Content here is always original and some of it is never-before-seen techniques, such as my 50 year old soldering trick which I thought everyone used as it made life so much easier - but years of trawling the web turned up no results for it. So I made a video and it has even amazed engineers with years of experience in soldering.

Using your ammeter to measure current can be a fiddly affair getting access to the cell's contacts. Here's an easy low cost (or no cost) solution. COIN CELLS : To measure coin cell current you can make a thinner blade by missing out the plastic piece and sticking the copper tapes back-to-back - but leaving one of the backing strips on for insulation. Only getting 50% of the mAh from your USB Power Bank? Here's why..
Переглядів 2,1 тис.8 місяців тому
My 10Ah power bank only supplied half of that capacity. Here's help to understand what the numbers mean. UPDATE - I repeated the test using a (USB stick sized) power meter and a 10 Ohm resistor. The result was 4.504Ah which is close to the original test of 4.516Ah, and the power bank stopped delivering power after 9 hours 29 minutes. Not sure how long this link to the USB tester will work www.a...
Andonstar wins : From simple magnifying glass to microscope - which is best? Well, it depends...
Переглядів 5059 місяців тому
Sometimes a simple magnifier is just not enough, so this video shows which I choose for various types of work. For the tiny things like SMD soldering, the digital microscope came out best, second place was my bench lamp/magnifier, third place was my smartphone. The Andonstar has the most room to work under, and is protected from the heat of my (de)soldering. The magnifiers I use are fairly gene...
Missing subject line? Edit almost ANYTHING in received emails, dates, subject. Move to other servers
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
This method is NOT illegal as it only edits emails you have received or sent. It does NOT hack into anyone else's email account. I often receive emails with missing or wrong subject lines. This video shows you how to put things right, and will then allow more sensible searches by subject. In researching for the video I tried to answer potential questions - what about dates, etc? but I don't rea...
A scratchy sounding speaker repaired at no cost! An unusual technique..

Instead of replacing a speaker that's gone a bit scratchy sounding - usually from being overworked at some time -you can attempt a repair for virtually no cost. I have used this method of speaker revival over a great many years and the results can outlast the electronics driving them.
PHANTOM POWER. A visual explanation of how some things can work even without a power connection!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
A power wire came of my Neopixel ring, and it still worked! It's not uncommon for a logic circuit board to power another via the data lines. Be warned! Here's a quick visual explanation of the phantom power effect. In the video, it was the GND wire that had become disconnected. However as it's almost always the positive supply that goes missing, I decided to describe the principle from that poi...

Can this cheap timer hardware be converted into a smart rotary control with built-in display?
Переглядів 3,9 тис.Рік тому
These cheap rotary timers have loads of goodies built-in: rotary encoder, push switch, battery compartment, piezo sounder, LCD or OLED display, and plenty of room for your own circuit board. This is an incredably cheap way of getting a quality enclosure. The uses are only limited by your imagination - hack and use for anything that can be controlled by a rotary encoder and a push-switch. You ca...

I´ve tryed it ... worked no so well. So I thought to use a A-bomb. Results were good but better with a H-Bomb. Finally I found my freedom with super heated plasma. ;-) No ... kidding ... I´ ve used two A-Bombs ...
Dude! Brilliant. I feel rather dull now for never thinking of this, but oh well, far better to learn and feel humble than to stay ignorant and proud, lol. Extra heartfelt thanks for not saying the dreaded modern UA-cam detestable phrases: "Hack" or "Without further ado", not dragging it out, not begging for likes and subscribes, and not having a wretchedly annoying soundtrack. Liked and Subscribed! Cheers :)
Thanks for the kind comments. I too dislike the things you mention, and simply stop watching! I am known to be terse (not always socially acceptable) and keep videos as short as possible by cutting and cutting until it's still useful without the bloat. I know people like tersness because this video has been veiwed over 26k times in less than 48 hours!
Reminds me of my airless fryer.
absolute gold of a video
Thanks! Coming soon will be solder/desoldering videos.
Did you just hot wire your USB?
Yeah, it’s now running at Lightning speed.
great idea, thank you
Thanks for the feedback.
Puff Daddy approves of your kinks!
Simple, but useful tip.
Thanks.
Each time I have cables that needs straightening I book a 5* vacation in Ecuador and use them to reserve the best lounger by the pool.
Clip both ends to document foldback clips and hang straight while warm till fully cool. Cable will remain straight.
Thanks.
You just know some people will try using their microwave! 🤣
😊😊😊
I've been using a heat gun for this, thought maybe hot water would work, but at least for recent Samsung mobiles if the USB socket gets at all damp the phone will refuse to charge via the socket. They do wireless charging, but the one time this 'got' me I was away from home; no wireless charger pads around. So a heat gun...
But the cable is clearly still a bit kink at the end. It's not factory straight
Thanks. I so wish that video was 23 years old or such and just reaching me now, I could have missed decades of doing the twist. I have a double, smooth edged, commando style knife engraved Made with Sheffield steel, it's been with me since the last millennium. I hope it is necessary to throw out each bowl of now tepid water and use freshly boiled from cold water for each straightening - attack the 2024 OCD global warming maniacs. Use solar energy.
Even better, keep the bends so that you fold it the same way next time.
Rubbing alcohol does the same thing, just wipe the cord with it. Or hear me out. just use the cord, and it will naturally straighten.
*Messy Spaghetti became Angel Hair. He forgot to drain, add sauce, meat and cheese* 🍝😂
I cooked half a pound of them and then added some tomatoe sauce! Delicious! If you like it hot take 12 volt ones.
A very effective way indeed !
Good idea. I prefer silicone cables without and kinks.
Thanks. From the comments it seems it also works on mains cables, which are rarely silicone.
Bloody good trick as I have many cables that have twists and turns.
This video inspired me to throw my gay brother in some hot water. He’s now straight, but has some skin burns - will the burn ointments unstraighten him?
😀
cool (hot) 👍
This is the way.
Thanks!
I used the friction of my hands to do it. Not as effective as the water technique you just showed us, and on long cables it starts to over heat your hand, but it's always available :)
10k views in 1 Day for a video less than a minute long, without any nonsense intro or pleas for Likes and Subscribers. Absolute respect to you! I have since tried this with my cables in my camera bag and it works a treat 😁
I'm glad to help! Thanks for the feedback.
Hot water is uniform heating at an even temperature - there is no better way than this
Great and useful video, thanks. The hot water works.
The same thing I did to my spagethi, except, I want my spagethi from straight to wringkle
Forbidden ramen
I had to look that up, a clever reference to noodles.
I shout at my cables, arrest them, put them on trial and jail them. That straightens them out.
"Tough love"
Thank you! Nice and useful short video! 👍🏻
What! No 10 minutes sponsorship? This must be a time travel video.
I expected some eejot saying spray them with WD40 and put them inthe freezer for two months, but no I was shocked and dimayed by pure common sense, damn you.
Hey, I got that timer. Maybe I could hack it! :-)
I did this and my cables turned out al dente. Please advise.
I for years used the hot water method but it is frankly messy. There is however a better method that does not involve water. You need a wooden board and you set your oven to 80 Celcius and just bake them for a few minures. You can also use this method to restore coiled cables. Remove any tangles wrap them tightly on a length of wooden dowel cable using cable ties to secure the ends, bake them in the oven for 10 minutes at 80 Celcius remove and leave to cool. Then take off the wooden dowel and your coild cable will be like new.
I work with a lot of network cables all coiling up. So, I have found putting them in the back of my car in the hot sun relaxes the coiling completely!
Very COoL (and steamy). I knew about doing this with "belts" but.. duh, I never thought about the CrAzY cables. That was the best ~58 seconds I've ever spent. And that includes my last 3rd date! Definitely a SUB-worthy video. I'm gong to try this on my Peyronie's condition . Wish me luck!
Handy tip, thanks for being straight to the point. 👍
Oh you boil them, of course, why didn't I think of that...
Use a flame torch, much faster.
That is such a gloriously elegant solution. Thank you! 🙂
This is sooo obvious...NOW THAT YOU HAVE SHOWN ME! Thanks for a short, to the point, useful video!
Nice; wife does this with new circular knitting needles too... Thanks! :)
You forgot to salt the water. Also: 30 seconds is for well done; if you prefer your USB cables al dente, take them out after 25. All jokes aside, pretty decent hack. Another hot water hack: rubber belts, e.g. the kind that help open/close CD/DVD trays, or used in tape recorder drive mechanisms. When they start to wear out and become too loose, they can often be brought back for a bit more use by tossing them into hot water for a bit. It shrinks them, so they don't slip anymore. The effect is temporary, but enough to bridge a couple of weeks/months, giving you time to source the proper replacement belts.
Let them be kinky. It's a free country.
It also works the other way around. You can use this method to make a coiled cable, just like the old telephone cables used to be. You just need to wrap the cable around a rod or something similar.
i've left them hanging in the sun, used the reflow gun, normal heat gun and for cleaning I prefer ISO to water. Cheers!
