Retirement and sharing the house work
Retirement and Sharing the Housework
Things change. They always do. So do not expect things in the home to be the same when you retire. This is particularly so when it comes to the sharing of housework. If both partners in a relationship are no longer in paid employment the subject of housework is very likely to come up.
In this video I talk about some of the adjustments made by my wife and I that we might live in greater harmony where it comes to an equitable distribution of housework in and around our home.

Planning for Retirement

Planning for Retirement Are you over 50? Then you need to start planning for “The Final Third.” Too early to both about that? Don’t you believe it. You could be a “Retiree” (What a misleading word!) for a third of your life - or longer! I’ve now been retired for longer than a third of mine. Everything changes - everything and every thing except one…
Creating a happy retirement

Creating a Happy Retirement Here, the emphasis is on the ‘creating’ of a happy retirement - your retirement! We are all creators. Few of us realize it. We can encourage our ability to create, that is, come up with the ideas that, if we implement them, can lead to increasing our happiness. In retirement we have lots of time and opportunity to do so. In this video I present you with a few little ...
What's it like in Australia as a Retiree?

I moved here from England in 1951, and even though I’ve lived and worked in Papua-New Guinea, New Zealand...
Retirement and what to expect in Retirement

Retirement and what you can expect in retirement The trouble with most of us is we expect our lives to unfold subject to how things have been in the past; a projection that is a continuity of what’s gone before. Yet life doesn’t work that way. It’s almost certain not to when we do something as significant as leaving our paid working life and becoming a so-called retiree. I say “so-called” becau...

You re a very fair person. My husband and I have retired 5-6 years ago but I still do all the housework and everything. Due to this we fought over this many times but nothing has changed. He is a very free man.. Now I go my way and he goes his... He cleans where he sleeps but I have to cover more areas and do other chores. Right now he doesn't even spent a cent on me. He's got government help and he doesn't share it. I just wait for the day where I can be away from him.. hopefully it will come... but not now.

A fascinating sociological topic. First 40 years I worked full time as a teacher and also did the house management which included shopping, dry cleaners, ordering logs, managing tradesmen, cleaning etc plus care for our son picking him up and dropping off school various sports and activities. Our son and I also tended our 5 horses morning and evening which we kept at home. Hobby went to work. His chores were all at the weekend- gardening, DIY, rubbish management etc mainly because he was out of the house from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday or was working away. Once we retired I continued to do the majority of the home management, then Covid struck! Hubby was bored and step by step he took over each of the home chores to ‘optimise’ their correct carrying out 😅, he was an Engineer so wanted to show me ‘how to do it better’ haha. After 2 years he said to me ‘I don’t feel appreciated, you take me for granted’ I’m sorry but I cried with laughter for about an hour, even now I’m laughing as I type this! He started to laugh too… when I pointed out my 40 years of doing it without any overt or voiced appreciation 😅 he’s continued to do the home chores as he says he enjoys it and it provides him structure around playing golf etc. I still do the ironing and we share the cooking…. PS Perhaps do a video on humour in retirement as we do laugh a lot especially about our creaking bodies and various aspects of ageing…

This video has made me feel annoyed and rather resentful. My husband does very little apart from the garden and sometimes the dishes. He does take me places I want to go as I stopped driving which helped my sciatica. What annoys me most is when he says ‘I’ve done your dishes for you’. That’s after I cooked the meal of course. Maybe you should do another video of how to make husbands do their fair share!

That was the idea of this one, Kate, in a way. So many men don't realize that when their paid job is finished, they should do their half of the work that is ongoing in any household. So often, they failed to realize that.

@@arthurthomasware5004 he’s very good in so many other ways Tom if I’m being completely fair. I don’t care about him doing half, just a bit more than he does now. Glad to see you exploring this subject. My parents have long passed Tom, but I distinctly remember a conversation I had with my mother concerning expectations once my father had retired in '85. She was a bit stung by the fact my father ('23 model) had once told her when he retired he intended to sit down on the porch and rock the rest of his life- she said she thought he was joking at the time. Pop never really changed his habits, he did everything expected of a father of course, but "women's work" wasn't done unless she was gone for a few days (a rare occurrence). Mother was most upset that her hopes of travel didn't quite live up to her expectations, they did a bit, but not enough in mother's eyes who I believe felt that was the "payoff" down the road for being the good wife and raising five kids. It got me thinking that the old nuclear family model was not great once the man retired, each has been tied to his job and her house, but all he wants to do is relax and all she wants to do is get out and DO something. Clearly the two are at odds. It was a bit sad that once my mother developed Alzheimer's they had to be put in separate rooms at the care facility as my mother wouldn't recognize my father and was mean to him. I am sure it hurt him to the core but he never spoke of it to us kids. In my experience, men these days are much more likely to share all chores and try to be a more equitable partner.

Great insights and wise words Tom. I've got to fess up that between the ages of 25 and 35, I was a pretty happy go lucky, fly by seat of my pants young man. I was working dead end jobs, drinking too excess, partying and quite irresponsible. I'd never married and it was easy to live a carefree, bohemian lifestyle. However, that all changed when I hit 40 and finally bought my first and only home. I had lucked in at age 36 and by chance, landed a job via an agency, where I was able to work my way up from a storeman, into management. I was only just able get a loan as a 40 y.o. single man to buy that home and pretty well paid it off by age 54. I also quit drinking earlier in that period of time. In hindsight, life is choice and if an alternate history was an option, I would have hunkered down and stayed on track when I started full time work (an apprenticeship) in my teens........ Thank you Tom. Sean.

I was a bit the same way, Sean: smoked, drank to excess, and, like you, started to ease back at 41. Fortunately, I always managed to have reasonably well paid jobs and had the common sense to get out of that big mortgage dept as early as I could.

At times its surreal for me to've just completed that distant 'retirement' journey. I'd been a Gov employee since age 19, was going to night school after work when at 28 entered a nursing program affiliated w/my work. They sell you hard on that 'pension' security. So few get there or if they do they're morbidly obese and/or otherwise unhealthy, or divorced, etc. Amazed it's 25 yrs later since those nursing school long days to mostly carefree 'retirement' days that do pass by quickly!

I spent most of my working life in government jobs, too, Anthony. But some of 'em were very interesting, e.g. navy, then civil aviation, and even a bit over a year as a government employee with Australia's Antarctic Division. That said, I still had my fill of boring, non-rewarding office work.

How can one go through life and not be a lifelong learner? I know many try. "Retire" shouldn't mean "stop doing stuff" it should just be a transition or reweighting of what you do. Society used to value old peoples experience more than I believe they do now. This was a good thing because it gives older people more to do and we do really need their wisdom and learned experience. Everyone has the chance to get old so that makes it a fair system. Respecting and celebrating your elders makes the world better for people of all ages.

The biggest issue for us ‘Aged parents’ with offspring living in Australia the current wait for a visa is 14 years for contributory 864 visa and 30 years for non contributory 804. Whilst waiting onshore you get a BVA bridging visa - but with lots of restrictions around buying a home. You have to pay 7% stamp duty plus foreign investor fees which are HUGE. If we move our pensions to Australia again huge restrictions and fees, and we lose 25% to UK govt by moving SIPs from the UK. Also you must have majority of your kids living there. So anyone with 3 kids (2 living elsewhere) has issues… we’ve got just one so we’re ok. The offshore visas are the same with 12-14 years wait (contribution) and 30 years wait (non contribution). The only other option is the 870 which is a 5 year visa (but no reciprocal health care) and you can only get this visa twice with a 90 days where you must leave Australia in between. We’re still trying to work out what’s the best option for us, so just planning on multiple entry tourist visas for the time being.

Gawd! Never knew a thing about the 'red tape,' BoninBrighton. Thanks for letting the readers know. I came here as "A Ten Pound Pom" under the Australian Governments Migration Scheme in 1951 - as did hundred of thousands of others. Different world then.

@@arthurthomasware5004 yep we’ve been researching all of this for the past 6 mths since our son asked us to join him in Perth. I think we will try 6/3/3 UK/Perth/Thailand for a few years before we decide what to do….also the Aussie govt is deciding what to do atm with the growing waiting lists of parents.

I have several cousins in Australia around the Melbourne area. One of my aunts emigrated there with her husband as Ten Pound Poms, but they later returned to the UK and retired there. Were you also one of the Poms and do you still have your UK nationality? I've kept mine although I've lived abroad for over 40 years.

I'm a Ten Pound Pom, Expatexpat. I became a Aussie Citizen 29 years after arriving here. It became clear to me that after serving in the Aussie Navy for six years, followed by five years as a Navy Reservist, and a year as on an Australian Antarctic expedition, in 1978 when I decided to join the navy reserves again, I was told I couldn't because I wasn't an Australian citizen. How's that for bureaucratic inconsistency!

One big stable weather system in Australia! It’s a bit different in the UK! The weather forecasters study the UK because we have 5 major weather systems competing for supremacy over the UK: artic maritime (cold and wet), polar continental (cold and dry), tropical continental (warm and dry), tropical maritime (warm and wet) and polar maritime (cold and wet), plus the jet stream moves north and south over the UK depending on the season, but has kinks in it just to make things interesting and keep us on our toes. The only thing that you can guarantee is that the weather is going to change, and you can sometimes experience all four seasons in one day.

Great insights and always uplifting to listen to. Yes we still are lucky to be living in this country. Take this as a compliment Tom, but that thumbnail of you in the Antarctic reminds of a classic photo of one of members of the original British SAS sitting in three jeeps in the North African desert during WW2. The leaves are turning here in the lower mtns of the Sierras here in California too. The worst outcome for Australia would be to allow itself to be dragged into the dying NATO/US empire's desire for turning Australia into a staging area for war with China. So many different War Mongers here in the states it's really sad.
