A Cornice Test was performed on the entrance of this wind loaded chute. The cornice was approx. three cubic meters and released a slab 24" to 30" on the wind loaded portion and 12" further down the couloir. It slid on a layer of hoar frost buried within the last couple of weeks. This layer was persistent on north faces and received a score CT15 Q1 in the stability tests performed lower in the b...

Cornice test performed with The BackcountryBomb Tool. Cutting a cornice is an excellent way to assess a slope for avalanche risk. Use this in conjunction with other stability tests to gain knowledge of snowpack structure and stability.

This cornice was cut with The BackcountryBomb Tool. The layer of concern here was approx. 16" down and giving clean shears in stability tests. We also performed a Cornice test on this north/northeast facing slope. This three cubic meter cornice released a large slab.

This cornice was cut with the BackcountryBomb tool in about ten seconds. It did not trigger a large slide. There were two layers of concern, one at 2 feet and mature facets on the ground. This cornice test was performed to assess snowpack stability. It was used in conjunction with snowpit compression tests in an attempt to mitigate risk of avalanche.
