Nice and simple method :) If the bodice has underarm princess seams you can match you sleeve seams to those.
This is so helpful, thank you! I just started sewing, and this is exactly what I needed!
What is the needle to column distance?
I’m not sure what the measurement is, Gavin. I no longer have this machine, so I cannot measure it for you.
I have this machine, can ou confirm to me if reverse stitch will land on the same hole as normal stich? Lengthwise, I can't set mine to have the same stitch size front and back 😅 I wanted to sew leather, and the needle has to come back to the same holes. I actually own 3 of these machines, and none does it exactly right. Is it a common behavior, or am I just unlucky? Mines do backstitch always a bit shorter than foreward stitch lengh. Thanks in advance
Thank u so much
You are most welcome!❤
I have one also. I got it to sew deer hides and it worked beautifully. Now it will only zigzag on fabric. Sewing the hides it doesn't sew at all. Any tips please. I have projects I need this machine for.
You may need to use a walking foot machine to sew deer hides with or a machine that is made specifically to sew leather with. Another option might be getting a foot that is made to sew leather with. Be careful with sewing this on a regular basis on your 20U. It could throw the timing off.
Exactly what I needed! I have 3 pairs of pants to cuff for a customer. Thank you!
Thank you! I’m glad the video is helpful to you.
thanks Monti. just installed this machine in my mini factory and had no idea where to start. this was exactly what I needed
I’m so glad the video was helpful. Good luck with your mini factory!
Really great video. Thanks so much!
It’s my pleasure!
Hola que agujas usa esa máquina singer 20U
Gracias por tu pregunta. Varias empresas fabrican agujas de melana para encajar in Singer 20u. Singer agujas #134R y Organ DPX 5. Las agujas de tamari medio son 80/12 y 90/14.
Beautiful work!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge in this easy to follow video!
Glad it was helpful!🙂
What thread do you recommend to use with this machine?
Thank you for your question. The type of thread that you use will depend on type and weight of fabric. The most popular threads will be a polyester or a blend of poly and cotton. If you are using synthetic fabric, I suggest staying with the polyester. Sewing with cotton or linen is better with the poly/ cotton blend. The average weight for apparel weight fabrics such as dresses, tops or mid to lightweight pants is 33 for a size 80/12 needle and 46 for a 90/14 needle. There are many types of threads depending on the type of fabrics you choose, such as silk, nylon, lycra content and leather. The needles also vary depending on the fabrics as well. I like to test my fabric with the needle and thread to see how they react together before I begin a project.
am hoping to buy 20u for free motion embroidery. will post back how I go. thank you for this video.
Please let me know how you’re doing with your free motion machine. it sounds like fun!
Hi Monti, how do you oil the machine?
You can take the top off, a few screws and it has a oil drip pan. You oil the pan and it should drip where it needs to go.
There are two types of oiling systems for industrial machines. The newer machines are self oiling. They have a pan underneath the machine. There is an oil pump attached to the under side of the sewing machine that will distribute the oil to the pan. If your machine does not have an oil pump, then you need to keep adequate oil in this pan by filling it to the indication marks. The older machines (and some specialty industrial machines) use the “wicking” method to oil. Inside the machine is fibrous pads that soak the oil up and distribute the oil to necessary areas. These machine will have holes in the top of the machine to put the oil in with a dispenser. My Singer 20u is this method. The pan in this type of machine is shallow and is there only to catch drips from the machine. Don’t add oil to these pans! It will make a mess and doesn’t oil your machine.
What a wonderful tutorial! Great job. 👏🏻
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Monti, just wondering if you might know what size belt the Singer 20U professional uses. We picked up a machine, but it came without a belt. We've tried a 45" x 1/2" V-belt, but too short and we think that the V is too wide.
I don’t know the size but, go to www.singer online.com or call this number 800-59-6729. M-F 9 to 4:30. They are in Ohio. They can tell you what size you need. The website is really fun. They sell all kinds of accessories for your machine. It’s worth checking out!
Monti, Have you ever seen a 20u with the hand wheel removed for a needle positioner system??..
No I haven’t seen this. I would think this is for use in a factory situation?
I just started sewing recently and the curved hem was driving me insane!!! Thank you SO MUCH for this video!
I’m so glad it was helpful! 😉
This was super helpful thank you! All the cues and descriptions make this process much easier to understand. The pin to the ironing board to get the clean fold on the hem is genius! I haven't come across that before.
I’m so glad the video was helpful. Yes. pinning to the ironing board will prevent your fingers from getting burnt too.🙂
Thank you
it’s my pleasure!
just came across your tutorial and enjoyed how very thorough it was. Great for beginners to advanced! Thank you for taking the time to prepare this as a valuable tool for both beginner and refresher for long time sewers.

Greetings from France 🥰 Congratulations 👏. The more I watch YOUR videos which are so well explained the more I want to get to my machine. Zippers and collars WERE my enemies 😅 no longer. Today I'll be fitting a zipper into my pants I'm working on. I thought it was IMPOSSIBLE AND ONLY FOR PROFESSIONALS. Finally its easy peasy. Pockets without zipper I've made many but this one was NOT FOR ME. You made it sew so simple and sewing becomes a PLEASURE AND ENJOYABLE EVEN AT THE RIPE OLE AGE OF 72😅😅😂. I am watching all your beginners videos. I have a computerized Brother since 1982 and made hundreds of shirts with collars and pants for my 2 year old son (in 1982) and shirts for my father in law and blouses WITH COLLARS, pants, pjs and more for me. But after my tragic aggression in 2015 where I first got paralyzed, 6 months on a wheelchair, then last chance, had back surgery, nothing interested me, not even my knitting machines. Just hugged all my faithful fur pals, a Newfoundland and Labrador and 14 cats in 2015 all of them gone since 2018. A HALT UNTIL AUGUST 2023, THREE WEEKS AGO. Fell upon your flutter sleeve video and got hooked and "threaded". Your videos are so helpful and encouraging and boosts me to LOVE my machine. My Mom taught me to sew dolls clothes at the age of 6 a tiny tot, on her super Singer with a giant size pedal 😅😅. No patterns, just tracing around dolls clothes and then sending it to the machine. What was great with this pedal machine was when I was given a shelling I hid myself under the sewing machine comfortably seated on the pedal. Mom couldn't find me but my silly dogs 21 of them, all barking and wagging their tails, sent her to me😂😂 . I'm sure she had a giggle but had to pretend to punish me also. Thanks for sharing caring and making a 72 year old SMILE 😊. BEARY HUGS FROM MY 5 year, 70 KILO GENTLE GIANT MY NEWFOUNDLAND a great water rescue dog, 5 loud purrs and a hug 🤗 from me. 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🤗🤗🤗
Thank you sharing your heart warming story with me! I’m so glad you enjoy my videos. It’s so nice to get to know others with a love for sewing!
Oooops forgot, SUBSCRIBED IMMEDIATELY. ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰
Thank you!❤
Greetings from France 🥰 Congratulations. A big wowwzy. I am 72 years and thought of making a sleeve out of the ordinary 😂. Will people make fun outta me???? I found this video and FELL IN LOVE WITH THE FLUTTER SLEEVE. SO GRATEFUL and ELEGANT. I have watched many many videos ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF SLEEVES. The flutter sleeve IS MY FAVORITE but other videos were discouraging. Yours is EXCEPTIONAL, SO WELL EXPLAINED, A VERY CALM POISED SOFT VOICE, AND THE MEASUREMENTS ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. This is MAGIC. I have to try this first on an old tee shirt, don't wanna waste my stretch fabric. I will have many helping cat paws with the paper pattern and drool from my Gentle Giant on the edge of the table. My best ever faithful fur pals. Thats part of the fun making my shirts and blouses ITS STRESS FREE with my now 5 cats, one just died, wrongly diagnosed for arthritis over a month, Vet refused an xray of her chest, she had a minor breathing problem. End result, two days before she suffered in agony the vet decided to get this x-ray. My cats lungs had detached from the "wall of the stomach" sending too much air into her heart. Had the vet listened to me😪 she wouldn't have endured all this. Worst part is that i asked him to PUT HER TO SLEEP AND HE REFUSED. I KNOW MY ANIMALS BY HEART. So making this flutter sleeve will be in her memory. Thanks for sharing caring and making a 72 year old SMILE. Beary hugs from my water rescue dog my 5 year Newfoundland and hugs 😊🤗🤗🤗 from me. 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹
I’m so sorry to hear you lost your beloved kitty. Thank you for all the kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the flutter sleeve video. I love making them too❤
I have acquired the same exact machine, which I love. Straight stitch works perfectly fine. One issue is zig zag seems to bunch the fabric under the zig zag stitch. I even loosened the tension all the way and this did not fix. Do you have any suggestion on this beautiful machine?
It could be caused by several things. The needle size needs to be compatible to your fabric. Make sure that your needle isn’t too large or small. The lighter weight the fabric, the smaller the needle. Also, try changing your needle and using a new one. Needles don’t have to be broken or chipped to not perform properly. Sometimes they are just dull. You may need to adjust the size of your zigzag widths or length. It your fabric is light weight, it may not accommodate a wide stitch. The 20u is made to sew a wide variety of fabrics, so all stitch settings aren’t ideal for all fabrics. The lighter the fabric, the less likely the wider zigzag will perform properly. If you try all the settings and needles, you may need to have the head serviced.
Thank you soooo much for your video! I am doing a cuff for the first time on dress pants for my son to wear to his sister's wedding. Excellent instructions!
I’m so glad you found the cuff video helpful!
BEST narrow curved hem video I've ever seen
Thank you so much! I’m glad it was helpful!
brilliant tutorial, just what I wanted
it’s my pleasure!
Thank you so much dear. Be blessed
Thank you, I’m glad you liked the video
Could you please show what a zigzag satin stitch at "0" would look like? Thank you!
I no longer have my 20u! I miss it too.
Thank you very helpful. But please use a planned fabric so we can follow visually also
ThNk you for the suggestion! I will select fabrics that are easier to see in my. ext videos.
I get it now, very clear, very helpful, thanks!
I’m glad the video was helpful, Henry!
Beautiful 🥰👍🙏
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this, please which part of the machine I'm to oil? I can't find any.
This machine has an oil wicking system. It does not have an oil pan in the bottom that is drawn up into the machine. There are oiling hole on the top of the machine that you squeeze the oil into. You don’t need a lot of oil. just a few drops in each hole is enough. The oil will then collect in the shallow pan underneath the machine as you use it. Occasionally check the pan and make sure oil is clean.
Such a nice technique. Makes it way easy. Thank u for sharing. ❤
I'm glad you like it Bernabe!
Wonderful! Thankyou.
It's my pleasure!
What is the name of the fabric you used?
This is Satin. It's a heavier weight suitable for jackets, etc.
Do you have a sewing tutorial for inserting?
Hi Kathleen, Do you mean sewing the sleeve into the armhole?
@@SewWithMonti yes
Sorry, this question was for another post. It was for the video for those complete circle style.

Good afternoon. Mrs. Monti, great tutorials on this bomber jacket. I'm doing the same jacket, but I'm using pattern C. I'm making a XXL, however when I did a trial run I found out 2 things. (#1) I'm gonna need to use the XXXL pattern for a little extra room. (#2) I'm also gonna need to lengthen it. Lengthening the back pattern will be no problem. However, at the lengthening lines on the front has a pocket going thru the lengthening lines. Will I need to extend the pocket as well?
Hi Sterling, You don't need to lengthen the pocket. It can stay the same size, but you need to lower it's position on the pattern. Use the lower mark after adjusting the front jacket and add the the upper pocket placement mark the correct distance from the lower one. This will keep the pocket in the correct postion.
@@SewWithMonti Thank you for your advice, I'll let you know how it comes out. 👍🙏
@@smcgee2010
Please do! I'd love to see your jacket completed.
@@SewWithMonti Good evening Monti, I finished my Bomber Jacket today. I made a few changes, I drafted a hoodie and different pockets. Thanks to your instructions, the lining construction was a breeze. 🙏🙂 I want to share the photos with you, once I figure it out - I'll send. 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Monti. Me again 😅. Are you using all purpose polyester thread on this tutorial? When I purchased my machine it was setup for 69 bonded nylon. Just curious as to the different threads the machine could use. Thank you for your time.
Hi Isis, My apologies for the delayed response. You can use bonded nylon, but I use Polyester thread on my machine mostly. These machines are really not meant for heavy duty sewing and 69 bonded nylon is usually a heavy duty thread. You can use it, but it's not the most desired thread for this machine.
Hi Monti! Can’t thank you enough. I am brand new to industrial sewing machines. You having taken the time to making this video means a lot. It’s the most thorough and informative video I’ve seen.
It's my pleasure Isis!
This sleeve video is just too correct. Thank you so much. Have been looking for a perfect sleeve block .
I'm so glad the sleeve block video was helpful!
