A short clip of the Flycycle in road mode, followed by a flight under electric power from Clench Common to Bowden Farm. Travelling as the crow flies at the same speed, over the green English countryside.
Flycycle mk 7 Electric road and air vehicle

After my last wing got eaten by mice, I aquired an Aeros 13 sq M strutted wing. At the same time I adapted a DYU S2 250W electric bike rear wheel and pedals. In this form it is road legal in the UK as an E.A.P.C. In flight it is an S.S.D.R. microlight aircraft. The flight motor is a Geiger HDP10, the battery pack is 2kwh. This gives me about 70 miles road range at max. 15mph or 20 minutes still...

First electric flight, Geiger motor, Vedder controller, Flytek 2kwh Lipo 14s pack. Very quiet and climbs at about 400fpm with 9kw. I can sustain level flight at about 3.5kw and 1600rpm. The Vedder controller is excellent, being bluetooth programmable from my phone and also giving real time data. So far so good!
Flycycle short XC

Clench Common to Yatesbury via Martinsell hill on a perfect winter's day. Takeoff is very easy, landing is easy provided the control frame is pushed fully out as it settles. It's a case of coming in with some excess speed, steadily bleeding it off in the ground effect till it settles.

Flycycle Takeoff and Landing
Переглядів 9213 роки тому
Takeoff, climb out and landing on a calm evening. It's great to fly at 1ft height. The wing is in ground effect and floats along easily. Vittorazzi 100cc engine and Solar Wings Fever wing. Takeoff is a case of simply opening the throttle and wait till it flies - then allow the control frame to come back and the wing to trim itself in pitch. For landing, look well ahead, pull on some speed on ap...
snow21 matador

A ride on a Mercury Matador in the snow. It is 48" span and struggles to lift the camera a bit and the CG is too far forward, hence no flare on landing and an "arrival". No harm done though.
Hybrid electric flycycle!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 роки тому
During the 2nd lockdown I decided to install an electric scooter rear wheel so I can ride to the airfield! It needs a bit of help up the hills but does 15mph on the flat. The extra 3kg or so at the back means I can now stall the wing with the control frame fully pushed out at 21mph, max straight and level speed 42. About 5 miles road range on a 2kg battery and 2 hours/70 miles on 10L in the air...
FLYCYCLE MARK 5 FLIES!
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 роки тому
I did not train another pilot adequately and he was unstable on his approach then failed to flare out and nosed in - everything got bent except for him! So I have redesigned it as mk 5, no pedals, much smaller tailwheel, better fairing, less drag and weight. Great to be flying again. On this layout it is absolutely necessary to approach at a good speed 35-40mph, check the rate of descent near t...

A few thermal soaring turns in my Jodel DR1050, Rotax 912S idling. The still air minimum sink rate at this power setting is about 450fpm, just on the edge of the stall warner sounding. The thermal must have been rising at about 600fpm. It can be seen that the airspeed is a poor indicator of angle of attack. The stall warner, sensing AOA, comes on in 1g flight about 7kt above the stall, but in a...

Anyone know how much it would cost to buy/build one?
I have a doodle bug, got me wondering! Thanks for posting.
That shaking in the air was scary
Fantastic engineering, cycling and flying a perfect combination 👍
I’m not entirely sure how in 2024, you still record videos in max 720p .
Nice flight Bill.
You my friend are my hero. I been building this in my dreams forever. Any chance you can post a video of a walkaround, showing a bit more details of this gem? 👍👍👍
Hi, I did this walk around on my previous kingposted wing (which got eaten by mice!). The current strutted Aeros Fox 13 one is easier but the process is similar. ua-cam.com/video/JgLFhzvA4J0/v-deo.html
@@williambrooks2731 dang that was n expensive dinner they had, hope the lil buggers left a tip. Lol. I think I've watched every one of your vids, but I will check that link for sure. Thanks...a closeup of the trike/bike would be very welcome! I have n old Bill Bennett trike but would love to build this for the mere functionality because my airport is only 2 miles south, so this would be perfect. Prolly go with 2stroke paramotor for engine for now tho, since I have n old mz34 laying around. Thanks again for the inspiration!👍👍👍
Is there any plans available for it , sweet practical machine 👌🇦🇺
Hi there, can send a set of plans and invoice you £100. My current version is all electric for road and air.
Hello, super cool. I like this position and the weight near of the wings, for thermal flight beter than conventional trike. It is possible to buy plan? For France.Thants , have a good fly.
Hi Michael, yes I do have some plans available, my latest version is all electric for road and air. I can send you a set and invoice £100.
Fantastic
I would love to go cross country like this.
Thats a great design, I'm thinking of making one eventually, and this has expanded whats possible for me.
Hi Ted, thanks! the whole idea was to make a roadable trike, which my own machine is. However, there's almost no compromise in flying performance and has certain advantages over a conventional trike. It's a little lighter because the control frame does 2 jobs, taking both ground and flight loads. Ground handling is very easy. The only thing not to do is land with the bar pulled in - but that's not a great idea with a conventional trike either. I pull on lots of speed to get through the wind gradient, then bleed off the speed in ground effect till it wont fly any more and it touches down with the bar fully out.
@@williambrooks2731Hello, William! What you did is amazing. Essentially, you've made a roadable aircraft, a flying car. I'm impressed i haven't found out about your achievement sooner. A lot of companies try to make a modern roadable aircraft, lighter and better, and you just did! What do you plan on doing with it now?
now that's thinking outside the box. awesome!
What wing did you use? Thanks
This one is an Aeros 13 sq m strutted wing.
@@billbrooks6247 thanks Bill, fly safe always
Great progress Bill.
Thanks Adrian. Now I can carry a bit more weight I would like a 5-6kwh 14s battery pack! My present one is a 2kwh Li Po, the voltage sags a lot under load, I get 20 mins max. It takes 4.5kw to stay up, climbs at about 250fpm on 7kw. Probably the cold weather doesn't help the battery performance. On the road I get several hours of course!

After watching few videos like this, it is possible my passion for flying would raise and make me build one of these =)
Very cool. Is the landing speed higher then a regular foot landing hangglider?
My pitch limit stop prevents me slowing down below the stall, so I can't ( and dont want to) do a hang glider nil wind foot landing flare. As usual with light and slow machines, I like to pull on speed for better control in the last 30ft height, then bleed off the speed in ground effect till I touch at the stall about 22mph. Also, the suspended mass is about 120kg including me, so stall speed is a bit higher on my 12 sq m wing than would be free flying.
@@williambrooks2731 Thanks! I understand the need for higher landing and take-off speed due to the higher mass. I suppose the cruising speed is also proportionally higher. In level flight @ 3.5kw and 1600rpm what is the airspeed?
@@Acamperfull 1600 rpm about 27 mph, stalls at 22, max straight and level 40.
@@billbrooks690 Thanks again, what a nice setup!
Chain reduction drive and a go-kart clutch .... amazing

Any chance a set of plans will ever be able to be purchased? Very interested, its like you built what has been in my head for a long time!
Noone is gonna mention the part that flew off the prop assembly?

I came across your video while researching for a project of my own, I have a Wills wing sport 3 and am planning a pedal assist electric ultralight trike. What info can you give on the recumbent system you used? Thanks
I’ve got to tell you William, that flycycle is awesome! I assume this is your own design? Do you have plans available, or a list of what’s needed and some photos and/or rough dimensions ? I’m retiring in a couple years, so that would give me a project to put together and have ready at retirement time
Hi there - Yes I did design and develop this design and am continuing to do so, my latest development is an all-electric propulsion option. In the past I designed the Pegasus Quantum, Quasar and Quik range of trikes. I do have a set of plans and will put this on my website soon. Obviously to fly it you need to be a competent trike pilot - a hang glider pilot friend of mine could not cope with the seated position and got into a bad PIO. I find it very easy!
Yes !
nice machine and grass strip - no trees etc
Glad to see you back up again on a new, machine Bill.

Interesting, I've been spinning a quite similar concept in my head for some time and collecting the bits to build. Thank you. Your machine gives me proof of basic concept, no small thing. Very helpful moving forward...I've been out of flying for 8-9 years now and definitely feeling the urge. My background is flying hang gliders for most of the last 35 years, much of my flying was XC obsessive. A lot of competition, both flat land and big mountain. First three flights over 100 mi, 160 km were in 1984, The last season I flew was pretty epic, finishing with flying Chelan and King Mt. comps back to back with one day between, grueling but fun with 7 out of the 11 flights over 100 mi.....Not bragging, but just providing background because I hope to pick your brain as my build progresses. No doubt your input can help me avoid some issues and save time....My basic idea will share parts of your concept, (carriage over the control frame and skinny profile, but some significant differences, so don't be shy about telling me it won't work, heh heh......The final configuration will kinda be tied to what I have to work with, plus a bunch of unknowns.....I still have my old Atos VR, and an old Kasperwing to cannibalize, and other assorted junk....A major difference from your design will be to try to actually roll the whole carriage fore and aft a few inches on a track fixed below the keel instead of swinging it. I have a couple of other crazy ideas to discuss if we can establish a dialog, hopefully thru Email or something else more direct than here on youtube.....Oh, more background. I did spend much of the '90's building and flying a cool little airplane, the Van's RV-4.....Anyway, this is already getting long, gotta go work on my boat. Thks again for proof of basic concept....Joe Evens
Ouch Cheers
