Cardiff 1960s
In the 1960s, Cardiff was undergoing significant transformation as it evolved from its industrial roots into a more modern and diverse city. The decade marked the decline of coal exports, which had once made Cardiff one of the world's busiest ports, leading to economic challenges but also new opportunities. The city's architecture began to reflect modernist trends, with developments in public housing and commercial spaces. Cardiff's cultural scene flourished, with the establishment of venues like the New Theatre and the Cardiff College of Music and Drama, which contributed to a growing appreciation for the arts. Socially, Cardiff was becoming more multicultural, with an increasing presence of diverse communities, particularly in neighborhoods like Tiger Bay, which enriched the city's cultural fabric. The 1960s laid the foundation for Cardiff's transition into the vibrant and dynamic capital city it is today.

Deindustrialisation in Britain began in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly from the 1970s onwards. Once known as "the workshop of the world," Britain saw its industrial base erode due to a combination of factors, including increased global competition, technological changes, and shifts in economic policy favoring services over manufacturing. Traditional industries such as coal mi...

Britain in the 1950s was a nation recovering from the ravages of World War II. The decade saw the beginning of the welfare state, with the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. Rationing, a legacy of wartime, persisted until 1954, influencing everyday life. The monarchy, epitomized by the young Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, provided a sense of continuity and tradition...

The lost pubs of London
Переглядів 1917 місяців тому
In the last 40 years, London has witnessed a significant decline in the number of pubs. This trend is driven by various factors, including changing social habits, rising property prices, and stricter regulations. The smoking ban implemented in 2007, along with increased alcohol duties, has also contributed to a decrease in pub patronage. Many traditional pubs have been forced to close or transf...

During the 1980s, Birmingham, the United Kingdom's second-largest city, faced a period of significant transformation and challenge. This era was marked by industrial decline, particularly in manufacturing sectors that had once been the city's economic backbone. The loss of traditional industries led to high unemployment rates and social tensions, culminating in the Handsworth riots of 1985, whi...

I WAS BORN 1958 grew up in 60s London. we were very poor, but as a kid, all I was concerned about was rushing home from school to watch batman and robin on Telly playing in the street till dark go karting anyone remember penny for the guy and sat morning picture's? hearing my dad or mum screaming at me to get in, I had school next morning. I had a happy childhood with wonderful parents.

I suppose there were still a few cobbled streets in the home country. Not so many though: in the earlier part of the decade a few deliveries were still being made by horse-drawn vehicles. Not many though

Born into the Liverpool dockland slums in 1950, I loved my childhood. I guess the close community created by the common poverty, meant people needed to rely on family & neighbours thus creating close ties and a strong sense of 'community'. The other reality is that we kids knew nothing of the outside world beyond our immediate streets, which were all we knew. How we treated each other, the values we lived our daily lives by and the sense of togetherness did inject into us kids life values & morals, a sense of self pride and a strong sense of this is my world, these are my people and I'm part of them, did make me feel, happy, a sense of belinging and feeling safe. Kids in 2025 wouldn't have a clue about any such things! Glad I was born there :)

Although for many we had to age to realize nostalgically although times weren't always the best of times for so many looking back and reflecting, we appreciate more and more these were "the good old days!"

Because it was what we were born into, we didn't think that times were hard - we accepted that it was the way it was and made the best of it. There was a shortage of many things that people nowadays take for granted, but we enjoyed a sense of neighbourliness, social cohesion and common purpose that is long gone and will never return.

Apart from just 2 photos that could possibly be equated to the South East, the rest were from Northern Britain. As for stating Britain was threadbare, bombed out and exhausted that is utter BS. I was there, I lived in that environment and I remember it being vibrant, exiting and full of hope - we "never had it so good".

I was born in 55 , and growing up then was the best, we could play outside in the streets, no car's racing up the roads, the front door and back door were left open no worries, no migrants, I had the best life then, and now I just worry for my children grandchildren and great grandchildren what are they going to do , all the houses and jobs will go to the migrants, Enoch Powell was damaged right ❤

The comments on here are loathsome, racist, xenophobic and disgusting. Unless like my family, people were wealthy, then 1950's Britain was pretty awful. It was still under rationing, housing for the masses was mostly appalling and life expectancy 15yrs less. I've never had time for the uneducated working classes and when one sees such comments, it's of little surprise.

Without any shadow of doubt, we born just after the war, have enjoyed the best period this country is ever going to experience. Stable, peaceful lawful and tolerant. Today is unrecognisable and I feel so sorry for today''s youngsters. I simply don't understand why the open door advocates are so willing to throw their descendants to the wolves !

I was born in 1950, and although I lived in a comfortable home, I remember the drabness, the greyness. My Dad was a keen Sunderland football supporter, and I remember going to football matches with him, when they played away, Stoke City, Manchester United , Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, I remember the blackened buildings, the bottle kilns in the Potteries, the bomb sites, but I always felt safe. Today I rarely feel safe on the streets. Britain is becoming drab and dirty once again, but also dangerous.

Was the Cozy Cafe in Cheshire St? My dad owned Chartway, a furniture frame makers factory just opposite under the brick arch and backing onto the railway. Certainly a feature between the late 50s and late 70s when they moved to Waltham Abbey. I think it's all been renovated since. There were tenement slums above my dad's factory. His factory was in a yard behind the tenaments.
