    Before I even watch the video ill say the only way to determine the power level of your deck is to simply play. You already want your deck to go off consistently (not win but have a shot at it) and you can't measure that consistancy if you don't play it. I have a Jodah deck. It was fairly consistent until invested into the land base. Now it stops regularly.

      @Azoreign 5 днів тому

      Well, I don't think you can base the power level solely around who the commander is. Lord Xander has alot going on with his card but he is expensive mana wise. It will all depend what you surround Xander with. Do you have fast mana artifacts, rituals, and treasure makers to get Xanader out as fast as possible? Do you have counterspells to protect him? Do you have sac outlets and reanimation to make use of his effects multiple times? Do you have a deck list?

    Regarding whether cEDH should have its own ban list: you used an example of there not being 2 modern banlists. Yes this is true, but that is because there is no casual modern. It (and every other format) is inherently competitive due to it being a 1v1 format. Commander is a 4 player game. There should be separate banlists since they are 2 distinct formats.

    • @Azoreign
      @Azoreign 5 днів тому

      Well, they are not 2 different formats. Its one format played 2 different ways. I can see this being a pretty solid course of action. There has been talks of tEDH (tournament) cEDH (competitive at your lgs) and CEDH (Casual with your friends).

    The issue I find is the banning committees logic. Let’s take dockside aside for a moment, I’ll come back to it later. The mana rocks, we can debate power to sol ring, but the fact of the matter is their logic is irrelevant in comparison. Factually, it is the same level fast expansion that they are stating a hard drive against. The rules committee didn’t even have a conclusive decision upon them, NOR did they consult the Advisory committee for it. If you don’t use your advisors, why are they there? Now then, rapid firing 3 HARD bans on manabase. Why was this a decision? When has banning all the meta relevant pieces been necessary? In all other formats, we see them tackling individual singular cards of the meta to shift it, look at pioneers banning of Sorin. Izzet phoenix isn’t the only man in the ring after his competitors are gone now is he? It’s a vibrant and full meta once more. Price, isn’t supposed to be a factor (this is THE format known for its acceptance of proxies). Now the whole tagline on forewarnings… the rules committee cant justify themselves here, after literally forewarning nadu… no further comment, they shot themselves in the foot. Now WoTC themselves bare a hard blame for creating these in the first place, but for the rules committee to handle this banning, so, poorly. Dockside’s description even hurts me, stating a 2 mana card being so vital, yet where would grixis turbo be without a certain thoracle? Maybe personal bias there, I accept it, and I would agree dockside was worse for the format, but their justification is just, bad, plain and simple. Back to the two rocks, banning and taking out cards is supposed to be a last resort, because eliminating pieces, removes choices for creation. Mana crypt and jeweled lotus were lost to whatever hate lashing the rules committee has with WoTC. And we as creative minds within the foremat bare the burden. I will not endorse any of the radical reaction to the banning, but the rules committee has indeed wronged the community, and their own advisors. They have lost one. They should of been more than aware given the value behind these cards, that although isnt a concideration for should it be banned, does have weight in the community, and they chose openly to put themselves on blast, with some harsh backwards logic, and a refusal to accept the blame, past “haha okay we coulda done better oh well, yall are monsters tho.” The whole discussion on WHY are card is banned, and inappropriate reactions is two different matters. They have hurt the faith of a great portion of this beloved community, and I hope, that in due time they will show it trulyisnt a sign of future, irrationalize logic, that blatantly spits in its own face. And before anyone says so, no, I do not own any of these cards, save for nadu, whom I purchased intending to make a commander out of, but lost interest in along the way. I feel bad for all the discouraged new players that came into the format, just to get hurt financially, or disheartened after pulling on of their first great chases, just to be told its banned now, even being such a small piece. While this could still pan out to be good for the format in the long run, and I’m hoping it does, it has hurt the community harshly in the present, and that is not debatable.

    I honestly have no issue with the bans. I own dockside and while yes, it made my mr.house deck better when it hit, it wasnt key to winning. Too many decks relied on ALL of these mana sources to be "competitive", especially the "competitive casual" which are nothing more than casual decks with a few high power cards for mana curving. The only people i see who are mad at these bans are investors, scalpers, and people who used these cards as crutches rather than make good decks

    Just done watching and thanks for your take. IMHO, it does not make sense to ban cards for casual EDH when you could just Rule 0 them out in your playgroup. I mainly play cEDH and a little bit of casual. I do not play fast mana except for the occasional Sol Ring when I’m playing casual, and definitely no Dockside. If it’s a game at an LGS with randos, Rule 0 can and should still take place, since the “Gathering” aspect is emphasized in EDH. And I have powered down my casual deck (with none of those banned cards) to allow for more even play at LGSes too. I can see how this ban could spark creativity in deck building, but it also hampers those who do enjoy playing these powerful cards or playing certain commanders in cEDH that are unplayable without Jeweled Lotus. Matt Sperling had something insightful to share about how these cards should’ve been handled. Essentially, rather than banning them outright, having these cards in your deck will make your deck of a certain power level. This will allow for better games and communication. Also, depending on the group, Docksides doesn’t automatically wins games. I know how it can and usually does. But that is a problem of power level disparity. Also, I have a cPDH deck that was able to hold its own against other cEDH decks (not the meta decks at that time). I think this ban does not solve the inherent issues within EDH and ended up creating more noise and problems for itself. What is needed is clearer deck building philosophy and better pod composition. I was against cEDH being separate from EDH, but now I’m unsure. While Modern and Pioneer and Standard and Vintage are “different formats”, they are similar in the sense that they are 60-card 1v1 formats. So several 100-card singleton multiplayer formats can certainly exist. The question is, how can that happen legitimately. Just some thoughts. Thanks for the vid.

    Toggo make many rocks, I give all rocks to tiny 1/1 goblin balloon brigade, block incoming attack with balloon brigade, trigger 16 rocks on death. Know full well that my opponent will counter, re-equip rocks to another goblin, rinse and repeat until one of us runs out mana. You never win but you can bring a bag of your favorite rocks to use as tokens, you need no other reason to play goblins .

    I mainly build 5-6 power level decks. Most due to budget constraints. I routinely play in pods with decks that half the cards have a higher monetary value than my entire deck. I am punching up every game, and fighting an uphill battle every game. To put it simply, I’m bringing a knife to a gunfight every commander night. If winning on occasion is important for you to enjoy the game, take sure to have conversations about power level.

The pod I was with are the epitome of arms race and the games felt, genuinely boring. I stuck it out for them. Magic is old and the land/mana base system is...bad. I have sold most of my collection and am enjoying other games and table top much more than magic ever could. Hasbro is truly unlikeable too. I'm happy to see others have fun with it and I lightly keep up with the blocks and cards at a distance.

Fixing this issue was key in moving forward with everyone in the group building on a similar level.

    Okay, first off, we all can mostly agree that rating Power Levels is mostly arbitray and very inaccurate. However, it is not entirely useless, as it does help explain your deck's power to the group, as long as they all have similar mindsets. Very rare that. I've also been saying this for a while now, but many content creators consistently categorize Precons much lower than they should. For quite a few years, Preconstructed decks have been incredibly strong. Not consistently, of course, as so many HUNDREDS are churned out by Wizards every year. This is due to the nature of the Legacy format, where all cards are legal minus only a few for specific reasons. In order to get players to play a different Merfolk Commander, they had to eventually print a more powerful one. Power Creep is built into the game. Wizards want a new player to be able to buy a ~$50 deck and sit down and play with the average pod of players. And since the average pod keeps getting stronger, so, too, do the precons, on average. Maybe its simply that my card shop just enjoys a casual power level game, but precons almost always have a significant impact on the game, even winning a decent amount of games. I believe this inconsistency by creators is simply due to the fact that most seem to build decks near the very top of that Casual threshold, bordering on cEDH. As an example, have you ever played against the Urza deck from Brother's War? That Commander slaps.

Now after years of upgrading it and getting to know the lines it's at least a 7 possibly an 8. We just started putting up boundaries in our table, because we play online (we started to live far apart like 2-3 years ago) and it started as a way to play our decks long distance or to try precons. Then we started building new things as to try before spending money building the things (MtG is kinda expensive in South America), but then someone just got to Game Night with a 2200+ bucks Emmara deck that they didn't even built themselves. We laugh about it now, but that was the point where we had to have a conversation.

    This was a well put together video. I have started viewing commander decks within 3 tiers recently: Casual (still drawing cards and making a board state but little to no combos or tutors) Trash Magic (Hyper optimized casual lists, lots of interaction, anything goes, combos tutors etc) CEDH (CEDH is effectively its own format with the amount of fast mana, combos, and interaction that happens within the format, saying these are a "9 or 10" on the scale tends to let more casual players mistake decks that are "trash magic" for CEDH decks when really they are just a little faster and have a higher density of interaction and win conditions)

    this is probably the first source I've ever seen that made it sound like being begged a solid 7-8 is where you want to actually be in terms of power level

    It's about a 7. _/Plays an island into a Sol Ring, casts Mana Crypt. Plays The One Ring._ I don't know. Maybe a 7.5?

      This does NOT sound like a 7.5!

    I love playing underdog commanders in CEDH, and still winning with weird cards that no one sees in CEDH. Playing from 5-6-7-8 is always hard, because there is always one dude that says 5 and he playing 8.

    According to spell table 1-5 don't exist. 6 is precon and everybody is an 8

    Sometimes my group will refuse to play a board wipe, if it’ll simply king make someone or if it wouldn’t speed the game up in any way.

    I ran the card though a website for my power level it's a 9 but it has 10-15win cons that can turn on a dime and play into one an another. But don't be that weenie at the table who days double strike hits before first strike I had a person day that the table agreed and I scooped since that was just pure bs

    my group doesnt play in a LGS cuse we play with bans. we figure the higher the powerlevels match up better then lower... however it is hard to bring in new players too our table... we have had a myraid of players from timid to cocky join us on a game night and never return. We try and warn people "our table is a hard table to win on" or we tell them anything goes except UN cards.. but regardless very very few people heed our warnings.

    I’m gonna play an upgraded Bello, Bard of the Brambles deck. I feel like it’s just the right mix of jank and power to be fun but also able to close games. I also like how it’s gameplan is pretty honest and simple. Ramp to play 1-2 enchantments or artifacts that cost at least 4 mana. Play Bello and protect Bello. Then smash people in the face with rocks.

    Seeing that Boros precon with a 2-3 over it hurt my soul. Then again, I stopped doing power levels because it's all subjective anyway, and I obsessed over it like a dummy.

    Oh man, the accidental pubstomp happened to me just last week. So this video is well timed. I was playing my upgraded fairy precon from WoE and the game just went way too far in my favor from turn 1. Game started with an insane opener of sol ring, into arcane signet, into ponder. Turn 2 cast Alela, followed by a turn 3 kindred discovery which drew relequary tower on attack. I was in full control the whole game thanks to drawing so many cards and goading all threats, but I felt so bad that I was trying to rush my turns and get a win con as fast as possible to end the game. Even after a board wipe i was so ahead on card advantage and had enough mana to easily rebuild. I was swinging and doing damage but 1/1s werent exactly going to take players out quickly especially when they did have reach and flying blockers to reduce their number every turn.

    I am new to mtg, I’d say about 2 months in. And I bought a bello commander deck and i love this game. However, I did lots of research and found a few holes in the decks idea. So I went have purchased a few cards to boost it up. And it’s still fun, sometimes I can’t get anything going and I draw and watch the others play. But since I added a few cards (mana and molten echos, Mithril) idk if I made anyone annoyed but for the final turn I had a 15 minute turn where I drew and played several enchantments and OTK’d the other 3. I felt bad, I really don’t like eliminating my friends, I understand it’s part of the game I just feel bad picking the first person to actually lose. And I have this feeling I added too much and made it a bit stronger than the others. I was a yugioh player for many years so my adaptation to MTG was quick and I think it caught them off guard. Not sure what to do.

    I (badly) built a Doran that was so midrange I was a constant removal target cuz the others were scared of me (and I still managed to almost win) but also suffered from topdecking and being hella slow

    Mmm. Tip 1: Don't hyperfixate. Sure. I'm here to go smash the next strongest player. If I'm not poised to do that, then what am I doing? Tip 2: Fair enough, excepting when I have haste. Tip 3: I suppose, then again I'm rarely on combat tricks unless it's a Transformed Tovolar. So it's in the open. Tip 4: I'm not much for politics. If someone is trying to politic with me I should scrutinize them more. Tip 5: Can't fault. I like to diversify my threats at a point. A creature or two, and then a non-creature engine or other support, like a number of on the board haste effects. Then if a board wipe happens, Boom! Drop a creature and smite whoever wrathed.

      Mmm, Got Rafiq in the 99 of my Pheldagrif Voltron deck. Heh heh heh. My Syr Gwyn is living equipment typal. So I can have two equipments out and draw cards on T5 or so when I cast Syr Gwyn. And Saskia on the right setup can burn people down so fast. Bonus points for including Cultist of the Absolute so she's +3/+3, flying, and can be easily retargeted should the chosen player die.
