Avoid Halloween.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. 'But Halloween is just harmless fun!' or 'It’s just about costumes and candy!' I get it. I used to think the same way too. But as I started digging into the history, the origins, and even some of the spiritual implications, I realized there’s a bit more to the story. So, stick around. We're going to explore this topic together

2:04 - The Spiritual Implications
3:17 - The Christian Perspective on Life and Death

I’m glad to see a video that finally goes over this. I see so many Christian’s celebrating Halloween. As Christians it is important we understand what Halloween truly is, and why it isn’t a good holiday. You have made some excellent points in this video.

Completely contrary to what many would have one believe, Halloween is _not_ a holiday that has close ties to the ancient past, nor does it have some ‘pagan’ antecedent, nor is it a continuation of several ancient pre-Christian customs. To say Halloween’s connections to ancient Samhain (that’s SAH-wen, btw), or anything “ancient” for that matter, are, at best, extremely tenuous, would be grossly overstating the facts. Virtually all of the customs associated with the modern secular celebration of Halloween developed only in the past 500 years and have no connections to ancient pagan religious practices. What is definitively known about Samhain would fit on about a page and a half of paper. What gets passed around the Internet as “history” and “fact” is mostly speculation and utter nonsense. In short, Halloween just does not have the “pagan precedent” so many people seem to desperately want it to. Even the concept of ‘Trick or Treat’ is a relatively new phenomenon, originating from right here in the USA from about the 1920’s or so, and represents a mix of cultures, capitalism, and accommodation. As one commenter puts it - “This smear campaign against Halloween, in which it has been scapegoated among Christians as the ultimate manifestation of secularism and satanism in contemporary culture, only goes back to fairly recent modern times when certain Christian groups resorted to any fanciful tale to counter the emerging counterculture of the 60's and 70's that they perceived as corrupting youth. Christian leaders since then have clutched us in a guilt trip ever since about a holiday which, prior to this extreme reaction, was indeed harmless for the most part like any other holiday and had no connection with satanic rituals. It was a cultural festival which, though mischievous at times, really posed no threat to society until we were forced to believe that it did.”

This phenomenon is a really interesting one, and is summed up in a pair of quotes by Civilization IV designers Soren Johnson and Sid Meier, who said, respectively: ”given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game,” and that, therefore, “one of the responsibilities of designers is to protect the player from themselves.” Your life isn't a spreadsheet! If you make it into one you're going to optimise the fun out of life. If you find note taking apps useful then use one. If you're only doing it because you feel you have to do for some esoteric "productivity gains" then don't bother

7:03, that insane arcane technology is called synchronization, and you can set in up in obsidian with "obsidian sync" or manually with "syncthing". Also, apple software/hardware is all proprietary and syncs to their servers, so your notes there are not truly private. I am saying "not truly private" in the sense that apple can access all your data whenever they want and it could end up on the internet if there is a data breach (which is rare with apple, but i like true privacy more). The true endgame is most likely self-hosting syncthing with obsidian loaded with a few plugins. It's definitely not apple notes, that's for sure.

This is a personality trait. If you get a 3D printer, you’ll only print upgrades for your 3D printer. If you get into exercise, you’ll spend all your time researching different routines and exercises / programs. Freedom comes from learning to recognise “I am learning about this because I enjoy learning” vs “I actually need to do this”. Both are fine, but don’t do the first one when you actually need to do something - just do that thing. Learn about it afterwords for fun when you have free time. Also, make sure to actually rest sometimes. ADHD burnout is rough.

Yep, with my ADHD, squeezing out every bit of efficiency went out the window ages ago. I quite literally just go with the flow, listen to my body and mind, and get more done than ever before. Not forcing myself to do stuff when I’m already at my limit (which changes every single day) means I can just try again later instead of maybe getting that done but then needing 4x more time to recover.

I’m 50. I started with a physical notebook 📒 that also had a calendar. Then I used Apple notes. Then I tried everything from here to the moon 🌕 to make it fit my needs 100 percent. Now I’m back to Apple notes. The trap most people and companies fall into is chasing the perfect software tool. It doesn’t exist snd never will. Even a physical notebook 📓 has some great advantages compared to software. No software can give you such a good overview of all your notes 🗒️ by just flipping the pages.
