GM 3.8L 3800 Series II engine upper and lower intake manifold & valve cover gasket replacement
Переглядів 140 тис.8 років тому
This video shows the steps I did to replace the upper intake manifold (air plenum) on my 2001 Monte Carlo SS 3.8L 3800 Series II engine. The replacement was need due to material and gasket degradation of upper intake manifold resulting in coolant (anti-freeze) loss or leak near EGR valve stove pipe. During repair I also replaced the Lower intake gasket and valve cover gaskets. Here is a list of...

      if overheated, it may get warped and start causing coolant to pass through the EGR tube. coolant then may get into cylinders. In this video he used Dorman plenum, I prefer ATP brand for that part. They should be kind of equal in quality though, I guess.

    Very good vid. I know it's an old viid, but in case you or anyone else can use the info, I have a trick for easily filling the forks. I was a Honda tech for 15 years, did lots of fork jobs. I filled a measuring cup with the proper amount of fork fluid. Take the valve core out of the top of the forks. Hook a vacuum brake bleeder to the air valve. Remove the drain screw from the bottom of the fork. Get a length of rubber hose that will fit snug in the drain. Put the hose in the drain, put the other end in the cup of oil. Turn on the vacuum and it will suck all the oil up into the drain. Put the screw back in and turn off the vacuum. Install the valve core and you're done.

    My mechanic didnt quote me a new plenum..jus the gasket for the plenum and the lower intake gasket....for 1100! i thought i was getting a new updated plenum!!! This dont seem right?

      That sound like ripping off. The new plenum cost like 80 bucks. Why not include that in $1100??? It's not updated, just a new aftermarket one though.

      Doing this on my Matrix with same engine. Same here. I bought the car at auction, and didn’t notice it until I put nearly 300 miles on before I noticed it because road and wind noise is so loud compared to the engine. Who knows how long the previous owner drove with it this way. Fingers crossed, but I’m also more than prepared to rebuild the engine.

    You did not show how you put the plastic gauge on the journa, the put the cap back on and l then torque it. Then remove the cap again and then it would show what you are measuring? which should I guess the plastic part that stuck to the journal, is that right?

    • @B_-.-
      @B_-.- 8 місяців тому

      A rod can only knock a few times before it's no longer in able to maintain standard clearance. It's essentially impossible to react quick enough. So adding oil won't help. The only rod knocking that doesn't do permanent damage is the few knocks you can get when a car hasn't been started for weeks. Thicker oil will fill the bigger space but only for so long until it eventually wears and starts knocking again. It's a good idea though if you're unable to fix it immediately and need to keep driving - it may slightly limit the damage.

The other parts list in the description above are the parts I purchased to complete my job. You can google the other parts to see what the are, but mainly what you will need are the oil seals and O-rings list above and a Vesrah Top End Gasket Kit - GL1100 VG-595.
