Intro to Soldering and Brazing
Переглядів 6528 днів тому
Review of fundamentals of soldering and brazing including wetting of molten alloys. Proper wetting encourages capillary action and allows metal to flow into narrow gaps. Wetting can be controlled by selection of flux, solder alloy, braze alloy, gaps, base metal composition, and operating temperature. Most solder and braze alloys are based on eutectic compositions that help reduce melting point,...
Stud Welding
Переглядів 130Місяць тому
Stud welding is a unique process for welding studs and bolts to metal sheets and plates from one side without having to drill holes. The process is essentially a flash welding process and is very robust, easy to use, easy to train welding personnel, and very fast.
Effect of Arc Welding Process on Weld Strength
Переглядів 1332 місяці тому
We review the effect of welding process including type of process (MIG or TIG), shielding gas, base metal chemistry, and surface oxidation and strength of the weld. This strength value can be different from the values provided by the manufacturer. To get a realistic number, it is better to actually make coupons and test them to failure.
Process Control of GTAW
Переглядів 763 місяці тому
Video describes the fundamentals of GTAW welding process which was previously known as TIG or Heli-Arc Welding. Includes fundamentals of the GTAW arc and relation between the important arc parameters: voltage, current, and arc length. Other parameters such as electrode material, shape, and size also affect the process. Shielding gas has an effect on arc voltage and heat in the arc. One of the b...
Ultrasonic Welding
Переглядів 1173 місяці тому
Ultrasonic Welding is a commonly used process for joining metals and plastics. Ultrasonic welding is used for joining soft metals such as copper, aluminum, and gold; can be used for welding nickel but not as easy. Ultrasonic welding can also be used to weld plastics. Amorphous plastics are the easiest to weld; crystalline plastics and those with fillers are bit more difficult for welding. UW ca...
Conduction and Keyhole Modes in Laser Welding
Переглядів 2594 місяці тому
Videos describes the differences between conduction mode and keyhole mode weld. Conduction mode welds are typically made with low power YAG lasers which have laser spot energy distribution in top hat profile. Keyhole mode welds are typically made with high power lasers including YAG, CO2, disk, or fiber lasers; common applications include structural welds. With low power fiber lasers with good ...
Welding of Wrought Aluminum Alloys
Переглядів 1085 місяців тому
Welding of wrought aluminum alloys with fusion and solid-state process. Video reviews crack susceptibility during fusion welding of aluminum alloys, and methods to reduce cracking by proper selection of filler alloys. Filler alloys can be added as filler alloy, and can also be used in form of base metals. Techniques such as resistance welding, ultrasonic welding, and friction welding can also b...
Liquation Cracks in Welds
Переглядів 3005 місяців тому
Liquation cracks are formed in the PMZ (Partially Melted Zone) adjacent to the fusion zone. Liquation cracks typically form in heat treatable alloys can can be avoided by proper selection of base material, heat treatment condition, filler alloy, rate of heat input, and weld design.
GMAW Spray Transfer Process Parameters
Переглядів 1325 місяців тому
Review of important parameters that control the GMAW spray transfer process. Includes Arc parameters of voltage, wire feed speed, and CTWD or contact tip to work distance. Those three are tied together by ohm's law. Other parameters that can be changed independent of each other are the travel angle, travel speed, work angle, offset, and gas flow rate.
Shielding Gases for Laser Welding
Переглядів 3696 місяців тому
Shielding gases are used in laser welding for a variety of reasons including shielding the molten metal from the ambient, for washing away the soot, and for preventing nail-head formation in the weld zone. Shielding gas may not be required for high speed welding. While Argon is the most commonly used shielding gas, Nitrogen is also a good choice.
Power Supply Technologies for Resistance Welding
Переглядів 576 місяців тому
There are four different technologies in power supplies for resistance welding namely capacitor discharge (CD), alternating current (AC), high frequency (HF) inverter, and direct current (DC). Each power technology offers pros and cons and a user should carefully select one that meets the needs.
Introduction to Welding Symbols
Переглядів 1596 місяців тому
Video reviews fundamentals of welding symbols following rules set by AWS (American Welding Society). Includes symbols for fillet welds, intermittent welds, square groove weld, v groove welds, spot welds, seam welds, laser welds, and resistance welds. Information that is not on the welding symbol is usually included in the drawing notes, or process specifications, on a shop traveler.
Type of Joints and Welds
Переглядів 1346 місяців тому
Joints and Welds describes the different types of joint configurations that can be used for welding, and the different types of welds that can be used to make the connection. We review butt joint, lap joint, T joint, corner joint, and edge joint. And corresponding welds including fillet weld, groove weld, lap weld, corner weld, and edge weld.
Shielding Gases for Arc Welding
Переглядів 3,5 тис.6 місяців тому
Shielding gases used for arc welding including inert gases such as Argon and Helium, and active gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen. Mixed gases are also used to create specific types of welding modes for steels and stainless steels including globular transfer, short circuit transfer, and spray transfer. Most metals including aluminum, titanium, and magnesium use inert gases only for arc we...

    What exactly does pumping mean?

    • @weldnugget
      @weldnugget 4 місяці тому

Pumping is process of providing energy to the lasing atoms so one of their electrons will jump to a higher orbit. After a short time that electron will come down to a lower orbit and in the process will release a photon - the lasing photon. This lasing photon can encourage another atom to release another photon, and this process happens millions of times to produce the laser beam.

Hi Girish, this is Henry. Regarding the addition of 309 to the 304-mild steel weld, how do you come to the conclusion of what percentage of filler will be part of the fusion zone?

    • @weldnugget
      @weldnugget 6 місяців тому

Hi Henry, filler percentage depends on part geometry and size of weld. Square butt joints will have less filler and more base metal. A V-groove joint will have more filler and less base metal. To know for sure you will have to measure weld chemistry (EDS) on a weld section, and then use the Schaeffler diagram to plot it out and back calculate the percentage.
