Setting the Scene
Trying to decide what kind of project I want to do for the next 100 Day? 🪁 I've done three years in gouache -- so do I shift gears or go for a 4th!?
An interlude of painting to brighten your day. 🌞 This is a page from my 100 Day project where I painted every day in gouache in a watercolor moleskine journal. I always look forward to my art time -- a calming practice where I set up paints & paper. Here I'm toying with using a flat brush to create shapes that would blend together at the edges.

Painting the distance aka simple landscapes
Переглядів 173Місяць тому
Sending you sparkly sunshine! 🌝 In this little video I'm painting simple abstract landscapes & enjoying the weird artifacts and imperfections when working on paper that doesn't take paint very well! And yes, I usually work on good watercolor paper but it is fun to shake things up & mess about! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating the holiday. 💛 Remember to take {intentional} breaks, put o...
Painting Retro Abstract Terrains in Gouache
Переглядів 1762 місяці тому
A grid of a lot of different things painted all at once. No need to be cohesive if I know I'm going to cut something up for collage fodder! Some simple landscapes, plus testing a theory about generating interesting combinations by continuing lines across boxes. The bold graphical ones remind me of The Jetsons for some reason? There's no talking, just music. Wishing you a good day! gouache & wat...
Painting a faded grid on cheap paper w/jazz music

Enjoying the weird artifacts and imperfections that can happen when painting on non-watercolor paper watching with amusement as the paint puddles and runs wherever it wants to go. Found this paper in my stash; likely bristol or card stock. A quick process video, no narration, accompanied by calming jazz music. 🌝 Painting w/gouache using a #8 round watercolor brush. gouache & watercolor on card ...

Let's Play Twister Rev № 03: Experiments w/Layers & Mark-Making
Переглядів 1902 місяці тому
A quick one today layers upon layers as per usual 😋 not mapping out in advance what goes where. Each iteration winds up completely different. When working with watercolor & gouache a mask (i.e. tape, frisket) allows you to reserve light & bright areas so they shine through at the end. The variable I've changed in the Twister experiments is the shape of the masked areas on the very first layer. ...

Painting Triangles № 08/100

Here's a page from my 100 Day project where I painted every day in gouache. Each day I settle in with my journal and colorful palette of paints and make something. It can be anything a simple page a chaotic page whatever. The key is to put brush to paper. On a good day I will tape the grid for the next day's page in advance so that I can just sit down and paint without any start-up stuff. blogg...
Painting Small Abstracts
Переглядів 1823 місяці тому
Thought you might enjoy a relaxing painting session started by taping out a grid (sometimes I do these with taped grids for more crisp frames, sometimes with pencil lines only). Painted patches of color and added little boardwalks (could also be threads or bridges) to connect some areas as if they were waterways. Endlessly relaxing to paint. This video is at 2x real-time to give you a frame of ...
Art Journal Flip-Thru: 100 Days of Tiny Abstracts
Переглядів 2,6 тис.7 місяців тому
Hi everyone! I thought you might enjoy a flip-thru of the three 5x8" moleskine journals I filled for my first 100 Day Project. In this project/challenge you define your own goal so I set out to paint a grid of tiny abstracts every day. This flip is my first 100 Day in 2021... and I enjoyed this so much that I did a similar project again in 2023 and 2024. I haven't recorded flips for the other t...

I know that many of you want to make art more of a priority in your life to reboot/start/reinforce a consistent creative habit. Each year I facilitate a challenge to help you do just that! We start by making something small every day it can be as simple or complex as you wish and build consistency. Small project x every day = creative habit. Grab a stack of ordinary, paper, non-digital, analog,...
Painting Tiny Two Color Abstract Compositions
Переглядів 5117 місяців тому
Creating tiny compositions with just two colors. What do you see? Pixelated landscapes, a glass mosaic, a board game, fabric swatches, reflections in skyscraper windows? Maybe a box of gumdrops! Sometimes I paint a grid free-hand (as in the previous video) and sometimes I paint a grid which I've masked* with tape (as in this video). I like both methods for different reasons. They look & feel di...
Painting Doodle Shapes in a Grid with Gouache & Watercolor
Переглядів 1868 місяців тому
Echoes of the candyland game board, velvet & silk ribbons? A circus or county fair from a drone? Plastic inflatables at a summer pool party? A 3 minute speed-thru of a 2 hour drawing & painting session. So what's going on here? I had this idea of building a grid with colorful imaginary objects "behind" the lines. I think I met my goal of making a different graphic pattern in each individual cel...
Let's Play Twister Rev № 02: Experiments w/Layers & Mark-Making
Переглядів 3278 місяців тому
Another experimental page... a twist on twister! In this version I cut circles from tape and arranged as a random starting point. Those taped areas act as paint masks and they are like reserving brighter areas (the white of the watercolor paper) for later in the painting process. Painting a Quandary of Questionable Quadrilaterals
Переглядів 2629 місяців тому
So I was in the mood to paint triangles, and they turned into wonky quadrilaterals of the somewhat rhombus kind! {also, secret notes & quotes}. Diagonal lines add a dynamic element to your work - a sense of playful movement. Here I'm painting with the same brush throughout so that the lines are consistent. As always, painting is the goal, and the outcome is whatever it is. Blog post w/more deta...

Daisy Yellow Index-Card-a-Day Challenge 2023
Wonderful!! 😍🤩😍🤩😍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!!!
Do you let dry some layers before applying more opaque colors or just one shot?
This is all painted in one session, no breaks. The paint actually dries fairly quickly in thin layers. As I am painting, earlier colors are in the process of drying. So I can add more layers as I go.
Thank you, I'm so glad you keep posting on occasion you're art has always been an encouragement to me!
Robin, That's very sweet of you... 💓 it helps to know that!!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent with all of us. So kind and generous!! Also, can you please tell me what you used to do the first index card and background for this article/video. It’s the multicolored pastel one with no collage on it. Is it paints and if so , what colors did you use? Beautiful!!
Thank you! Not sure what index card you're referring to? The one in this video is collaged.
It’s the one thats the image behind the opening of this video. When the video first starts, it’s the background with the words, “making a grid” across it.
Hi Jonathan, that's actually a digital graphic I created (8 years ago)! Have a great day!
@ Oh, wow !! lol. Well, it’s s cool graphic!! Thanks so much for letting me know - appreciate it!!
this is realy zen, and everybody can do this....
That's very kind, thank you 😊
You had too much fun doing this! I love it 😊
Linda, So happy the 🩵 shines through!
Thanks for sharing your process with us Tammy. I enjoyed watching you fill these squares with yummy colors today.
I love that we're connecting all over the interwebs this week! Happy you enjoyed the video:) 🪩 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻
Nice to have rediscovered your channel, Tammy. I remember participating in your icad challenge back in 2014 on IG. I've been away from the art community since 2016 so it's nice to see a familiar artist. Aloha
Thank you Cindy! Glad you are back into doing art!
The graphic ones have a great mid-century vibe and I love it!
Oh so happy you see that too! Thank you Ellie! 😍
When taping the squares, how do you achieve boxes of the same size? I tried doing this yesterday by looking, then by attempting to measure. It came out ok and I will use it, but wondered how you do this!
Lenna, You're going to laugh --- but my taped grids are not measured, just guesstimated. They're usually irregular like some more rectangular than square. If I do want to measure something more precisely I have a clear ruler that makes it easier to measure the distance between lines while keeping them parallel etc.
@@DaisyYellowArt oh wow, your grid looked so good I thought you must have measured!!! I got thrown off because of the width of the tape. Now I know estimating IS the way to go. Thanks so much, i've really been enjoying your videos.
Love it!
Thank you kb! 😀😀😀
I loved watching this, great music!
Thank you Robin! 🩷🩷🩷
I am obsessed with the Twisters! ❤
Thank you Monica, happy to hear it!!!
LOVE!!!
Thank you Monica 🩷
Yummy page! I like how easy you make it look too! 💕
Thanks, Hanna! It will make great collage fodder, don't you think!?
Such a beautiful way to play.
I appreciate your kind words, Sharon! 🦋
Really love this!
Thank you Sharon! 💗
Awesome 👌
Thank you Pattie! 💛
These would make fantastic ceramic tiles - kitchen, bathroom, anywhere that needs a pop of colour! I'd definitely buy them!
That would be cool indeed -- at the blog I wrote about envisioning them as glass mosaic tiles! 🩷
Fabulous to watch your process! So many layers!
Thanks Thea! I appreciate your kind words!
What a wonderful work! 😍
Thank you! 🥰
❤ So yummy, all of the pages! Thanks for sharing the entire book pile!💕 Too bad the books are not holding together, that's always disappointing! 😥
The binding fell apart on one of the three journals as I was using it but the pages are still attached, fortunately. Hugs to you, Hanna!!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 this inspired me to go paint straight away, thank you Tammy! ❤ Btw. The turquoise blue you use is so pretty and I can never find that kind of color, now I think it's missing from my paint box entirely.
If I have sparked a desire to paint -- I think that is a very good thing. If it is the color that looks like of like teal? I am almost sure it is W&N cobalt turquoise light gouache (pigment code PG50) so hopefully you can find something like that!
I really enjoyed this video Tammy. The music went well with it and the captions were a great way to explain your process. The thin lines and dots of paint are my favorite!
Thank you Lenna! I love getting carried away in the tiny details. 💚
I'm totally inspired now. Thanks!
Yay! Happy you're inspired!
I love these mini abstracts…fun, colorful, quick and relaxing to paint. And wow it all looks so cool, both as individual blocks of art or altogether as one piece. Great idea, thanks so much for sharing 🙂!
Cindy, It's an engaging way to create -- thank you!
Honestly Tammy, you’ve saved my life! I’ve been in a creative slump for YEARS now. I decided to participate in icad2024 and now I’m having fun playing with my art supplies for hours every day now! I think it’s because I’m using inexpensive, non-precious art supplies, and just playing. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😁
Thank you Barbara 💚 I think the un-precious nature of the surface and the idea of play for the sake of play (whatever the end result) makes a difference. You're always so supportive and I'm happy that the challenge helped you get back into your art!!!
Is there somwhere to post what you have made and to see what others are up to?
Yes, for sure! We are posting at instagram, you can find a quick summary of how it works here: daisyyellowart.com/vividlife/icad-welcome (look for the TL;DR) and then follow the account dedicated to the challenge & index card art: @indexcardaday (previously I put all of the ICAD stuff under my account). You can see what's been posted under #dyicad2024 or in the tagged section on that account. And yes you're welcome to start any time!
Loved seeing the process of these little abstract paintings :)
Hope you have a lovely day! Thank you!
Loving the little abstract artworks! Very inspiring :)
Thank you for your kind words! It was a fun project!
What a lovely video. And It's so inspiring. 🥰
Thank you!
Amazing compositions!
Many thanks! 💙
Beautiful. Varied creations which I liked
Thank you 💛
I´m in...
So glad to see this starting up again…I have been away from my studio for tooooo long!
Glad you'll be joining the fun!
These are fabulous - love your use of color. And talk about tiny - were there 28 tiny squares on some of those pages? Wow. Which means you are making tiny marks - I'm not sure I can even think that small...
Thea, I was curious so I looked back and found some had like 40 -- it may be counterintuitive but the more I work in small format the more spacious the tiny squares feel. Thank you for your sweet comment!
Thanks Tammy, these are delightful. Are they all gouache/watercolor or are some of them done with your favorite inks?
Linda, these three journals are all gouache with a bit of watercolor. But no ink. That was the constraint I set for myself for the project. Thank you for your kind words!
These are lovely and whimsical, thank you for sharing.
What a sweet comment, thank you! 😊
Me again😁 do you have a video showing how you tape off the squares - and what kind of tape do you use please.
Hi Megan, I added a link to the materials in the description -- and if you go to this video ua-cam.com/video/purz44a1W2g/v-deo.html you can see the way the grid looks while I'm painting. I will be doing an online workshop later this year, here's the notification list: daisy-yellow.squarespace.com/creativity-form
@@DaisyYellowArt that’s great thank you. 😀
These are wonderful. What a fun variety. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Always a great project!
I'd like to follow and participate in this process. I have art journaled for years and never attempted ICAD. What is the best way to get the daily prompts?
Hi Gina I'll be posting the daily prompts (which are optional) one week at a time in these places: website: daisyyellowart.com instagram @gypsy999 and @indexcardaday More about how ICAD works at daisyyellowart.com/vividlife/icad-welcome
I always start this challenge but this year I’m DETERMINED to finish. 😊
Thank you Jennifer -- I bet you'll surprise yourself this year!
Love it!
Thank you!!! 💚💚💚
Fabulous ❤Just came over from your instagram and loving your UA-cam!! Might have a look at your old school blog as well 🤪☺️
Thank you Nathalie! I have been making more videos in the last several months but writing @ the blog is still my focus!
I’m excited to try this for the first time this year!
Just focus on a day at a time, you'll do great!
Love this challenge!
I hope this will open up your creative ideas as it has for me. Some prompts are challenging for me but I decide with each day to go with the challenge or morph it into something else more exciting to me. This way of practicing ideas using the elements of art is so much fun and takes me away from gettin ho-hum in my regular art practice opening up all kinds of creative possibilities.
Love this Tammy!!!!
Thank you Debbie! 💚
Fantastic exercise! I will try to share my take on this with you.
Becky, let me know how it goes -- the post over at the blog has more info if curious!
Love this idea. I do doodles in grids but don’t paint them like this. I’m ordered a round 6 brush and giving it a try! I need the brush practice. I always find you so inspiring - thank you for sharing
I find grids such an intriguing and inviting structure -- enjoy your #6 round ---> happy painting!
What an amazing idea...thank you
Caroline, Thank you for the kind words! I'm quite enamored with these experiments!
That would make the most fantastic tiled mural! I love the idea.
Ellie, What a cool way to look at it -- as tiles! Thank you!
