A curiousity. The mannequin displayed behind the reja in the castle- "this gentleman"- is unlikely to represent Sir James, Lord of Douglas. What or who it is intended to represent is less clear. The figure's black cloak bears the emblem of the military Order of Calatrava, founded in Castile in the C12th but the soldier-monks of Castilla wore white robes, not black. As curiously, knights of Calatrava do not figure prominently in accounts of the Teba campaign. Sir James Douglas, according to the poet John Barbour, had come to be known as "blak Douglas" in the north country of England, not because of black clothing but because of his dark colouring and his ruthless raiding across the border, feared as any "fell devill of hell." Black was the traditional colour of the Devil. In fact, Douglas' coat of arms, borne on surcoat and shield, was also predominantly 'argent' or white, topped with a blue band displaying three white 'mullets'- star-like emblems representing the spiked 'rowels' of a knight's spurs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Calatrava

The story of Sir James Douglas' expedition to Spain doesnt have aconnection with Mel Gibson's fillum 'Braveheart' except that Robert Bruce features in both. The belief that the movie's title derived from the Douglas mission is a modern myth. The notion that there were former 'knights Templar' (aging bankers who had seen no action since 1291) in Douglas' company is another C21st myth without historical basis. The food looks nice

Very interesting bit of history, unknown till now given the emphasis on this building in Irish lore. Only comment I'd make is re the editing, didn't you notice images are reversed so that all text is back to front! Being from Dublin it was odd seeing you walk down streets with shops on opposite sides, that plus the prescient comment at 06.20 re 90% of people there not being Irish at all..

I thought I knew all there is to know about my history but I had never heard of this amazing story. If true, we should absolutely celebrate their memory and their selfless contribution to the birth of our nation. The romantic in me really wants this to be true.

I truly enjoyed your video. I love hearing the history of the rebellion and I didn't know about the Swede and the Finn. Their story deserves to be told and their names should be on a plaque. It was great to see Henry Street and Moore Street. When I was a child I loved shopping in Henry Street and Moore Street. My dad is a Dub, but we lived in Scotland and we came home to Dublin twice a year. Too many changes and not all for the better. The government have to get a grip on the lawlessness that we are seeing. ☘
