Johannes Brahms, from Elf Choralvorspiele, composed in 1896 towards the end of the composer's life. Several of the chorales in the Opus 122 set concern the end of life, but this chorale is about beginnings, setting the ancient Advent hymn often translated into English as 'Lo, how a rose e'er blooming'.
