Spectral Evolver is the UA-cam channel of Will Klingenmeier. An omnivore of sound, lover of monophonic plainchants, noise, and the dérive, Will Klingenmeier has spent the last fifteen years living as a borderline hermit developing a distinct palate. With an insatiable thirst for sound, spontaneity, and adventure, this channel, while drawing on a broad-spectrum of happenings, will always strive to find the common thread of sound.
DFAM, Trogotronic m277, and Mid Side Processing with WMD Geiger Counter & Dwarfcraft Synth Mangler
A DFAM patch stereoized with the @trogotronic m277 then synthesized into Mid Side (M/S) with the Shakmat SumDiff. The mid is processed with the @WMDevices Geiger Counter and the side is processed through the Dwarfcraft Devices Synth Mangler.

Отличный микрофон, хорошо читается в миксе, в ценовой категории 50-80 долларов, как он стоит у нас ему мало аналогов
Great work just got kyma setting it up this weekend
Welcome to the family! Feel free to ask questions as they arise on your journey.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
wow! didnt know this existed. complex stuff. now heres the question i´ve been trolling modular synth developers for years at superbooth: "can you make it sound happy, nice and beautiful too?" its so easy to come up with nerve rattling dystopian alien digital soundscapes... how bout lush cosy and relaxing ones?
Hey there! I get where you're coming from. Here's an album I made using Kyma (with live synthesis and input from other instruments) which might be closer to what you have described. Of course, it's all in the eye of the beholder. willklingenmeier.bandcamp.com/album/d-rive
We just published an interview with the inventors of Kyma which you will enjoy!!!
Thanks for letting me know. I will check it out!
Any change since recording? Has it seen more or less usefulness (ie, is it relevant)? At $250 it's not expensive to get into if it's a likely future recording solution, but I understand it's going to have more noise than a $1000 mic for quiet environments.
Hi there! I haven't used mine in a while, but I still feel the same way. It's a nice option for entry level binaural/ambisonics, it's intuitive to use, reasonable, and can be used as an interface, all of which make it a no-brainer for me. That said, there are certainly quieter, higher quality ambisonic set-ups. If you're more interested in high quality recording than those things, I would look at some of the other solutions from Rodes and Sennheiser. Keep in mind you will need 4-channels of matched mic-preamps to do first order ambisonics. I hope this helps!
Merci pour ce test complet :) Pour une prise de son voix j'hésite entre ce modèle ou le Oktava MD-382. Lequel serait le plus adapté selon vous ?
Hello! Thanks for watching. I haven't used the Oktava MD-382 so it's hard to say, but I believe it has a wider frequency response than the MD-66A. If you want more bandwidth, I would go for the MD-382. If you want a more lo-fi sound I would go for the MD-66A. I hope that helps!
@@SpectralEvolver Yes. I think I understood the general idea. Thanks ! And good continuation :)
is there any point to doing a spectrum analysis for longer files just for recreating that sound with sumofsines? or does loading in a larger chunk offer more resolution or accuracy for the resynthesis?
Actually, shorter recordings work better. The longer the file the harder it is (usually) to do a high quality analysis and re-synthesis. I don't recall the timing SSC "recommends" to keep files under, but I think it says in the spectrum analysis tool when you use it.
dang i need to start experimenting with this asap.. thanks for the great video
dude this is amazing.. so creative. never seen anything quite like this
im starting to study kyma. what are some use cases for doing something like this instead of using a square wave generating oscilator?
Hi there, well, the purpose of this video was to show how to synthesize a square wave using sine waves. It would certainly be more straightforward to just use a square wave oscillator. To answer your question (a little bit) though, having individual control over the constituent oscillators allows for more subtle control and unique opportunities for creative sound-particularly when re-synthesizing a sound.
@@SpectralEvolver that’s for the reply. Would you offer hourly private lessons by chance? I’m taking at class at asu I just started but trying to accelerate my progress.
@@demetrievdoxiadis2701 Oh, very cool. You might know Garth Paine? He's a friend of mine. Yes, I do offer lessons. Shoot me an email and we can discuss it further www.willklingenmeier.com/contact
Love the urchin and thank you guys for the video. Regarding the clipping, doesn't Kyma have dynamics processors? Compressing a few of those signal paths might help with the clipping/tone. Can you slap a brick wall limiter on the output? Although I already output my Kyma sounds directly into protools for further processing, I would LOVE it if Kyma had a module that you could run Vsts through, inserting anything your heart desires into the signal path. Would be especially useful for things like EQ/Compression.
Hi there! Yes, Kyma has many dynamics processors and of course you can make your own too. I haven't looked at this video since we made it, but certainly some eq/compression/gain staging would help. As for a brickwall limiter, it wouldn't solve the problem entirely because the sound is internally clipping before the final output. There isn't a Kyma sound (that I know of) where you can just plunk a VST into the audio path, but you can certainly route audio out of Kyma, into your DAW, and back into Kyma. The Pacamara makes it accessible, and Simon made a video on how to do it using the Dante Protocol too.
@@SpectralEvolverbrilliant man, thank you
Best quote from Ken marshal “ if you’re not running into feedback you’re not trying new things”
Agreed
Whoa. This sounds great! When you drop the Geiger Counter at 2:53, that's the moment!
Hi, these are very helpful for a beginner like me! That said, I hit a snag I’m hoping you might be able to help me with. I’m using the very latest version of Kyma 7. You found and used a “Replicator for multitouch pen control” prototype but I don’t have that anywhere I can find - it’s not in the prototype strip and I also searched all through the whole Kyma 7 folder - no go. Closest I have is a prototype “Replicator for Pen multitouch polyphony (using _?VoiceNumber suffix)” and I tried to use that but it is differently constructed Sound with less objects - I tried dragging the Multisample Sound into it (both replacing and adding in a mixer) but couldn’t seem to get there. Any help appreciated!
Hi Scott, I sent you an email. That prototype will work, but it's hard to say exactly where the hang-up is without seeing the signal flow graph and parameter fields. I'm sure it's just a bit of code that needs adjusting.
👍👍👍
Can you export a sound designed in Kyma to be used in another program, say in my case, Renoise?
You can certainly export a .wav, .aiff etc. (the "final" realized sound and do whatever you want to it from there-import it to Renoise for example), but the Kyma sound algorithm itself will not run without the Kyma hardware.
@@SpectralEvolver I guess that was a stupid question on my part, haha. Ahwell, I wish Kyma had some kind of tracker interface within its ecosystem in order for me to capitalize on the sound algorithm with the APU. Thanks for the timely response! 👍
I wonder why wasn't it more practical ( or rather cheap and dirty, but doing the same thing ) just to drop one high pass filter object right after the final mixing object ?
Hi there! I haven't looked at this sound since we made it, but it could be that there would be clipping (or other issues) earlier in the signal chain that wouldn't be remedied by one final hpf.
@@SpectralEvolver ah, yes. Thanks for pointing that out.
@@SpectralEvolver by the way, any chance you would put out another Kyma tutorial about scripts and green variables? Would be really interesting to learn more about those things.
@@UsedEQuipmnt Thanks for the interest. I'll definitely consider doing something like that. Lately, I've been thinking about what to make next for my channel so it's good to have some suggestions.
Can you make more kyma turning sound into sfx videos
Hello there! Do you mean making sfx with live-input? Or something else?
@@SpectralEvolver I liked the dishwasher in kyma anything really like morphing or whatever you want I liked
Mesmerizing textures, very cool! 🔥🔥🔥
delicious audio! 😀
nice one!
These are very helpful. Thanks! Do you have anything super basic about the Sound to Global controller?
Hi there! Thanks, it's always nice to hear that these tutorials are helpful. I don't think I have a specific video on the SGC, but it is definitely touched on in a number of my videos. What would you like to know?
@@SpectralEvolver Wow! Thanks for responding. Right now I'm using a Generic Source, through a SGC, and into an oscillator, aimed at Frequency. I would like the frequency to be lower, without changing the BPM. I would be very grateful to have your advice!
@@thatsuecarney Are you trying to control the frequency of the oscillator with a sample/live input?
@@SpectralEvolver It is data converted to .aif.
Interesting
😂
What...is this?
Sublime...
Very exciting to watch! Thank you for all info! On the side note, how can autoloop can be stopped so maybe one loop can start then stopped while another with slow ramp is going which again can be stopped? For further clarification, I would like to have more control over loops with enabling and disabling them while having the option of slow ramp and delicate envelope so it does not stop without adsr.
You could separate a few frequency bands for each amplitude follower too, I wonder how to do that without overlapping the bands if i decide to modulate the bands range or freqs too. Or simply switch quickly what range each follower will read
YES
Can we load other samples on this thing?
Yes, absolutely!
@SpectralEvolver I put the order in for one of the new pacamaras, but it will take it another month until they receive it. What I like about Kyma is the sound quality, although most of the examples out there don't show that. It also seems to be an amazing tool for exploration, but what I'm afraid is the learning curve. What is the best way to start in your opinion?
@@Glin-z1t Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the Kyma family! There's no substitute for regular, dedicated practice. I have a handful of videos that will lay the groundwork which you might find useful, read Kyma X, and Kyma and The Sum of Sines, and if you want one-on-one lessons I'm available for that as well. ua-cam.com/play/PLF_py3Xyge9OQhcpjpvDjhRhc8tZ7r9lQ.html
@SpectralEvolver Thanks, sir! I've watched all your videos already, but I'm sure I will watch them again.
Regarding 1on1, how can I reach out?
Hello, awesome video, so many useful tips, it was very amusing to watch, especially the ending! I was wondering, is there a way to connect kyma to some sort of live video manipulating program, maybe MaxMSP Jitter or maybe something else? So that signal from kyma triggers the live video motion
Hey! Thanks for tuning in and I'm happy to hear it was useful for you. Yes, this can absolutely be done, and Jitter would be an excellent option. Although I haven't personally done it yet, I could imagine it happening using OSC, as one option.
Very useful. I find the Kyma X manual useful still, as it seems more clearly laid out than the version 7 one.
Happy to hear this is useful. Agreed! X is the scripture. Admittedly, I haven’t spent a lot of time on the 7 pdf though. I prefer printed, bound books :)
What is the point if it sounds like s***t?
Dude! Sounds amazing! We’ll have to lay down some tracks together soon!
Thanks! It’s a lot of fun. I’m pleased with the sound too. It’s what I was imagining in my head before it was restored. Maybe it can be incorporated with the beats we are working on?
My cat is freaking out hearing that lol
Thanks so much for making this Kyma content, man - and also that you're going in depth to show how it's done as well is amazing! I don't have a Kyma system yet but I'm having such a blast watching your vids on it
Somehow I never heard about the Kyma system even after thinking I had seen it all in music production tools - I've been feeling so bored of the processes I had learned of sound design that I was thinking of leaving the hobby altogether, but finding this technology makes me feel SO excited again Sorry for the random 4 AM rant on your vid, but I just can't believe this alien-tech has been blessed to us from Symbolic Sound
I have one of these arriving shortly. No idea if it’s working or not. Any advice in advance greatly appreciated
Ok, so my yet another next question would be, how do you save modified sounds without overwriting the original? Just by saving under different name ? Or there's some other procedure? Thanks
Ok, so my next amateur question would be: is there a difference between command+c/command +v combination and just dragging and dropping into a parameter field? Or is command+c / v the only way Kyma prefers to have things from prototypes inputted into parameter fields?
Drag and drop is an option depending on the scenario. What exactly are you trying to drag and drop?
@@SpectralEvolver sure. Let's say I want to use lfo modulation of frequency parameter
@@UsedEQuipmnt In this case you can copy/paste the LFO directly into the frequency parameter field. If you remove the 'L' the modulation will be at the sample rate, if you leave the 'L' the modulation will be at CapyTalk rate.
@@SpectralEvolver I see. So, just dragging lfo module from prototypes into frequency parameter field won't work?
Sounds quite useful for videogame sounds. Are you using a Pacamara or your CPU?
Thanks, I agree! Neither actually. I'm using the previous generation of hardware from Symbolic Sound-the Pacarana. Kyma needs its proprietary hardware to process the audio so the CPU isn't even an option. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have more questions. Cheers!
@@SpectralEvolver Do you know if these hardware solutions are using SHARC chips as the UAD Apollo devices?
@@SaccoBelmonte That I do not know.
Could you please explain a bit more about that "evaluate" function? Is it something one could ask Kyma to test newly typed capitalk or smalltalk algorithms without actually compiling and running them ? Or what is exactly it for?
Hi there! It's a convenient way to evaluate expressions directly in the parameter field as well as other places. Say you wanted to know what 100 hz is in nn. You could type 100 hz nn and evaluate it. You can do arithmetic, concatenate units as in the previous example, etc. Perhaps a couple of useful ways to think about it are understanding the expression deeper, or getting the result of the expression for use elsewhere. Hope that helps! Let me know. Cheers!
I was wondering about that "Accept" button below the parameters section. You don't seem to touch it at all when making changes to a sound. So, what's the purpose of it?
The “accept” button can be clicked after changes have been made, or if the white space around the signal flow graph is double clicked there is the same outcome. I prefer the latter.
Finally understood how BT makes his whole song go from straight 4/4 to swing, than blends, freezes, etc...This is just amazing!
I love how this set up is all its own little world, a sacred sound tower.
Thank you. Couldn't have said it better myself!
Hello! Thanks for the test! The acoustic guitar sounds very good and balanced. The voice sounds good too! There are no raised high frequencies here (like condenser microphones). Great for guitar and voice! Very warm sound. For a combo, I still think the proven SM57 or Sennheiser E906 :)
