11 Determination of Thermal conductivity of Insulating powder
The insulating powder, whose thermal conductivity is to be determined, is fitted in the gap between the two spheres. The heat generated by the heater flows through the powder to the outer sphere. The outer sphere loses heat to atmosphere.

The apparatus is designed to determine the Stefan Boltzmann constant. The apparatus consists of a hemisphere fixed to a Bakelite plate, the outer surface of which forms the jacket to heat it. Hot water to heat the hemisphere is obtained form a hot water tank, which is fixed above the hemisphere.

In counter-flow heat exchangers the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite ends. The counter current design is the most efficient, in that it can transfer the most heat from the heat (transfer) medium per unit mass due to the fact that the average temperature difference along any unit length is higher.

Heat is transferred from the warm fluid through the wall of the inner tube (the so-called heating surface) to the cold fluid. A heat exchanger can also be operated in counterflow, in which the two fluids flow in parallel but opposite directions.This flow arrangement is called parallel flow.

The guarded hot plate apparatus uses a steady-state method in order to determine the thermal conductivity of an insulating material. Use of a steady-state method requires that the insulating material be in equilibrium with its surroundings in order for accurate thermal conductivity measurements to be obtained.
