🍁How to Reach Byodoin Temple | Bus, Train, Taxi Guide + Autumn Special Tips
In this video, I'll show you the best ways to reach Byodoin Temple in Uji, Kyoto, using different transportation options:
By Train 🚆:
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Uji Station. It takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately 240 yen one way. From Uji Station, it’s a 13-minute walk to Byodoin Temple.
By Bus 🚌:
From Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Keihan Bus to Uji Bridge (Uji-bashi). The ride takes around 40 minutes and costs about 330 yen. From there, it’s a short 5-minute walk to the temple.
By Taxi 🚖:
A taxi from Kyoto Station to Byodoin Temple takes about 30 minutes, costing between 3,500 and 4,500 yen, depending on traffic.

The best time to visit Byodoin Temple is during mid to late November when the autumn foliage is at its peak. The vibrant red and orange leaves create a stunning backdrop against the temple’s famous Phoenix Hall, making it a must-visit spot in Kyoto.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Can I ask more about the bus ride to Katsuragawa River? Is it easy to find and board the moment you finished your train ride at Kameoka Torokko Station? I am also keen to take the train at 9.05am and the river boat ride at 10am. Is the ¥320 flat for adult and child? Is it cash only or able to use Suica card? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for your comment 😊 From my experience, after taking the Sagano Train, you can easily catch the bus to Katsuragawa (also known as Hozugawa River). The buses are frequent, so you won’t have to wait long. For the bus ticket, you can pay with cash or cards like Icoca and Suica. The fare is ¥320 for adults, and the child fare varies depending on age (you can check the details here: www2.city.kyoto.lg.jp/kotsu/webguide/en/fare/pop_fare_age.html#p2).
When I took the Sagano Train last year, I boarded at 9:00 am, arrived at Kameoka Torokko Station around 9:30, got on the bus, and reached the Hozugawa Boat check-in counter around 9:46. I then boarded the boat at 10:00 am. Just a heads up-the boat schedule depends on the water level. If it rains the day before, the next day's schedule may be delayed. So, it's a good idea to check your email or the website a day before your trip to confirm.

When are you planning to take the Sagano Train and riverboat ride? I recommend going between the last week of November and the first week of December. During that time, you'll see a lot of beautiful autumn foliage. Last year, I went on 14 November, and the leaves were still mostly green. Anyway, if you're visiting Kyoto in autumn, I highly recommend checking out Ryoanji Temple 😁. It's a beautiful spot, especially during that season.
