very nice wall, hoping to be able to visit it in the future...
hi! Do you happen to know what time the lanterns in the cemetery stay up till?
Hi! I think as long as it’s dark? I have been there around midnight and the are still up. :-)
@@travjournal awesome! Thank you! 😁
What was the date when you did the hike?
Hi! Sorry for the super late response, just got back from a hiatus! We made the hike in early December.
Beautiful day.
Very!
What month was your hike? Thanks😊
Hi! I hiked in April. :-)
I wanting to visit Higashiyama for the Yasaka Pagoda, Kiyomizu-dera and yasaka srhine in evening and Gion. Could they all be done in one arvo/evening? On your Day 1 what time did you start?
Hi! Yes, these areas can be done in one everning but Kiyomizu-dera closes at 5 or 6pm. The Yasakas are lit up in the evening, but many shops close early too. Gion is definitely happening in the evening, but there are now strict rules if you visit Hanamikoji - due to abusive and annoying tourists that cause disturbances and harassing maikos and geikos. Nice restos though on the other side of Gion.
I would love to know this too?
Yes, we visited Kyoto in early autumn. Kinkakuji is crowded as usual, but the other temples and shrines we visited are nice also and not as crowded. Highly recommend checking out Saga-Arashiyama and the banks of Katsura River. In downtown Kyoto, Kamogawa is also worth a stroll in the late afternoon.
Here is a thought about your little bear bag. i saw a piece of artwork about a Buddhist priest who attached bells to his walking staff, so that insects would hear him to get out of the way while he was walking. This emphasizes the importance of respecting the lives of other beings.
only at the second stamp, but has shaking your little bell become a signal of accomplishment? i can dig it!
I quite agree with this! I really love this Japanese or East Asian (?) concept of do no harm especially nature. However, the bell didn’t work for the “floating” insects, I think they still almost hit my face. 😂
I am planning to make a day trip to Shinhotaka Ropeway and Okuhida Bear Park, departure from Takayama Bus Station. If I buy return bus tickets can I drop off at these two stations and get on the next schedule bus again? Or I need to buy specific bus ticket for drop off these stations? By the way which month was your Shinhotaka Trip?
Hi, super apologies for the super late response. If this information still helps: we skipped the Okuhida Bear Park but the Takayama to Shinhotaka Ropeway is just one bus ride. If bus changes are needed, it would be either back in Takayama or Hirayu Onsen stop. If not, you can actually pay the bus tickets on the bus itself; so you can buy one bus ticket to Shinhotaka Ropeway, and going back, if it’s in the same line, the ticket to the next stop you can pay in cash. We made the trip to Shinhotaka Ropeway on 2nd week of December. :-)
Hello po! Thanks for the info regarding coin lockers there! I will be checking out of my Osaka hostel and will be bringing my luggage with me but I don’t want to bring it to the temple I’m staying at. You have excellent tips that I will make sure to use salamat!
If you’re in Osaka, there are cheaper luggage storage options just near Shin-Imamiya station. :-)
What time of year did you go? What was the weather like?
It was early April and half the time it was raining. It was still a fun and interesting hike! Wrapped up the Kumano Kodo with a perfectly fine day.
If you don’t mind, what days of the week and what month was this? Was it weekdays? Just trying to gage how busy it will be when we visit (I am not great in big crowds.) We are in Kyoto Thursday til Sunday, so will be trying to avoid busy places, will do the busier sightseeing early, or on the 2 weekdays we are there.
Nice❤
The best video about kyoto! Thank you
Apologies for the late reply but we very much appreciate your comment! Do check out our other videos as well. 🙏
Enjoyed watching your vlog! Well done! 😃👌❤
Great insight into travel in Central Japan, even if the cost effectiveness of JR Travel passes have changed so radically since March 2024. Did you have any problems with the size of your baggage on the Shinkansen? I understand that a bag bigger than 160cm in total dimensions causes a lot of heartache. Oh, and what was experience with the laundromat like? I'm big on using a laundromat every few days when travelling. I like to keep my luggage light but the contents clean
Hi, thanks for sharing. Did you visit Arashiyama during the weekend?😅
I am so grateful for your documentation of the journey especially you showing the signage, trail conditions, what to look for etc. Very helpful.🙏
So glad to have stumbled across your video. I am going in a few weeks and very thankful for the details that you have shown. Super helpful to know what to expect. Thank you!!!
great video. I am planning a trip to Japan late Sept. Just a few questions. Can you use the JR Kansai wide pass for the bus from Kii-Tanabe to Yunomine/Honggu and from Honggu to Shingu? Thank you
Thank you! for showing how to get from place to place exactly
Hi! Thanks for the great video. You mentioned that you traveled from Kyoto to the Osaka Airport. Can you let me know what is the fastest way to get there and how far in advance do you have to arrive with only carry on luggage?
Hi! To Kansai Airport, there is a direct train from Kyoto Station called Haruka Express. It makes a few stops along the way including stations in Osaka, but getting to the airport takes less than or around 1.5 hours. The train runs pretty much regularly, you just need to check the schedule. There shouldn’t be any issues with luggage.
@@travjournal awesome! Thank you so much
Hi, I really appreciate your video! I’m currently trying to decide if I want to join a group that planned this hike (the 6day version) right in the middle of rainy season. June 28-July 3. The idea of walking 6 days in constant rain doesn’t sound great. Would you do it again in the rain?
Hi! Sorry for the late response. I believe June in Japan can get pretty hot, so between a terribly hot day and a day with some drizzle, I prefer the latter. But do take note of rain intensity, there are always possibilities of mud slides, and walking in deep mud will not be pleasant at all. June is also usually the beginning of typhoon season in this part of the Pacific. Good thing that during my trip, it only rained for two days, and it was manageable. Let’s hope that you’ll have awesome weather during your trip!
*promosm* 🎉
In this clip which month are you Hike?😊 thanks ...😊
Hi! It was April. :-)
Yeah Thanks for information 🙏
Thank you for this original video guide through Kyooto, easy to fall in love with this paradise on Earth.

Hi I watched your kumano videos. Very nice ! Is it ok if you share the names of your accomodations in Takahara, Chikatsuyu, Hongu and Kii Katsuura? We plan to do Nakahechi trail in October.
Thank you for watching the Kumano Kodo videos! Good luck on your hike! These are the accommodations; each had their charms and I had amazing stays! Takahara - Hatago Masara Chikatsuyu - Happiness Chikatsuyu Hongu (Yunomine Onsen) - Ryokan Yunomineso Kii Katsuura - Hotel Sunrise Katsuura
Boiled tofu, who would have thought? But the soba and the grill looks interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Exactly, boiled tofu right!!!
Coffee and ice cream is so inviting, although I cannot have ice cream. I love chazuke; green tea poured over fried rice or simply cooked rice.😀
Chazuke is nice! In Nagoya, they eat unagi three ways and one of them is to pour tea into your rice bowl with unagi. Parang kape lang na hinahalo sa kanin, haha.
@@travjournal Japanese tea is so adaptable and goes very well in any food. Growing up I enjoyed coffee poured over fried rice.😀
THANK YOU!!!

That is a beautiful video keep up the good work why don't you show videos of cheap hotels that people can afford to stay in for 8 to 9 days 10 to 12 days people like myself who come to Japan to look for a new way of life and maybe possible to live in Japan so we need to find some place to stay that we can afford till we find a place to live😮😊😅😊
Thank you and thank you for your feedback! We would love to create videos of hotel stays and that’s on our next story development plans. We still have tons to do for our channel, subject-wise. In the meantime, please enjoy our other Japan videos, you can find helpful information especially our itinerary and hiking content. I haven’t tried buying multiple passes in one trip and under one name - keep in mind passports are required to claim passes. Maybe it’s possible for different pass types like the one in Ise and the Kansai Wide Pass. you can combine different passes and really make it work with your itinerary. I think traveling between Shingu and Kii-Katsuura is not expensive because there are local buses and trains, and the same goes for different towns in Wakayama. Just use the Kansai Wide pass when you leave Wakayama and then move on to Osaka and other farther destinations. I think you can enter the Kumano-Wakayama area from Nagoya; if that Ise pass also covers Wakayama coast, a possibility is go to Wakayama from Nagoya, explore the coast using this pass, start the Kumano Kodo in Kii-Tanabe and end in Shingu. And from Shingu use the Kansai Wide Pass to go straight to Osaka because that’s a long train ride via the Kuroshio train.
It makes more sense actually to go to Osaka from Nagoya and then osaka to Kii-Tanabe. But the Nagoya-Wakayama route is also possible; I actually thought about it when I saw in the Kii-Katsura station that there’s a train heading to Nagoya. I suppose that’s one less traveled route for many Kumano Kodo pilgrims!
The best video of Kyoto!!!!! Good information. Thank you
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it and found it helpful. We have a very recent Kyoto upload based on a recent trip, and it’s more of a chill vibe. Hope you’ll have the time to watch it, too!
Really enjoyed this video! nakasendo and shinhotaka ropeway looks fun....
Thank you! It was a pretty good itinerary, tbh!
I am now curious about beef sashimi and unagi.
Both delicious foods!
This is a chill video. Would love to visit Kyoto now. Thanks for making this!
You’re welcome, I’m glad you liked it! Please check out our other videos as well, there is also another Kyoto vlog on the channel that has at least 138,000 views!
Thank you so much for posting this, it’s been so helpful in planning similar route.May I ask if the buses in the areas accepted IC card? I plan on staying in onsen one day and taking boat down to shingu following morning. Do you think on one day boat to shingu -> shingu to ki Katsura - Taichi falls (from daimon zaka) and then back to shingu is possible ? I’m trying to see whether I should stay in shingu after taichi falls and leave next day to wakayama or if I have time to go Back to tanabe. (Basically in seeing on last day how far can I get back into civilization with Kyoto as destination ) Thank you again! Edit:I’m actually also using a wide pass since JR price hike on the JR pass. I remember JR pass I was able to insert into ticket machine and reserve tickets. It had a barcode. The wide pass does not have a barcode. I have not seen anyone show how to use it. How did you purchase tickets using wide pass?
Hi! Thank you for watching the video and and I’m glad that it’s helpful. If you have time, we would appreciate if you also check out our travel videos 🙏 Now on to your questions which I am glad to answer to the best of my experience and memory. 😁 For the JR Wide Kansai Pass, I purchased it online via Klook. You can reserve seats via ticket machines; I think I just inserted the ticket and followed instructions and I did this in Osaka. But based on my experience from travels before, there are some stations that allow seat reservations at the ticket counter; better to inquire about this in major or bigger stations. Otherwise, you can get seats in a non-reserved car. During my visit, the Kuroshio wasn’t full but because I used it while traveling on weekdays. I think I used cash for buses during the Kumano Kodo route. From Kii-Tanabe, you can buy the ticket to Takijiri at the Tanabe/Kumano Kodo Travel information center just beside the train station. It helps to have coins and cash especially in rural Japan. The travel center also has updated bus schedules so it’s best to get a copy. As for the boat going down to Shingu, better check the official Kumano Kodo or Tanabe City Tourism Bureau website because for that I think the boat is booked there. When I was preparing for my trip, the boat was available, then suddenly it was no longer, so I got refunded. It must be a seasonal or demand thing. It’s feasible to go back to Shingu from doing the Nachi Waterfalls. Keep in mind though that there are bus schedules from Nachi going back to Kii-Katsura and also the Nachi stations. Bus schedules are available at the Kii-Katsura bus station going to and from Nachi waterfalls. There are local trains and buses connecting Kii-Katsura and Nachi Stations to Shingu, so it shouldn’t be a problem. You can even use the Kuroshio if you have the JR Pass. I think Shingu is about 20 minutes away. I hope this helps, and I wish you happy travels! If you have more questions, just post it here. 🙂
@@travjournal Thank you for the info! yes i subscribed and saw the whole kumano kodo series, i will be checking out kyoto as well. Alot of travel channels focus on the pretty location aspects (which is nice) however i appreciate you recording important logistical things such as information centers and signs as well as the stations. Do you know if you are able to purchase multiple JR west wide passes? i have seen conflicting info on this online with a consensus leaning toward "so long as dates do not overlap". I plan on using one to enter the kyoto osaka area from nagoya and doing all my travelling there, activating a second one in the kumano kodo leg to get from shingu to ki katsura and then use it to visit the coastal cities in the area and out and away back to nagoya. There is also the Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Area Tourist Pass. Buying multiple passes and getting 10 days is still cheaper than 7 days JR whole Japan pass Thank you
Wow yummy food 🍲

Thank you so much for sharing your Kumano Kodo walking experience, and transport information particularly from Yunomine Onsen to Daimonzaka, it's does help me a lot on planning. . as we will be doing exactly the same route in mid April this year... hopefully no rain 😜

where did you stay in tsumago?
We stayed in a minshuku called Daikichi Inn. Charming and they serve great food!
is it fine to do the shinhotaka ropeway as a day trip from takayama or it would be too tiring?
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, a daytrip to Shinhotaka Ropeway from Takayama is very doable! I suggest leaving Takayama early and enjoy the facilities of the ropeway and the stations until the afternoon. But if you’re into onsens and ryokan stays, Hirayu and the Shinhotaka area are great options for an overnight.
Very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
