Canon AE 1 Program focus screen change (how to)
The canon AE-1 Program was unusual for a consumer camera as it had a range of interchangeable focus screens. Unfortunately, because the screen can come out people tend to remove them when perhaps they should not and there is some dubious advice online about “removing the screen to clean it”. In this video we look at how to change the screen type and what Canon actually recommended at the time of production.
Below is a list of screen types Canon originally offered.

    Thank you for the video! I think i found my dream plastic fantastic. Was unsure to decide between the beautiful Canon EOS 1000Fn and this one. The Nikkor 35-70 seems distort quite intensiveley however. Do you think the Canon 35-70 is better?

    • @mostlyvintagecameras4323
      @mostlyvintagecameras4323 2 дні тому

      Hello, THank you for your question and comments. To be frank I haven't experianced intense distortion with either lens. Both seem to me to be pretty good and certianly better than the latter 20-80mm style kit lenses. Which camera to go for? Just pick the one you like the look of is as good a way as any. Of all the entry level SLR cameras I felt hapiest with the Minolta 404si but thats just a personal preferance. You can find these so inexpensivly it would not cost too much to change your mind after the fact if you really wanted to. Have fun. All the best MVC

    Since it stores the photos you've taken in the roll, does thst mean i dont have to do anythkng before i take the film out after shooting all my photos? Is it just ready to go, or du i have to do anything to unload it?🥰

      Hello Kirajacobsen, Thank you for your comment. I'm not sure I follow your question however in normal oporation after the lat frame is shot there will be a short buzz of a motor and then you can open the film door and drop the film cassettee out. You will need to get it developed in order to see the photos of course but otherwise thats it. ALl the best MVC

    Hi, I always thought that SLR cameras metered through the lens [ I have a Tamron 28-105 lens ] but today I decided on a 400 ISO unknown Chinese B&W film of unknown expiry date, I set the ISO to 200 to compensate. With B&W I like to use appropriate filters, there was a Skylight filter fitted to the lens which I removed, I checked the shutter speed and aperture settings in the viewfinder, then fitted the red filter, strangely the readout did not change, I expected the aperture or shutter speed [ or both ] to reduce to compensate for the "filter factor" of the red filter, it did not. Am I missing something?? I have three 404si cameras [ they were dirt cheap ] and one of them has the viewfinder discolouration you mentioned, and like you I do not see any degregation in the picture quality, as for it affecting the auto focus I hadn't noticed any problem. Your review was excellent, like most people I hardly ever read a manual of any kind 🙃😜😎😵‍💫 cheers. Thanks for your time and effort.

    In a bout of film photography nostalgia, I recently bought an ME Super second hand and got it serviced. I have to disagree with you regarding the manual mode vs auto mode. My first camera in 1978 was a Pentax K1000 which is great, but is bigger, heavier and with a very basic match-needle exposure meter. You also had to continually take your eye away from the viewfinder to check what shutter speed you were using. I also find it difficult to use the ME Super auto mode with exposure compensation as it is impossible to know exactly how much compensation to use. I find it more aggro than manual mode! The ME Super also does not have an auto exposure lock function, so you cannot set your exposure and recompose. For instance in a scene with a lot of sky, in order not to underexpose the foreground, with an AE lock button, you could point the lens at the ground, set the exposure, lock it, and recompose. With the auto mode it would simply change the exposure again. The lack of an AE lock button is therefore an issue, but easily overcome in manual mode. Because of this I use it exclusively in manual mode. It is centre weighted metering, so I simply point the camera at the thing I want exposed correctly, set the exposure and then recompose. Yes, this will slow you down compared to auto, but because you also have to manually focus I find setting exposure doesn't really add much time and soon becomes second nature. Also, because the shutter speed is visible in the viewfinder, it is also a lot quicker and safer than the K1000 where it is all too easy to set a very slow shutter speed if you are turning the dial with your eye to the viewfinder. I also find when I am taking photos outdoors that the light does not really change that much from photo to photo, and that you can set the exposure manually and it will be good for a number of photos. I love this little camera and it is growing on me with every film I put through it!

    Just before I was to be given orders to Japan in the Navy my mother took me to purchase a nice camera. I was going to buy a Canon Rebel-G IIRCC and the people in line right ahead of us bought the last one in stock, so I was shown the Pentax ZX-10 and that's what I got. I've taken some excellent photos with the camera and eventually added a telephoto lens for it. I'm feeling like my dinosaur desire to not step up to a DSLR and stick to the 35mm film camera is waning since my last trip showed me my camera no longer wants to lock the lens to the body. I didn't get one shot off with it over a 3,500+ mile trip across 8 states in the US. DISAPPOINTED TO SAY THE LEAST.🥹 Compared to the Canon Rebel-G and Rebel-1 the real selling point to the Pentax for me is the fact that the autofocus is in the body and not in the lens as the Canon's are. So, take that as a good point as the Pentax lenses are less expensive due to that feature compared to the Canon offerings.

Had to spend an arm and a leg for a new battery as that was my 1 hope and it did the trick. I didnt think it was the battery at the time because obviously it was working and focusing ect but uppon changing it, everything works amazing and the cameras motors sound much much healthier :)

    Very helpful video, thank you. I bought one on eBay for £30 + postage and it came with new batteries. I didn’t remove them and I’ve had to replace them after 3 weeks having not even used the camera apart from testing the AF. My sense is that this camera drains batteries quite quickly, understandable as they have to power quite a lot of functions including of course the AF lens. I’m really looking forward to using the camera and this video has encouraged me to get out there and start shooting.
