother me since I’m also used to film cameras and even though I appreciate the technology, it’s not a problem personally. Great photos and video, and I’m happy that you are making content about this hidden gem.
Hey @marioreyes, thank you very much. Yes, I concur, the X70 with all its idiosyncrasies is still a camera I have with me most of the time. I've learnt to work with it, it is light, compact, and I love the images that come out from it. Glad you were able to find one. They are thin on the ground! Happy shooting!
Nice collection of photos and great music! 🤙🏼
Hey, thank you very much :)
I espeically love that first shot acorss the water... and the last one in the 10 secs you had left x
Thanks a lot sis xxx
So true about putting time limits on and wanting to snap a photo of everything - I’ve definitely felt that before…
True! Pressure is on and makes me realise what kind of preparation/practise I can do beforehand. I don't recce the area before shooting but I can certainly train myself to see from different perspectives which is what I realise I would like to do to get variations in shots....
Great challenge, but I have to admit that I was worried you were going to get run over by a scooter! 😂 The X70 is a great little camera. 🤙🏼
Hey! Thanks a lot! Haha... yes, I have to be vigilant... funnily enough, although it's super busy in Hanoi, the drivers are wary and tolerant and expect anything... as I have to when I drive....
Nice shot today. Cheers!
Thanks matey!
I love the photographs taken with the Fujifilm X70! I can't find one cheap enough for me to buy here in the states. 😩 Could you possibly help me out?
Hey TC, I haven't seen any for sale here in Hanoi.... I bought mine in Malaysia and seems there are some for sale there...
I'm tryin to find an X70 that I can afford! Can you help me out? I'm also a musician, loved your original piece here! 💜
Hey TC, thanks very much. I bought mine in Malaysia... secondhand from a shop....
What a brilliant eye you have for photographing
Thanks sis xxx

You know I have a love for alleyways... and this one is pretty supreme. Also, you got some really nice shots in this one. Cheers!
Hey! Thanks, dude! I'll do some more alleyway challenges for you! There are more than loads here in Hanoi and all have a story...!
Hi! Which do you think would be a better choice between the x70 and x100t? (same sensor, one has evf the other a tilt screen). Thanks!
I don't have the X100t but the X100f. I love them both. The sensor on the X70 is amazing so I'm assuming the 100f's images will look great too! I don't use the tilt screen very much and I love the X100f's EVF. In bright sunlight the X70's viewfinder is not bright enough for me to see properly and a drawback as I have to almost shoot blindly. With the X100f I just put my eye to the EVF. I love both the 18.5mm and 23mm lens perspectives and they are different but I can shoot with either happily... I can't say which camera is the better choice as they are both different and great in their own way.... After having said that, I take the X70 out more often because of size and weight :) Hope what I shared helps.... All the best!
Hello, I just want to know what kind of thumb grip you use?
Hello, I thought it was a JJC but after researching I think it might be this one.... www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Camera-Hot-Shoe-Thumb-Grip/dp/B096TRY19Z?th=1 I must add that when I use it it interferes with the flip-up screen and stops it from flipping up! But I don't use the flip up screen much so I'm ok with it on... :)
@@kienlimx thanks!!
@@chaiwatriratanaphong755 Welcome!
Hello, I really enjoy your shoots. You mentioned that you were shooting in a Velvia. What is your process for converting the photos to B&W?
Hi Ari Sultanik, thank you very much :) Yes, the film simulation I use is Velvia. I import the raw files into Capture One and convert it into black and white. Then edit further from there....
@@kienlimx Thanks.
@@arisultanik Welcome :)
Aye, the land of our birth truley is a paradise. Cheers, Brother!
Yes, for sure. I am home and at peace...
I was 7 years old the first time I went to Langkawi. I remember there was a village that you could find burnt rice on the ground... in the sand... that was related to some local myth. Forgot the story of the myth... but I vaguely remember it involved a princess and fire.
Nice one! I was quite a bit older when I first went to Langkawi. There were zinc roofed stalls at the jetty. I stayed in a place called "The Last Resort" because it was the last "resort" in that stretch of "resorts" which were really charming wooden chalets.... I rented a motorbike for RM10 a day and rode all around Langkawi...
Very nice. Looks like a fantastic location. The blue skies with the clouds just after rain, makes great combination.
nice.
Thank you matey!
Phone in the pocket comment cracked me up haha (inside joke). But seriously looks like you handle the camera much easier which I assume helps you with framing and gets you more photos for your challenge?
Haha... I guess it does make sense that it makes it more manoeuvrable....
... and the damn sand gets into everything! hahaha!
Certainly does...!
:)
that's a really nice room setup. love the traditional kampung vibe.😃
Yes, it's a real Kampung house. It's has a lovely compound too... I stayed in 2 others there as well that had outdoor baths.... :)
One good thing about putting the phone away is that you can just have fun and enjoy taking photos and not worry about how much time you have left. You waste precious seconds always checking it haha. The alarm will let you know time is up! Anyways great video as always. For you next challenge you should try doing a selfie shot with you x70. I’m interested to see how you wear your GoPro in your pocket (ie do you have it on a tripod or something).
... knowing the time adds to the drama... hahaha... ya, the alarm does do it's job... Ok, next time will do a selfie... how rad!!! Cheers mate!
Holding your phone and camera at the same time had me worried you might drop it hehe. Good video as always!
Haha... the idea was to keep the phone close to hand so that I could check the time and I got used to holding it.... but ya, next vid I'll remember to tuck it in my pocket! Cheers!
Cool part of town. Yeah, I shoot more with feel than thought as well.
Yes, this is in Tu Hoa, sort of a peninsula in West Lake.... Ya, thinking muddles the moment...! Hehehe...!
Additionally, since you love shooting black and white. Have you thought about infrared? The Fuji X100F is a good candidate for converting to infrared (lens doesn’t suffer from hotspots). It’s what I ended up doing with mine. You can look at some of the short videos on my channel or check out Flickr for B&W infrared photos.
Interesting... :)
Hi Kienlimx, thanks for the shoutout! Good to see the X100f. Makes me miss mine! More so the EVF. Especially today as I was at the beach shooting with an old Sony Nex-5 and 16mm F2.8 lens (my poor mans Fuji X70, cost me $100usd for camera and lens whereas the Fuji x70 goes for $600usd used) and it was so hard to nail focus due to not being able to view the LCD in the bright light ( I was shooting up close and due to this I couldn’t use zone focusing). I love the building (hotel?) around the two minute mark and the reflection of it in the water. For me I’d be tempted to use a wider lens (maybe a 12mm) to get the blue sky, building and reflection from the water in the shot! But yeah definitely a colour photo that one. Your black and white one is awesome though! Thanks for taking the time to use the Fuji X100f and sharing your thoughts comparing it to the X70. Love your 5 minute challenges. Now that I have a GoPro Hero 7 I might do something similar. But probably a bit more of a challenge as I’m more in the country side and not a lot of scenic views hehe.
Hey, you are most welcome! Yes, with the X70 I'm am sometimes shooting blind! I didn't use to use the viewfinder on the X100f but now love it! Yes, makes it all a lot easier when one can see what one is shooting :) Yes, 12mm sounds interesting. I haven't used anything as wide yet. Widest so far is 24mm full frame for my Nikon... and I haven't used it enough to get a feel for it... but you've inspired me to use it more now.. hahaha... thanks! Thanks very much! It really is a challenge even in the city.. Would love to see yours :)
What do you use to record yourself while doing these challenges? Is it a GoPro? How is it attached? Chest harness? Like the black and white look from the X70. I think it was me who asked for the comparison between the x100 and the x70! (having owned an x100s and x100f in the past and looking to grab a x70 in the future for the 18mm lens and the smaller pocketability of the camera. Thanks again!
Hello Kiwi In Kyushu, yes, I use a GoPro 7 to record myself and I stick it in my shirt...!!! hahaha..! Ok, yes, I will make the comparisons video and inform you when it's up. Thanks very much :)
