With our motto, "Live Simply and Explore the Wild, " we will post a new episode about every 10 days about our yurt life/yurt tour and adventures in Canada's Far North. (Yukon, Canada)
We, Tammy and Tomohiro, are an international couple who live together in a small yurt and go on adventures with our Malamute cross dog, Tenshi.
We’ve been living a simple and minimal life in our tiny yurt, building a sauna, growing vegetable gardens, chopping wood, and carrying water in the forest in Yukon Territory in Canada's North (next to Alaska). We enjoy experiencing Yukon’s beautiful wilderness and outdoor adventures such as watching dancing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), paddling canoes, hiking mountain trails, ice fishing, and more.

3 Ways to Get Firewood -"Surviving" Yukon Winter -
How do you heat your home? Wood is our only heat source for our yurt.
With winter temperatures going down at times to colder than -40 degrees Celsius, in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, wood is essential for our survival.
So how do we get it?
Well, we have bartered for wood and have even got it as a Christmas present!
In this video, you will see 3 other ways we get firewood.
0:00 Introduction
0:17 Yurt
1:20 Delivery from our wood guy (easiest option)
2:26 Free FireSmart wood (second easiest option)
3:49 Free Permit and cutting our own wood (hardest option)
7:18 Back at the yurt
7:38 Stacking wood in greenhouse
7:57 Relaxing by the fire
Three Ways We Get Our Firewood Explained:
1. We order firewood from our wood guy and he delivers it to the parking spot. We then need to move it to our yurt that is nestled in the forest. The going rate for wood in Whitehorse, Yukon Canada right now is $500 for a cord of bucked wood.
2. "Free" FireSmart. We don't need to pay cash for the wood, but it definitely takes time and physical effort. FireSmart is a Yukon government program that hires professionals to cut trees and other brush to manage wildfires. The wood left stacked on public land is free for the taking.
3. "Free" Permit. No payment for the permit or the wood, but the time, effort, gas, equipment, know-how, etc. is definitely costly. We love the experience of being out in the bush, working together as a family to get the work done, and making sure to keep some standing dead trees for the wildlife.
Enjoy the show!

Hope to see you guys again soon 👍🏻
When is the best time to go and watch them
Nice job, looks like it will be well used
Have you had any issues with moisture/mould in your yurt?
No much up here in the north as it is relatively dry. It gets condensation in winter but it is at the manageable level. We were supervised how little mold was on the inside of the canvas where we moved the yurt last year after using it for 12 years.
Great video! What is the interior height of your trailer? Thanks!
Thanks, it is about 65” tall!
I know that water is cold! Haha. Awesome videos. Love the yurt life.
Thanks for watching!
you should at least build a washroom inside the Yurt. I know some People who build Yurt they build an inside washroom and shower. especially in the winter you can not use a washroom or shower outside when it is freezing cold
Thanks for the comment. We thought about putting the washroom inside first but the one I used at my work had one inside and it always stank like a bathroom, so we are very happy that we didn’t in our case. As for shower, there is no way to build a pipe system that would not freeze in minus 30-40c in the dead of the winter. ( that is what there are so many “dry cabins” in Yukon and Alaska.) Because we have the harsh winter, we have to build our life around it, bearing the inconvenience for the rest of the year. It is just the way it is up here and we accept it. If we really need the convenience, we might as well move into a normal house :-)
You are the happiest people! ❤I wish you good luck and goodness, may the stars and northern lights warm you in the cold! ❤ I want to build a yurt and live in my village in Russia.
Thank you so much for your comment! I hope you will build a nice place :-)
Very creative helpful video thank you
Thank you for watching :-)
Another question. Are the center uprights for the front cabinettes somehow nailed to the floor also?
Hi, I don’t remember exactly how I did it but I don’t think I nailed or secreted the center piece. Probably good idea to use a small L bracket to secure it to the floor to make it stronger.
@@tntnaturecon Thanks!
Really like that acoustic work
Why do you use a fridge having minus 40 degree C around?
So our food doesn’t freeze but still stays cold. Thanks for watching.
Are you using 2x4's for the front cabinets or 2x2? was kinda hard to tell for sure in the video
Hi, I was using 2x2 for the front cabinet. Thanks for watching !
What you have is already 85 % fine sauna for us Finns too. Make one change and you’ll have real sauna experience. Get rid of that stove, that is made for heating cabins and buy real sauna stove. That takes about 50 kg stones in it and have small water tank integrated in it. Whith that real sauna stove you will use sauna more than once a week😉. Have a nice springtime.
That is great advice, MattiPitkanen63. Thanks so much for taking the time to write to us. Very kind of you indeed! We wish you a nice spring too.
Brilliant video!
Glad you liked it!
question when cutting out the windows or air vent was there a trace template? How did you do an perfect cut out?
No there was not a template. I think I made a template using a cardboard. It was as perfect as it looked on the video :-)
I made a template using the cardboard but I don’t think the actual cut out on the metal I made was as perfect as you think :-)
Thanks for the tour of your yurt. It's amazing how you have used the space. The insulation was very interesting.
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching, @snowdrop1590. : )
What about a shower?
We do not have a conventional shower but we have a sauna and outdoor shower attached to the sauna which we use only in the summer.
Thats not sauna. Belive me I know, I am finnish .😂
Yes it is a Canadian sauna, maybe not even a Canadian one. I am not even sure what it even is. not the authentic Finish one for sure haha
Can’t use a camera that long on a real sauna
It definitely got over heated and had to put it outside in a freezing temperature to cool it down for sure. The steam and condensation was more of the problem.
That’s not a sauna .. it’s a hot room… sauna has rocks and you through water on them for humidity…. Also cold water to your skin.
We actually have rocks on the stove that we put water on and enjoy the steam.
Nice job .. but fyi .. shingles are layered from bottom up .. they are upside down .. the same with your metal .. bottom sheet should tuck under the top sheet … you’re asking for a ton of water damage .
Yes thanks shingles are decorative and I am sure I made more errors than you can see in the video haha
Nice video! Just out of curiosity - why do you use leash?
Thanks, dogs need to be on a leash in Kluane National Park to protect hikers from bears. Tenshi loves to be off-leash and we let her free whenever we can. Filming is a little easier when she is on a leash too as she’s quite an explorer.
1:50 Are those wrought iron bars on the ceiling ... strong enough to support a hammock? During the day, I need as much open space as possible.
I doubt they are strong enough for a hammock but it may be. We never tried ourselves but sounds like a good idea if it works!
Very nice job. And so quickly. Can you do one for me this weekend?
Yes for sure, this was me three years ago, so I don’t move as fast as I used to any more :-)
I often wish for the life my Nordic ancestors had, this video resonates with that. Alas I’ll probably never live that life, getting on in my years and I’m not physically the warrior I once was but the spirit is still there burning as brightly as ever.
Glad our video touched your warrior spirit. We are far from warriors ourselves. 😄😄🐕
Very nice !
Ok...I was almost sold on this concept, it looks cozy and relaxing.....UP until you said IF the stove is pumping...it can be +20 Inside...I love cold weather but I'm sorry, that just don't sound pleasurable at all.
We don’t have many days of -30 and colder so for the most part, we are cozy. Thanks for watching Donald Hall.
Is this not a 6x12 looks to big to be a 5x8
The wide angled lens makes it look bigger possibly…we wish it was. 😂 believe us, it’s a 5x8.
What is the brand wood stove you have? And the water tank with the spigot? Just curious. Love that set up :)
Hi Rachel. We have a Chinook Blaze King. It’s a good size for our yurt. We purchased the metal water box that sits on top at a antique shop. It was actually made for a little wood stove. We are not sure how it was actually used. Somehow a smaller pipe fit right in the middle of the box. Thanks for watching.
Thank for the video. Very helpful. Thinking of doing the same for for/with our oldest son. This would be perfect for him.
Great job enjoy it. You gave me some ideas
is it easy for thieves to break into the yurt?
Hello Zeljkamarson. Thankfully we live in a safe area. I think a thief could use a saw or axe to get in, but let’s not give them any ideas. 😉 Thanks for watching.
@@tntnaturecon ❤️
Hi! Love the video! I have the same ridgeline and 5x8. What's your mpg pulling the trailer and weight of the trailer?
I see you don't have the weight yet, at least the mpg while pulling the trailer. Thanks in advance! 😊
Hello. How cool that you have the same set-up, Richiemohabir4021. We still haven’t weighed our trailer yet but the mpg is about 17.5. How about yours?
@@tntnaturecon I get about 23 mpg in my 2017 with AWD. That's without the trailer. I just upgraded and have been slowly building out a 7 x 16 and bought a chevy avalanche to pull that. It gets 15 mpg, but with that trailer it gets about 8 or 9 😔 😥 . Even less in those Georgia mountains.. It's about 3000lbs TA.
Wish I could do something like that here in the Houston area. I would’ve had 2-3 heatstrokes before I even finished it.
Hello Houston. Stay cool and thanks for watching.
We live off-grid in the Cascades. We harvest about 10 cords of firewood each summer. There is a 4th way to get firewood: hire the local tweakers. Check out this years pile: ua-cam.com/users/shortsU58re5H-jMY?si=Wxapm84bMKOw6cKt
That’s a lot of firewood, CreggLund! 💪🏽💪🏽We will check out your link. No idea what a “tweaker” is. Thanks for watching!
@@tntnaturecon Tweakers are the drug addicts that live mostly in old RVs up here.
Knowing what you know now... do you think that's enough insulation... summer and winter ?
We don’t use the trailer in the winter, so that’s good. It doesn’t get too hot here in the summer, so enough for that season too. Thanks for watching, @imlivingthedream3942.
Thank you for posting this!
Great video. We found that propane tanks are fine to at least -40 (for a cook stove at least) with a good regulator and tanks outside. But we do see a bit of a drop in pressure below -20 so I can see the merit of insulating them too!
I've just found you. So beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Glad you found us, Audrey Burton. Thanks for your kind comment.
I noticed that you did not frame any of your openings. Are you concerned with them collapsing?
Hi, not really concerned about collapsing as metal wall seems to be strong enough to hold the window. We have used it for some time and it still has not collapsed yet :-)
I enjoyed very much seeing how calm and attentive your Husky (?) is. Letting a dog live in the environment that historically belongs to the breed must forestall anxiety and destructive tendencies. What a lucky creature!
Hi Lawman. Thanks for your comment. We think Tenshi is mostly Malamute which is a northern dog. She fits right in here in Yukon Canada where we have about 8 months of cold! She seems content and especially brightens up when it snows. We are so lucky to have her. 🤗🤗🐾🐾
Interesting video 👍 What country are you in? Is your husband an Eskimo? He looks like a native person. I would like to see more 😁👍
Hi there. We live in Yukon, Canada. It’s right next door to Alaska. My husband is from Japan but others have asked if he is Inuit (Eskimo). Thanks for watching, Phillip. We have quite a few more videos like this on our channel and hope to create more in the future.
@@tntnaturecon thanks for your reply.👍
Beautifully done✅️
You have your side window installed upside down. You have the drain holes at the top. I took the bar latches off of my doors. Anybody could come along and lock you in with no way for you to get out. I appreciate the build. Nice job
Hello @tacotime. Thanks so much for your helpful tips. We appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment.
Do these have to be inspected and approved for registration?
This is a very good question. It is not required where we live. Thanks for watching. 🙂
@@tntnaturecon that's good 👍😊
5x8 just what I was considering 👍
Love that you cook for your dog! Good humans. I am planning on living in a yurt, a smiling wood yurt, that is hard sided. The round space feels like a hug. Thanks for sharing and Namaste.
I checked out the Smiling Wood Yurt website- very cool. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinet construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.
why the lady doing all the work?
Haha. That’s a great question. 😂Tomohiro wants you to know, he’s working behind the camera. Thanks for watching rebokfleetfoot9473.
