    Thanks for sharing your Canyonland Adventure. At twelve years old, my parents Eric and Kathy Nelson and their English teacher colleague couple Dave and Theresa Petersen and I drove two sport utility vehicles ours being an excellent Ford Explorer as far in as we could, and then backpacked 3 days in. We set up elaborate camp by an Anasazi village complete with pictographs, a kachina underground sacred area, and much 'abandoned' pottery shards and corn husks. A nearby cave which my mom Kathy found scary contained more fascinating Anasazi religious pictographs. These were great people the Anasazi. This was my best and deepest Canyon Lands adventure; Although I and my family visited Moab and Canyon Lands say 5 more times; also seeing many other great Southwest Parks, one of my favorite being Goblin Valley.

    6:20 looked like Morning Glory Arch/Grandstaff Trail. It is one of our favorite hiking trails. It is only 3 miles down Rt. 128 from town (191.) Next time rent a UTV from Moab Tour Co. and drive out to Chicken Corners. Trust this tip- you will love it. Yes, Fiery Furnace is a great hike. Also, head over to Zion for a night or two- hike Angels Landing. It's worth it and really not too far.

    Just wanted to point out that the gravel road at the end of Highway 279 goes all the way to Canyonlands NP. It turns into Shafer Canyon Trail, which is the switch backs you see at 8:20 in the video! It's an amazing drive and takes you through canyons and right along the Colorado river, but it's 45 miles long so it takes quite awhile

    Amazing video. Any idea if it would be worth visiting these places end of November? I know it will be a bit cold but I read that it's sunny most afternoons and there are lesser crowds during that time.

    • @dandawson8128

      I can easily say YES. We just visited this area in late March, and while the crowds weren’t nonexistent, they definitely were more manageable than the busier seasons. Also, Arches requires a reservation from April through October, so thankfully we avoided that requirement also. I’m contemplating a future trip back there again around Thanksgiving for this reason to miss the busy season. Bring a jacket and some gloves and you’ll be fine.

      We don't have any firsthand experience with Moab in February but it could be really great! Moab isn't very big so where exactly you stay shouldn't matter too much. However all the things we mention are accessed from the north side of Moab. Have a great trip!

    We were there last week. We did most of the things you suggested but didn't get to the Dead Horse state park. However, we did drive down the switchbacks on the Shafer Trail and took the Shafer Basin Trail to Potash Road. Our daughter had a meltdown going down the switchbacks but once committed it didn't seem like a place to try and turn around. If someone in your vehicle is terrified of heights, it's best avoided.

    • @JonesingforAdventure

      We like to check on Campendium for reviews before we decide on a place. We ended up at Slickrock Campground which was just ok/a bit disappointing in our opinion. We would check out another one next time but since we don't have any experience yet we can't recommend any. If you can fit, staying inside Arches for at least one night would be amazing (we did that with a smaller rig years ago). Dead Horse Point and the BLM campgrounds along the river are also worth looking into although we don't have personal experience with either (yet). Have fun!

      Enjoy your time in Moab! You will love it! We made sure to only fly the drone in areas that were outside of state/national parks. The whole area has cool formations and beautiful scenery so it's not hard to find a quiet, out of the way area to fly.

    My favorite hiking trail is Grandstaff. It's about 5 miles round trip, but a cool, spring fed stream runs the length of the trail, so it's easy to cool off. At the end of the trail you can fill your water bottles with spring water coming from between the rocks in the canyon wall.

    I just got back from moab. I did all the national park stuff. We did the hikes in arches and canyon lands which were fun. But simply nothing compared to the stomping grounds in the klondike bluffs. 2000+ dino prints of theropods, sauropods, ornithopods. My wife and I agreed that this was our number one attraction we saw, number two wasn't even close. It's free and secluded.... which blows my mind. If you care at all about natural history this is a must see. I almost don't want to tell people about it, just let them keep going to arches and canyon lands to selfishly preserve the prints for me to enjoy.

    Went to Moab for the 1st time last May. Besides all the beautiful places you’ve covered & others mentioned here, check out a drive that is a big loop from Moab… start very early cause the ending is the best part & you’ll want as much time as possible. From Moab, take 128 north along the River stop at Fisher Towers, continue to I-70 & go thru Colorado National Monument, exit in Grand Junction… THEN…. Something apparently not many people know about… A 4-5 hour drive (if you don’t stop) along the Unaweep-Tabeguache Scenic Byway. This is an absolutely stunning drive that apparently not many know about cause we saw maybe 10 cars the entire time. Try to hit it as early as possible so you can stop for great pics. There is a good 2 lane road with one 6% grade section towards the end. WARNING: go prepared with food, water as there are no conveniences, hardly ever any cell service, very few houses & even fewer passing vehicles. You want to be out of the Byway & back on 191 before dark… in case you have car trouble… experience speaking. From Grand Junction, take HWY 50 to 141 to 90 & finally to 46 which takes you to 191 & back into Moab. There are some UA-cam videos of the area… even the very old ones are good.

    How many days to cover your top 3 on the list? Great video btw.

    • @JonesingforAdventure
      @JonesingforAdventure 3 роки тому

      We think you need a minimum of 2 full days to get a good overview of all three parks. In 2 days we'd do this (both days includes some afternoon rest/dinner back in Moab/your home base): DAY 1 Arches NP - Everything but Delicate Arch. Don't miss Landscape Arch, Garden of Eden/Double Arch/Windows, & Park Avenue. Pack a sack lunch for the most efficient visit. Dead Horse Point SP - Dead Horse Point is amazing at sunset and it isn't a big hike so we'd suggest doing it on the main Arches day to distribute the hiking a little more evenly across the two days. DAY 2 Canyonlands NP - As much as you can see. Don't miss Grand View Point (we like the hike along the canyon edge) and Mesa Arch. Pack a sack lunch again. Arches NP Delicate Arch - The Delicate Arch at sunset experience is a can't miss. It is very popular with lots of people but it is still amazing. If you have 3 days you can be a little more leisurely in your sightseeing and probably add in the drive along the river to see the petroglyphs/dinosaur tracks and get a different perspective (being by the river is a much different vibe than above at the parks). 4 days would open up some time for off-roading and/or an on-the-river experience. Hopefully that helps! Enjoy - it's an amazing place to visit!

    • @JonesingforAdventure
      @JonesingforAdventure 3 роки тому

      @@rdiesel84 Last we checked, you don't need a reservation to visit any of the three parks (Arches, Canyonlands, or Dead Horse Point). You pay the entrance fees at the entrance gate for each. If you plan on visiting more National Parks within a year, we think a National Parks pass makes a lot of sense and you can buy that at the entrance station as well.
