Making Basic Target Arrows (Modern tooling)
This entry in the Working hands series, takes you along for the process of making a set of very basic target arrows. They are made out of 5/16" Spruce shafts, with field-piles, and turkey fletching.
As with all working hands videos, no talking no teaching. This is a video meant to show a slice of life in the workshop of a modern day Fletcher.

Working down footed arrows

A short video of the process of working a footed arrow back down to a round after glueing on the footing itself. Note this is not a "How to". Simply a slice of life in working as a fletcher. There are no instructions or talking. Only a pair of working hands doing their job. I hope you enjoy, and can relax watching someone else work. Shooting a Hunting arrow with 55# bow
Переглядів 2503 роки тому
This arrow was made in its entirety at an event in the historical site of Domkirkeodden in Hamar Norway. It has a cutting Hunting head with a long neck and a tang. the shaft is hand-planed pine, fletchings from Goose. and the thread used for the whipping spun by one of the spinners on site. And of course, we had to test shoot it once it was done. We managed to get some nice clips from it.

It does generate a “little” and when making many it is important to take regular breaks, otherwise the thermal extension actually messes with the final shaft dimensions…

    • @zapa1pnt

Because, the material he started with was 1/2" thick and he had to cut it square, to properly clamp it in the 4 jaw chuck on his lathe. Also, cutting the 1/2" material in 3/8" strips, then making a second cut, to square them to 3/8", is both time consuming and dangerous.

So a couple of things here. 1. This process is no good for branches, I might make one on how I treat branches at some point. 2. Regardless of what wood you use, it needs to be seasoned and dry for it to be processeable with power tools. 3. Osage is a great bow wood, not a good arrow wood. So if you have access to decent Osage I’d rather make a bow out of it.

These shafts are spruce. They come from the square as they are sawn from reclaimed planks. And as has been pointed out sawing is hard to do in a round. However you can cork out of split shafts or saplings. Might do a video on it when spring comes around.
