In the dusty foothills of Colorado Springs, where the Rockies meet the prairie, a band emerged-one part cosmic cowboys, one part whiskey-soaked poets. Their name? Mortimer Hawkins. Their genre? Alt country rock. But their story? Well, that’s where things get interesting.
The Early Days
In the mid-1970s, when bell-bottoms were still in vogue and pickup trucks ruled the highways, Mortimer Hawkins found their groove. Picture a smoky dive bar, neon signs flickering, and the jukebox spinning Gram Parsons tunes. That’s where they cut their teeth. Lead singer Jasper “Whiskey Jack” McAllister had a voice like a gravel road, and his lyrics-oh, those lyrics-were equal parts heartache and moonshine wisdom.
They shared stages with the likes of Firefall, harmonizing under starlit Colorado skies. Mortimer Hawkins was the band you stumbled upon, half-drunk, and suddenly believed in fate.

The first breakup came in '79. Jasper rode off on his Harley, leaving a note scrawled on a Coors beer label: “Gone to find my muse.” The remaining members scattered like tumbleweeds. Lila joined a bluegrass band in Nashville, Zeke became a trucker hauling freight across Texas, and the keyboardist, Floyd “Keys” Patterson, opened a metaphysical bookstore in Santa Fe.
But legends never die-they just take a hiatus. In '89, at a chili cook-off in Taos, fate intervened. Jasper stumbled upon Lila, now strumming a mandolin in a folk trio. Zeke, still wearing his aviator shades, was playing drums for a mariachi band. And Floyd? Well, he’d become a tarot card reader with a penchant for predicting rainstorms.
The reunion was awkward at first. Jasper had forgotten most of the lyrics, and Lila’s fiddle was out of tune.
