My Estill Voice Journey. Come train with me | Essential Voice #shorts
I met Jo Estill over 20 years ago when my voice was struggling. I was working as a singer, and her training program changed my voice and my life!
I have continued to practice Estill Voice Figures™ and eventually became a Certified Estill trainer: an ESTILL Master Trainer and now an ESTILL Mentor & Course Instructor with Service Distinction and Advanced Testing Privileges.
I have noticed that many singers my age are no longer singing with the freedom that I enjoy; their range may be diminished, as is their stamina and control, and they may experience a loss of power.
I can honestly say that my voice has gone from strength to strength as I have gotten older. I can only put this down to ESTILL Voice Training, as my voice was a shadow of what it is today as a result of ESTILL. Voice Training.
I am a working singer still and it brings me joy! But what also brings me enormous joy is to share this extraordinary voice training model with others. It really works!!
I lead courses and workshops online and in person - in Australia and across Asia. I run a certification program with support from and expert international team.

How much breath do we need for Belting?
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
How much breath do you really need for singing high and loud? Not much at all! It is a basic misconception that loud voicing needs a big breath in preparation. To make a loud sound the vocal folds need to make contact for a longer time in each vibratory cycle - and breath can make that very difficult. It may even prohibit comfortable, efficient belting. Watch this video to see it in action! #vo...

    Thanks for your interesting video. Your differences in timbre demonstrated on the spectrogram could also be attributed to your axis to the microphone that you are using. Do you run the estill course in Australia? Which state are you in?

    • @essentialvoice2666
      @essentialvoice2666 8 місяців тому

      That is definitely a possibility -the proximity effect can certainly influence timbre - however the feedback from independent listeners in the room confirm there is a subtle change in tone also. I am based in Melbourne but have courses scheduled for Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide for 2024 as well as online options.

    this is amazing! I'd love to see a video on your & Estill's perspective of "supporting"/managing breathe, and if there is any mention of keeping the chest/ribs wide and using the pelvic muscles!!

    • @essentialvoice2666
      @essentialvoice2666 7 місяців тому

      One of Estill's operating principles is that "the air must respond to what it meets on the way out". Based on voice science rather than traditional singing pedagogy. Simplistically, when the voice is 'louder' the vocal folds are making contact for longer in the cycle of vibration and too much breath with undermine the efficiency. For more information and to dive deeper, come and do a voice training course with us!

    Sorry, but this is inaccurate. The chricothyroid tilt uses the chricothyroid muscles which results in lengthening the folds. It‘s the Thyroarytenoid muscles which shorten the folds, and that‘s not a tilting process.

    • @essentialvoice2666
      @essentialvoice2666 Рік тому

      I absolutely agree. Either it was a slip of the tongue or you misheard. The thyroarytenoid shortens the TVFs and Cricothyroid muscle lengthens and thins the TVFs. it is proposed that the cricopharyngeus muscle contracts and tilts the cricoid - this is the lower section of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor. There is always more to learn

  • @vobavocal
    @vobavocal Рік тому

    The laryngoscopy video shows someone who is unable to hold their instrument open when singing. Since when is that something to aspire to? I've learned that this is a sign of a poorly trained voice...

    • @essentialvoice2666
      @essentialvoice2666 Рік тому

      I'm wondering where you learned this? This is the cricoid tilting - the false vocal folds (ventricular folds) are retracted and the true vocal folds are free to vibrate efficiently. The instrument is 'open'

    • @vobavocal
      @vobavocal Рік тому

      That is not what i see. As off the moment when she says "the pitch rises" (min 5:30) the epiglottis tilts so far back that we cannot even see the vestibular/ventricular folds anymore. The epiglottis and the arytenoid cartilages come so close to one another that we cannot even see the vocal cords anymore at some point. That will diminish the volume that the people outside hear, because her sound reflects on the walls of her throat too often. There is no clear path for the sound waves. But worse: It's even dangerous for the singer, because when she raises the pitch and the entire walls of her throat come in, its very likely that the vestibular folds get closer to the vocal cords (because the tissue isn't stretched - which would make the vestibular folds be pulled to the outside - but rather collapses - which makes the vestibular folds be more lose and hang lower over the vocal cords -). And that makes it very likely that the vocal cords start to rub against the vestibular folds, since there is most likely little to no more space betweem the two (which we can't see in this video, cause the throat tightens up so much that the epiglottis entirely hides the vestibular folds). And when vocal cords rub against vestibular folds long and often enough, we get hoarse and eventually edema if that keeps on going. With a well trained voice (for healthy sound production) the walls of the throat would not come in like that to have less and less space when a singer goes higher. It would have more and more space instead, to keep vocal cords and vestibular folds apart for vocal health. Just because something can happen (cricoid tilting upwards) doesn't mean its good when it does.

      @@vobavocal There is so much to unpack in your comments. Thank you for taking the time to respond. We definitely have a different approach. A 'well-trained voice' may be trained in one particular voice quality/genre. From your comments, I surmise that your background is classical voice. Certainly, in a contemporary music context, a higher larynx position, with narrowed aryepiglottic sphincter, is a reasonable option and appropriate for some repertoire. This lowering of the epiglottis creates an 'extra resonating chamber in the pharynx that boosts 2 - 4 kHz , resulting in a brighter sound and projection. It may not be one's preferred sound, but it is not dangerous when performed efficiently. With the raising of the larynx will come pharyngeal narrowing with the activation of suprahyoids and pharyngeal constrictors. All this is above the vocal folds (true & false) and can be done without any potential risk to vocal health, Estill Voice Training offers a unique training program to develop differentiated control of vocal tract structures.

    • @francescomecorio
      @francescomecorio Рік тому

      Could you please explain what would the benefit of keeping the instrument “open” in a belt (therefore bright) sound be? I mean without laryngeal constriction. That is interesting to know. Possibly with scientific evidence (peer reviewed reference) that can support your statement. Otherwise, we must conclude that you legitimately just have a different artistic approach and aesthetic preference that I personally respect. But I wouldn’t identify a different artistic approach as a rule to impose to anyone else in the world. Curious to know more about this “open instrument” idea please. Thanks.

    • @vobavocal
      @vobavocal Рік тому

      @@essentialvoice2666 Of course I'll respond. I love geeking out on the voice with other dedicated folk. Thanks for answering as well. I don't think that a well trained voice is well trained only in one genre. For me it's more about the muscles being able to do whatever genre in a healthy sustainable manner and also switch between all types of genres effortlessly. I'm actually from a Jazz and Musical background, not classical. But I also had some teachers that could do both classical, as well as moddern styles. The boost of the overtones around the 3kHz mark can also be achieved with a more open instrument, without the back tilt of the epiglottis. Specifically when the ventricle (space between the vestibular folds and vocal cords) opens up, these frequencies can easily gain in volume. And yes, we don't have to always keep the thyroid cartilage super low, but even with a super low thyroid cartilage we can achieve super bright belting sound when we don't widen the thyroid cartilage. So I don't see why we should let everything come in when we can also achieve bright sounds keeping the throat more open, totally avoiding the risk of vestibular folds-vocal cords contact. Now, that it's all “above the vocal folds (true & false)” and how the walls caving in from all angles, plus the thyroid cartilage coming up ... all that not having an impact on the distance between vocal cords and vestibular folds is something that is difficult for me to grasp at present. But maybe there is something there that keeps the two apart that I didn't understand yet. I also couldn't hear the ladies voice in the video, so I have no idea how it actually sounded with the laryngoscopy video. So basically I don't understand why we should raise the larynx and narrow everything when we can have the same (or sharper) bright sounds even with a wide throat and a larynx in the middle of the throat, which prevents us from hurting outselves. What's the benefit of playing with the fire here?

    Thank you for your video. For me, it is different. I've been singing with a natural vibrato since I was young which came from emulating my favourite singers. I feel it is created from my diaphragm because a) I can feel it coming from there and b) as I belt and require stronger support, the vibrato gets more difficult to attain. If your comment is that I am doing it wrong, I would understand that. But this is what appears to be working for me, and the vibrato sound natural to others. All the very best

    I figured this out while trying to add more weight to my belts. My belts tend to be feminine and high. Im a huge Mariah Carey fan and she literally taught me how to belt. I tend to gravitate towards lyrics and coloraturas since I’m able to mimic them easier. But, I envy richer voices, and I never sounded quite right trying to force depth in my voice as a contemporary singer. Tilting downwards allows a more fuller “throaty” sound when needed. I guess because you’re compressing the chords?

      Nope. It's the same principle of why you can't achieve the low notes of an acoustic bass on a violin. The lower you go in pitch, the longer the wavelength of the note. You need to stretch your vocal folds to accommodate the wavelength increase otherwise the desired pitch and timbre just won't happen.
