    The MPF-102 is an "N-channel" transistor, and is turned off when the movable negative electrons in the transistor body are pushed out of the silicon, changing it to an insulator. You can also buy "P-channel" transistors which work backwards: their silicon is full of movable positive charges called "holes," and they are turned off by a positive charge on the gate. Try buying a few 2N5460

    Very nice but traditionally a red color is used for the positive polarity (or north pole for magnetics) and blue is typically negative. Also an LED without a resistor is a bit risky for possible overcurrent damage to the LED.

    • @sphynxusa
      @sphynxusa 9 місяців тому

      I agree it's risky, but the JFET's intrinsic resistance (R_DS(on)) and the characteristics of the LED (forward voltage and current rating) play a role in limiting the current to a safe level because neither the LEDs nor the transistors have ever blown up on me. I've been looking for an RDS curve since for this JFET since you mentioned it and have not been able to find one. Now, I'm curious about that.

      @@sphynxusa what transistor for the positive and negative I built one with mpf 102 but the light stays on

    • @sphynxusa
      @sphynxusa 5 років тому

      @@parabugsknowingtheunknown. MPF102 is an N-Channel JFET, which is on unless the gate detects an electric field. Use a P-Channel JFET for electric fields of the opposite polarity. If the light stays on, you need to reset it by touching your finger on the gate, then move closer to the charge you want to detect and the LED will turn back on.

      @@sphynxusa can I make that with 2n2222?

    • @sphynxusa
      @sphynxusa 4 роки тому

      @@tetraederzufrequenztesla2342 No, the 2n2222 is a bipolar junction transistor (BJT), you need an FET (field-effect transistor). The gate is very sensitive to the surrounding electric field, which creates a potential (microvolts) difference between the gate and the drain. In the 2n2222, the base expects a current (micro amps) not a voltage to drive the collector current. That is, the BJT is a current-controlled current source while the FET is a voltage controlled current source.

    I was wondering, does the water tank(the bottle) have to be above the engine? Does it matter?

    • @sphynxusa
      @sphynxusa 10 років тому

      Heated water is less dense than cold, so it will rise and exit from the top (red) and the cooler water will enter from the bottom. The position of the water tank does not matter because the driving force is the density of the fluid, not gravity.

    Thanks Leondro, I used epoxy putty (used in plumbing -- see link in description). Form shape of piston in piston cylinder with lots of vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Sets like steel in 20 minutes and very light. Be sure to use lots of vegetable oil or the putty will harden inside the cylinder. Also mark the position of the dried piston to conform to any anomolies in the shape of the glass. Drilled hole after it set to insert metal rod hinge and attached w/ JB Weld.
