US eradication of Native American culture in spotlight
No one is sure how many Indigenous children died in the boarding school system in the United States that was established to erase their languages, cultures and religions. But after revelations of mass graves at Canadian Indigenous boarding schools, the US secretary of the interior has announced an investigation into the boarding school programme in the US.
For more than a century, tens of thousands of Native American children were shipped off to government-run and religiously affiliated boarding schools, called "hellish institutions" by at least one expert.
