I used 6 or 7 different layers of the same snare. It's kinda hard to explain without pictures, but in short: The main tone of the RB26 inline 6, I use a 6 bar pattern where there's a snare on every bar except the 6th bar. If you just do that, then compress the pattern down to its smallest bit so that you can get as many revolutions as possible as you turn up the tempo (Aka rev the engine), that will give you a very basic V6 sound. I also layer that with a snare pattern that will be one octave lower, one that will be 7 keys lower, on that will be 5 keys higher (One octave up from the one that's seven keys lower), and a couple others. Essentially the 6 cylinder engine sounds consists of two tones. One main tone, and a tone that's 7 keys lower. Some inline 6's and flat 6's will give you a main tone, one that's 7 keys lower, and one that's 5 keys higher. Rule of thumb: 5 and 10 cylinder engine sounds have a 5 bar pattern with one empty. 4 cylinder engines have 4 bar patterns with one empty, 8 cylinder engines have an 8 bar pattern (with an extra snare every 4 bars) with 1 empty, or an 8 bar pattern layered onto a 2 bar pattern. 12 cylinder patterns are more or less the same as the 6 cylinder depending on which engine sound you're trying to replicate. For Rotary engine sounds, just layer a 4 bar pattern onto a 2 bar pattern. I also slightly automate the attack filter on the respective snare so that the rev and excel are more potent than the decel.
