The work of Michael Powell and Emerich Pressburger went largely ignored by mainstream cinema upon their releases. However, thanks to their enduring legacy and the efforts of esteemed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, their films have been rediscovered to the benefit of cinephiles everywhere.
In this episode, Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold have a substantive discussion about what makes this film tick, and just how much it may or may not work.
You'll learn a lot about classic films, film structure, and the reasons why Powell and Pressburger were so influential on the future of cinema, in the UK, the States, and beyond.

The Richmond Dispatch (10 July 1894) and the Record-Union (1 September 1894) printed an article on 'How British Sportsmen Hunt Crocodiles in India' where an ex-officer of the British Army was quoted as saying, 'We used to have a great sport in India going out after crocodiles with Hindu babies as bait'.

Now you know 0.01% history of british brutality in India. Movie is 95% truth. What they didn't show is he individually corrected the soldiers who were missing the shots and ordered them to shoot at the densest section of the crowd so that more people can get killed in less time and Bullets(Remember in RRR).

17:26 No not a watershed moment for Indian cinema. Truth be told very few people in India actually watched the film and it was released on OTT. I don't remember it having a theatrica release. Also regarding realism there have been plenty of movies in the past. When it comes to graphic violence a movie called the bandit queen from the 90s come to mind. It was based on the real life story of a bandit from an exploited llower caste who goes on to become a politician later. But you will mostly find such movies in the independent cinema circuit of India or the parallel cinema movement that started in the 1960s. But off late such movies have become more mainstream with the coming of digital platforms. The independent circuit still exists but it mostly caters towards the film festivals and dont get theateical releases but you can see some of it bleed into the mainstream commercial cinema of India as well. Specially in that regard Malayalam film industry of India have been making some real gems off late.

That's incredibly interesting, thank you for commenting. We have received so many comments from people telling us to watch this movie that we assumed out was more widely known and viewed. We'll watch Bandit Queen, it will be good to learn more about the independent Indian film circuit, those films tend to interest us more than mainstream cinema. Is there a name for this cinematic movement or is it generally referred to as Independent Indian cinema?

Also knowing the importance of the Golden Temple and bathing in it’s pond for Sikhs, that last scene of him washing away blood and grime in that water, and his face hardening from the innocence of youth to a mature determination was chef’s kiss.

It’s interesting to hear the difference in the perspective of someone who isn’t ‘in the know’ to this movie. I came in knowing the story (I live in Punjab, and have even visited the site of the massacre multiple times). I thought the movie would end with the assassination, but it happened within 15 minutes of the movie. So for me the time jumps kept the story we already knew interesting. I was not expecting the massacre scene. While it has been shown in movies before, but was never done such justice to before, because I guess technology hadn’t caught up yet to make the atrocities as realistic. So, knowing what caused the assassination at the back of my mind since the start, getting that scene in such depth felt justified to me. We didn’t feeling a sudden change of tone as we already knew the motivation of Sardar Udham. But I totally understand how both the jumping around and the sudden change in tone might have been jarring for you. I guess Shoojit Sarkar might have had this bias of knowing the story before as well

Thanks for the perspective! We appreciate you being able to see the film from multiple angles, including ours. It's an interesting study in how expectations and knowledge of subject matter affect filmmaking, both as a creator and as an audience. It was a very effective scene, undoubtedly, and we were grateful to be informed of this important atrocity in Indian history.

This assassination was not a normal incident... This happened in 1940 means middle of WW 2 so the germans catch this news n spread it across the europe like wildfire, the whole Europe knew about this incidents hope u noticed when a man said about this many international news paper published this event on their first page, n first time english got afraid of Indian because at that time almost every english has either indian or African slaves in their houses , who knows anyone can kill any english... Because udham singh also worked in his house before killing him, so just imagine the fear But english suppressed this news very well ,they completely wiped out this from their history....but we remember.... India(Bharat) remembers 🇮🇳

Loved the detail review you went in to on this movie and can relate to it. I was overall a fan and can understand the forced feeling of dance sequences. Im not sure where you are on your indian movie journey, but I am generally not a fan of indian movies as they are too dumbed down in my humble opinion and too much dancing. However, I do like ones with a message in them and so a fan of some of Amir Khan's movies - 3 Idots, Stars on Earth, Laal Sign Chaddha which is a copy of Forest Gump with an Indian twist and as a young man loved Laggan. As a kid loved Coolie with Amitabh Bachchan. Enjoy Happy to also give you my understanding of the cultural reasons behind some of the scenes with my Indian and English up bringing.

I actually like the third one as it shows a different side to Ogami Ittō. As for the whole tittie thing with the kid, I didn't see anything sexual about that its just a crazy lady, and Ogami Ittō knew what was going on with her, and he was being comforted Ogami is very insightful. As for the rest of the nudity yeah your right it's true of many Kazuo Koike comics women are treated like shit. Apparently, that was true to history. Everyone makes a big deal out of the kid being fed by a boob to that I go where you never breastfed who cares context is everything.

The thing with the execution of the child was his father the Daymio displeased the Shougan and thus he lost his vessel and his bloodline this was when Ogami Ittō was the executioner. If you pay attention the flashback scenes have almost no sound except for a few instances. Another thing to remember is that in the flashback Ogami Ittō shows emotion he sheds a tear throughout the rest of the series he is quite stoic.

I think that Yorgos likes to explore violence, control and exploitive sex because control is his drug. Through his films he controls everything and gets to take his controlling to extreme through his characters and watch his private joke be played out by actors who submit to his control and depictions of depravity under the premise that they are just doing their jobs. I don't for one minute think that Yorgos believes he is creating art or entertainment. I think he is getting off on control and contempt and having a big laugh at the actors who participate in it.

The film although is historical fiction the main protagonists are also based of Indian mythological characters Ram from Ramayana and Bheem from Mahabharath. Ram is a revered God and Bheem is known for his enormous physical abilities. In the climax fight these two characters become the mythological selves. Obviously the western audience don’t have this cultural background but bodes very well with the Indian audience. 1:21:45
