Tool is an excellent way to show that the bassist HAS to have a good understanding of what the drums are doing. This riff is easy to pick up _(mentally at least)_ if you lock onto the right foot holding that 5/8 pattern and the left holding the downbeats in 3. The jumpy notes are JUST the snare accents, the root more is JUST the kick drum, and the tempo is JUST the hats.

JC doesnt play especially fast, or with that many notes, but his rhythm is so complex and syncopated, and that is where the insanity lies. Love tool.

"actually in" is so irrelevant when talking polymeters. You're arbitrarily choosing one theme over another. One theme is in 5, the other 3. 6 is built of 3s. Time signature denominators are equally pointless a lot of the time. From a theory perspective though, you're "right". Ultimately everything is built on top of 1, and that's the universe :).

An older corvette standard (pro before rockbass became a warwick not a rockbass by warwick) would greatly improve your tone for a decent price. I got the ovankol neck swamp ash body swapped out some Bart Js.
