As an avid hiker and outdoors enthusiast, I am fortunate to hike in some of the most incredible national parks and have vast experience and tips for others wishing to visit these parks and hike these trails. In particular, I have a lot of videos from the trails of the West Coast of the USA, namely at Yosemite, Mount Rainier and Joshua Tree.
In 2016 I hiked the JMT (John Muir Trail) in California and in 2017 the High Sierra Trail, whilst I hiked the Wonderland Trail in 2023.
In 2024 I have plans for a backpacking trip in Yosemite and will be hiking the Wonderland Trail in summer 2024.
I 'd really appreciate it if you could like and subscribe to my channel and comment on your hiking experiences.

Heading to Yosemite for the second time in late June. Plan to do the Mist Trail up to Nevada Falls again, and do Clouds Rest and Tioga Road for the first time. Also thinking Mariposa Grove, Hetch Hetchy and Wapama Falls, plus all the Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point highlights (Taft Point and Sentinel Dome). We have six full days, and thinking about one of the following: Four Mile Trail, Panorama Trail (hike down only from Glacier Point) or North Dome. I'm leaning Four Mile, North Dome, Panorama in that order, but feeling torn. Which would you choose and why? Thanks!
My thinking on those three mentioned above: Four Mile... Looks like some great views and scary dropoffs trail side, but also lots of tree'd in areas with no views? If you're already doing Taft, Sentinel, and Glacier Point, are the views along the Four Mile Trail worth the extra time and effort? Are the views that unique and must see? Panorama... This seems to be most people's pick, but for now it's probably the least likely one I'll choose. Illiouette (sp?) Falls definitely intrigues me, though you really don't get very good views of it except at the one sketchy cliff across from it. I've read/heard it's quite steep with few views climbing up after Illiouette toward the JMT and Nevada Falls (which I'm planning to hike separately). And while the views at the top of the trail look amazing, are they really that different than the views from Glacier and Washburn Points roadside? North Dome... The end view would be a perspective I've not seen prior of both Half Dome and Clouds Rest... looks amazing. BUT... the trail looks rather boring through the woods most of the way. So that's where I'm at. Interested in all three, but completely sold on none. Thanks for any advice you can provide!
Did you drive through 41 or 140? Thanks
Oh wow! Thanks for the info
Now this was a helpful video, exactly the tour and info I was looking for. Thanks for including wheelchair accessibility too.
Great Vvdeo, you got lucky with the view.
Looks like a great early winter hike Rob! Good on you for giving it a shot and for turning back when it felt right to.
A beautiful hike, amdno worries on your turn back you made the right call. How nice it must've been to have all of that beauty and winter wonderland stillness to yourself. 🤩
I wrapped up my "season" at Yosemite yesterday! Did this Clouds Rest hike a couple weeks back. I LOVE the fall conditions (especially absence of crowds)
Rob, I consider myself fit and found it hard, it’s the air and altitude this time of year, go easy on yourself. 😂
Thanks! It was a tough slog compare to the summer but still stunning!
That poo is a bobcat ! 😂
Oh wow! Thanks, shame I didn’t see the bobcat!
Crazy we did it the same day !!
Yeah it was freezing in the AM ! I started around 945am
I had a break at the top also, that log is a good perch
Sounded like you had a good day, it was perfect weather for it. Happy trails!
Nice informative video Rob. I'm heading to Bryce this weekend and will check out this trail, thanks!
Have a wonderful time it’s such a unique and beautiful park!
Clouds Rest never disappoints!
Absolutely! It’s one of the best! :)
Thank you for the video! We are planning on this hike next week (as per your recommendation from previous videos)! Hopefully the roads are not closed as you said. We will be staying in curry village. What time should we start and how far from curry village is the trail? We are novices but are encouraged.
Thanks for watching :) Its around 45 mins to an hour drive from the Valley to Tenaya Lake for the trailhead. I would recommend hiking at sunrise, as its maximises your time in the daylight. Sunset was 18:15 when I was in the park, so bear in mind you will want to get back before dark. Have a great time on the trail!
@@RobHikes thank you so much!!!
So great to meet you on trail! We hope to cross paths again… I’m sure I’ll be able to pick out that voice again from a parking lot 😂
So lovely to meet you and thanks again for your kind words. Haha glad the British accent was so obvious!! Hope you had a great hike :)
A beautiful trail, thank you for sharing it. You are a great narrator, offering insight into the trails and whst others can expect on them. I love visiting Yosemite, and realize there's so much more to see and experience than just the Valley. Re: that tree you asked for identification, it looked like a redwood tree. Question; what kind of camera and tripod do you use? Also, what editing program? I want to get something affordable to film my travels with and perhaps start a vlog for YT and am researching options , so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
Aww thank you so much! and thanks for confirming the tree! I use a GoPro Hero Black 11 and I edit everything in iMovie, so nothing fancy here. The tripod is the 3 way arm for the GoPro which also works as a selfie stick! Hope this helps! :)
@@RobHikes thank you for the info! Take care!
In the middle of the night, let’s say tou wanna use restroom, how would you do that?
I would just walk to the restroom with a flashlight!
Thanks for sharing another video of Angels Landing Rob. I'm hiking tomorrow morning (mid-October) and won't have snow to contend with, but this is still helpful info!
Oh wow, how were the conditions? I can't wait to get back to Zion! :)
@@RobHikes conditions were perfect (dry and cool). I was on the first shuttle at 7 am and there were only three people who summited before me (used e-bikes to reach the trailhead).
Thanks for sharing your experience Rob. I am hiking Angels Landing tomorrow and this video is helpful prep!
Hope you had an amazing time!
I’m heading up next week, so late October, any tips on conditions ? Thinking of layering incase of a cold snap, but suspecting it could still be hot.
Also, would one walking stick for a 38 year old fit, be enough?
I just came back from Clouds Rest and posted a new video. it was pretty chilly in the morning but warmed up in the day. One stick would be fine, I only use them as it makes me feel better in snake country haha!
@@RobHikesthanks mate, I just did it, was great and tough, the fallen tree to hop over was fun
Wow! There is barely any water at the Bridal Falls. Thank you for the video.
It was crazy to see! Hopefully we will have a good winter and get some amazing snowmelt in spring and summer 😀
nice video. Sorry if I missed it but what were the dates of your travel?
It was late June 😃
I love that hike. It’s almost flat the whole way.
It’s so easy, yet so beautiful! 😍
What a spectacular scenery man! This looks amazing!
Thanks for watching, it sure is a beautiful place 😍
Hey Rob look into getting a Therma cell for the bugs it will keep them off of you.
Oh wow thanks for the tip! I’ll look it up!
Just booked a spot here (300 based on the video)! Looking forward to seeing Yosemite for the first time in October.
Have a great time! Yosemite in October is perfect ✨
RMNP is my "home park" and is such a dream in the autumn Rob. Glad you got to enjoy it!
You’re so lucky! It’s such a great park. I wanna summit Longs Peak next summer!
I'm planning to hike it this fall
Have a great time! I’m hoping to bag another summit in a couple weeks if it’s still accessible!
Wow, great views! Was just at yosemite and wish i saw your video sooner - next time. Have you ever seen a rattlesnake at yosemite? Lol
Thankfully, no! It’s my biggest fear and honestly, it can impact whether I hike sometimes 😔
Your hiking videos are so great Rob. I love your conversational style and all the helpful info you share. Thank you!
Aww that’s so sweet of you to say, thank you for watching!
I'm hitting this trail tomorrow Rob and I appreciate this intel. Thanks, as always!
Hope you had a great time!!
No such thing as a "fail" hike, but it is definitely disappointing when the weather doesn't cooperate. Thanks for sharing the reality and your positive outlook!
Hopefully next time I’ll see the view 😜
Your detailed informative videos are great Rob. Much appreciated!
Thank you 🙏🏻
This is so helpful Rob! It's amazing how different the waterfalls are from June to September.
It’s crazy how fast it changes! Mother Nature doesn’t stand still!
Hey Rob. thanks for the video. How hot was it in yosemite last week? We just got back from sequioa / kings canyon last night. was a bit warm at lodgepole campgrounds!
It’s funny as some days was in the 90s! But I see snow is forecast this week so Fall is here!
Thank you for making this! I've been thinking about doing a seasonal job in winter at Shenandoah and this gave me a great view of what it might look like there :)
It’s an awesome park and it was so cool to experience out of usual season
Thank you for the video. I will be visiting Yosemite early next month on a weekday for the first time. I may miss the waterfalls but I wanted to the view and other beauty of nature. Less crowds and bugs, easy parking and cooler temperatures just works for me. 😅 Thinking about going Glacier Point on this trip. Just wondering if the free shuttles still operate around this time to go around the valley. Again , I appreciate for posting the video and helps me what to expect.
Sorry that I’m only now picking this up, I hope you had a great trip and enjoyed the park 😀
Stunning views and wonderful ambience at Yosemite. Definitely on my list of parks to visit in the next year or so, hopefully. Thanks for taking us along! Have a great weekend 😍👍
Get out there when you can, there’s no place like it! Thanks for watching!!
The river looks so clear and to see those elk in the river? Very cool! Curious what time of year you were there - we are going there shortly!
It was in February so was pretty cool! Hope you have an amazing time there :)
@@RobHikes thank you!
Hi Rob, how was the bugs/mosquito situation there (assuming you went there around July/August)? And how big in general are the ground space for the tents? Can't rally tell since you staked yours so tightly in-between the table and the ring. Thanks!
They were annoying but I’ve seen much worse, it was early July if that helps :) there was plenty of space I just used a small area but the site itself was big
Did anything happened ?
I'm still alive 😆
This looks and feels amazing my friend! Absolutely gorgeous hike 🥾🥾
It was a good workout
Brother you are forgetting that the Price includes the Miraculous View right outside your cabin. Debatably one of the BEST IN THE WORLD!!!
Very true!
how much is the shower?
I’m sorry I didn’t get the exact price but they usually are a couple dollars
Great video Rob. I will be spending the month of September in Sequoia/Kings Canyon and will for sure check out all of these spots!
Another great hike (and less popular) in Sequoia is Marble Falls in the Foothills area.
I'm planning this hike in September. Is the stream you mentioned reliable or seasonal?
Which stream do you mean? I think there was a couple in there, just so I give most accurate info I can! :)
@@RobHikesI see a stream at 14:01 of the video. Then you mention a stream at 16:44 of the video. Thanks for your help.
@@carmenibarra4243 The streams mentioned later are definitley risky for late in the season after dry weather. I would say the Lake at 15:00 is the last reliable/guarenteed source without stepping off trail too much! I know this is vague but id hate to say it will be there and you run out of water!
Thank you this is helpful.
Hi Rob. The lethal drop you mentioned at 25:28 is about where my sister slid off and died several year ago. It is difficult to watch and so scary.
I am so sorry, what an awful thing for your family!
Hi Rob! Thanks so much for the video review. My wife and I are going to this campground in the fall. Was it very full when you were there? It looks pretty empty. Also how cold did it get at night? Finally were there many bugs/mosquitos? Thank you!!
Hi Gary! It was booked as full as it was a weekend, but the loop I was in was very quiet. I was also at the edge of the campground with woods behind me. I had a few bugs but nothing too bad, but I did put some spray on before I sat outside and had dinner. Have a great time!!
@@RobHikes Will do thanks so much for all the information its really helpful. Did it cool off significantly at night?
@@garyconley69 I spent most the night outside of my bag, it was very comfortable temperature all night!
@@RobHikes thanks Rob. appreciate it!!
Good video n thanks
Thanks for watching!
