What Causes Migraine Headaches? | Migraine Surgery Specialty Center
Dr. Adam Lowenstein, physician and surgeon at the Migraine Surgery Specialty Center, discusses how compression of nerves in the forehead and in the neck can send distress signals to the brain which are interpreted into pain, photophobia, nausea, and other symptoms that define migraines. These nerve compressions causing migraine headaches can be fixed with outpatient surgery, decompressing the nerves that are sending the distress signals. This nerve decompression surgery is NOT BRAIN SURGERY and only addresses sensory nerves, so it is very low risk but has a better than 90% success rate. Not all headaches are from nerve decompression and neither this video nor any other internet information should be taken as medical advice nor be a substitute for the advice of your physician.
The more you know about your migraine, the more you can understand how to get rid of migraine pain for good.

What is occipital neuralgia and what does occipital neuralgia look like? Occipital Neuralgia is an irritation of the occipital nerves found in the neck. These nerves provide feeling to the neck and the back of the head. When the occipital nerves are irritated they create pain in the head and neck that can be felt as shooting pains or constant pain, depending on the patient. Depending on the pat...

Most often there is no need for migraine treatment as any residual headaches are mild and can be treated with over the counter medications like Tylenol. If some migraines remain, they are often treatable with drugs such as triptans, even when those medications were ineffective before surgery.

I think this is what is happening to me. I had an occipital nerve block 4 days ago and I’ve had a migraine for 3 days with nothing helping to stop the pain. Tylenol Advil Sudafed etc. how long will this go on if it’s the irritated nerve from the nerve block that is causing my pain?

I’ve just been diagnosed after 3 years of electrocution to my face in all 3 branches. I’m not presenting with headache at all but Trigeminal pain. Nothing was working in the end even Carbomazepine. I told the Neurologist I get the worst neck pain and sleep with ice as I can’t take it. It reduces the attacks during the night. My sternocleidomastoid muscle swells every time too. I always feel like I can’t drop my left shoulder. I’ve just had an occipital nerve block although I knew it wouldn’t work. To my surprise it’s took it away after two weeks. I can brush my teeth using my electric toothbrush and cleanse my face without attacks. The Neurologist said the Occipital nerve can be trapped and refer pain to the Trigeminal pain. I’ve never felt a pain like this as I feel every bit of the current through my face and it burns. I can’t believe it’s worked and nothing I look up shows this but headaches. I had to be different! 🍃

I’m not sure if I had a stroke or what happened I had Covid three times and I felt my brain swelling down like my neck area. My school plates had moved and overlapped over each other my scalp for a year. I couldn’t really speak right my eyes were glossy, my leg was kind of like dragging it still does, though I used to rollerskate but I mean it’s a lot better now . I’m trying to get back to work. I’m gonna go back to work. It’s been three years. I want to try to get this done. Try to get some sort of a life back. Thank you for posting these videos.

I have pain in the front of my neck that started behind my head behind my ear and traveled down my neck to back of head.one side..and to my collarbone. The first neurosurgeon mentioned occipital neuralgia because I would cry when the front and of my neck muscle would spasm. He could actually see it happening. This is all one sided pain..I don’t have migraines. I also developed Allodynia later on under my neck, front of one side of neck and chest. I get a sensation that goes all the way from my occipital nerve behind my ear down my arm into my thumb. I’ve had head mris and Ct scans which show I have issues with c-3 c-4 but I get the feeling that that not really causing this. I’ve seen two neurosurgeons that are stumped. I was offered ACDF surgery if a diagnostic cortisone injection in that area gives me relief. Does this sound like I could have occipital neuralgia?

If the nerve block made your scalp numb in the area of your headache and yet your pain did not go away, then the nerve block was done correctly and it is unlikely that you are a surgery candidate. If your scalp did NOT go numb then your nerve block was not done correctly for a diagnostic block and it does not mean anything, and you may still be a candidate for surgery.
