The town of Ridgefield, Connecticut, launched their Pollinator Pathway with a panel of experts on pollinators and the issues surrounding them. Part 1 features Victor DeMasi, a lepidopterist (butterfly expert) from Redding, CT. He gives an introduction to butterflies including their life cycle, what they need to survive, the problems caused by invasive plants and other fascinating facts.
Blooming Boulevards is a great resource. It has helped me tremendously on my gardening journey
I tried the cardboard technique and it actually works. After string trimming the grass really short in early Spring, I held sheets of the cardboard down with logs or rocks and then covered it with some peat moss to help speed up the rotting process. Planted some fleabane, coneflowers, joe pye, & blanket flower plugs directly into the area after about a month. All plants survived and are doing great. Make sure your cardboard overlaps a few inches or weeds will sneak through.

Disappointed that any gardener would use even a drop of roundup. It kills the microorganisms in the soil.. and gets into the water table/water for humans… Also please understand that LIVE compost is the best. Compost tea can be added to compost to make it alive. Can I add some input and observations about Monarch caterpillars? I've raised them for many years, and without fail, all form chrysalises with their backs to the light. Why? And what's with that gold band on the chrysalis? Well, as the butterflies eclose from their chrysalises, they pivot quickly to face the Sun. They use that gold band as a foothold! Other chrysalises have warts, bumps or are configured so that the butterfly can contact the branch. But Danaus has a smooth surface to its pupa. They have evolved these gold ridges as a catch for their long claws.

I too came late to yesterday's picnic, but very much enjoyed catching up with Sam today! Many insights gained from this show-and-tell session. I hope to share these soon with my friends and fellow birders. It's so nice to see the bigger picture; thanks so much for offering this perspective.

Will using miracle grow seed starting mix soil with organic seeds introduce neonics into garden?
Perhaps not neonics...be sure to read the label, and research any additives/fertilizers, which are probably not necessary, especially for native plants.
