How one song redefines Goodfellas

Few films have a soundtrack as iconic as Goodfellas. But there is one song in particular that takes the film to new heights and provides new meaning. The song in question is Layla, but why does the film only use the quieter 2nd half? Let's break it down. I don't watch many films, so my problem doesn't lie with them, but rather video games. I have played the first two games in the Danganronpa series. I adore this series and connect with it deeply, but due to it being so wacky, insane and a little "cringe" at times and can't bring myself to recommend it to any of my friends :(

    • @Andyatl2002
      @Andyatl2002 7 днів тому

      God I wish Danganronpa wasn’t so into anime tropes, like Mikan’s portrayal as a victim is so hard to swallow. Along with other ways this game treats its female cast. But I really enjoy how great the soundtrack is, a lot of the cases can be quite great and well written. The stupid stuff is sometimes funny (Leon’s case until the end and Mukuro Ikusaba to name a few) I think the best thing is to sell it as a flawed game with some really interesting moments. If your friends are already familiar with anime (enjoy it, can stomach it) then I think that they will enjoy the game if they also like mystery games.

      @@Andyatl2002 Thanks for responding. Yeah, I certainly have some friends who are into anime, so should be able to stomach the weird stuff. However, I don't know if they like mystery games. I suppose I should just get know them a little better if i am going to recommend anything. As for Danganronpa itself, it just frustrates me so much that one moment it best written plot twist I've ever read and then next moment, I don't know it's Teruteru having a Teruteru moment or something (fuck him btw). I still love it though, DR1 is a 9.9/10 and DR2 is a 9.5/10 in my opinion (I know lot people prefer DR2).

      @@JohnH100-ih3he, TeruTeru probably would have been so much more interesting if his main personality trait wasn’t harassing people repeatedly over his more interesting ones that get buried by this very damning character flaw. Danganronpa 1 is my favorite as well I think it has the darkest tone in the series and still manages to balance the humor D2 has my favorite case in all of the game mystery wise in case 5 genuinely so fun to play through and can make me more forgiving towards what I was putting up with for the great writing that was displayed there. I don’t know if you have played D3 but I do still recommend it because if nothing else it’s interesting to discuss the game.

      @@Andyatl2002 I agree with what said about Teruteru. a waste of a potentially good character. Also, I'm still crying from the fifth trial in DR2. As for DR3 I am definitely gonna play it eventually.

    I think a lot of it comes down to people considering their subjective opinion as fact. Often times the more accurate statement isn’t “this film sucks”, but rather “it wasn’t for me.” The most important part of recommending is - as you said - to consider your audience. People have different tastes, perspectives, backgrounds and beliefs. You can’t recommend the racy, controversial shit to the conservative pearl-clutching types.

    Michael had a unique education that made him a formidable boss: (1) his Ivy League education, (2) his military training, (3) his 2 years of hiding in Sicily, and (4) his apprenticeship with Vito. That time in Sicily gave him a deep understanding of the nuances of the mafia, something that made him more strategic than even Tom Hagan.

    My wife, when we first started dating thought of me as a "film snob" and to prove it she was going to pick out a dvd randomly from my collection, to confirm it was likely going to be " pretentious, long and boring, just like all artsy fartsie films" She picked a "A Clockwork Orange" by Kubrick. I think, more than anything, that the collection of vignettes this episode showed, really spun on the overarching theme of season two being 'Every second counts'. As Carmy stands there in the final shot, his new dishes in front of him all inspired by the scenes we've experienced throughout the episode - these dishes are his memories brought together, and the tone of the shots with him in the present makes it seem as if he's regretting not ever being present as Carmen the human, and instead always personifying that 'Fuck you, I'll show you' mentality that Carmen the chef brought in season 1. I especially loved that he subbed the blood orange dish, and when Syd did something similar with the risotto he berated her. He was becoming his boss at The French Laundry, and he realized that. That strange limbo in the pursuit of perfection, one mentor telling him to subtract, while another says to add 5 seconds to a sear, perfection contradicts itself in what he does, as food is inherently subjective and as such he’s been chasing something that doesn’t exist. Him photographing the dish he made for Noma also illustrates the point of him wanting to prove himself - But his brother who he sent it to had no idea what it was, as Carmen maybe never made the effort to explain what he had going on, it showed how out of sync with everyone he was, not to mention with himself. I understand why some people wouldn't receive this episode well. As someone who threw everything, and everyone away to pursue a dream myself, it resonated with me on such a deep level. When you finally stand at that pinnacle of your game, you realize that the only thing the work has amounted to is more work, there is never going to be a finish line no matter how hard you push, and that it's everything in between that actually matters - everything in between that you for years disregarded as not as important as your work. I absolutely adore this episode.

    I couldn’t disagree more. People are all different and what works for some one else may not work for another. Most people cannot understand that it isn’t fletcher’s fault some one else taking their life. Sean could have left fletcher’s program whenever. This is a genuinely weak point of view where this MAN, not boy, had no choice and was just ruthlessly abused at no choice of his own. Sad. Everyone is a victim in this comment section.
