Catfish in the river Mulde (underwater footage)

Last year I filmed a couple of times in the River Mulde. The conditions were not the best, but is was really interesting and it was fantastic to find three catfish under the maze of the underwater trees. This short clip shows the smallest one.
Catfish missing prey - rare underwater footage

European catfish (Silurus glanis) is considered to be a very effective predator. Recently I filmed a lot during the night and managed to record some excellent footage of successful hunting. But most of the time it missed the prey and many fish managed to get away. This short film is about these survivors.
Pike lake, a fantastic underwater life

I'm still testing the 50mm f1.8 sony lens and I'm still undecided about this. Luckily, my GoPro12 was also with me, but I forgot to re-install my AOI add on lens underwater and the battery died too fast, overall it was a successful dive and underwater shooting.
Night dive with catfish

A catfish with my dive buddy, Torsten. I tried an 50mm f1.8 lens for night dive that didn't work well. However, I took my GoPro Hero 12 with me and it worked better, tan expected. Perch in the dark

The main target was still catfish but at the end of the dive I met few large perch. During the day, they are very shy. It seems to me that catfish doesn't really like perch

After "dry" holiday in Romania and Hungary, back to the water again. I visited a secret shallow lake I have recently found. It's just fantastic with lots of vegetations, clear water and lots of fish.

So you are the brave person who scuba dived with the Wells. What about those great big Muskies we see getting fished on here, would they attack you if you were swimming in the lake or river where they live??
@@WayneScott-w7z probably not

@@jamiesmart9016 it’s perch in the thumbnail, but there are pikes in the video
@@jamiesmart9016my man, you’re trying to correct everyone but you haven’t even watched the entire video
Which brave soul went into the water to film the Wells? That is a monster of a fish. I recently saw a 8ft 10" 280lb monster pulled out of a river in France. I would not like to be in that water. Look at what happened to Jeremy Wade in River Monsters, the thing turned on him and he was by the river bank so imagine in deeper water and that large mouth with its rough sand paper mouth gripping you, you would be a gonner.
It's highly unlikely that a catfish would attack a scuba diver. Usually my problem is to approach the and film them from a close distance. Most of the time they just swim away. This one does not care during the night dives when hunting. Daytime he is more shy.
Oh that Wells is a biggie ❤
It's the second biggest in that lake.
Классное видео 👍
Thanks
doesn't look very effective to me!
To be fair, I included those footage only when the hunt failed.

Not really. It's really a wild specimen. We're just friends
Fascinating to see, but it is an alien species that shouldn't be in any UK waters, especially rivers. Irresponsible and selfish anglers are causing environmental damage by sneaking wels into rivers all around the country.
@@portcullis5622 I filmed it in Germany, it’s native here, but I agree with you
@@secretsofthelake1966 Ah OK, I didn't see/hear that part. Thanks.
@@Robin-dp5bo No need to be so rude, or incorrect. "Native to almost every water in Europe"? Please send me the link to your evidence that Siluris glanis is native to the British Isles. I would find it fascinating. Perhaps you have some nuggets of information that all previous ichthyologists and ecologists have failed to see? Edit: Two days later and I am still waiting for that link to the:fascinating evidence of Siluris glanis being native to the UK. I may have a long wait, as I see that Robin has now deleted his rude and incorrect comment. No apology then?
@@Robin-dp5bo Sorry but Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) is not native in the UK. It was introduced to Britain from Europe in the 1860s.
Northern Germany here. Zander and carp are also not native to our waters, but they are here for such a long time , that people forgot about, that they also were aliens in the first place. I do not know, how zander got here from the East , though, but carp were introduced during the Middle Ages by monks in monastries to serve as food during the Christian feasting period , when the consumption of meat was forbidden. Many of our North German fish hatchery ponds or fishing club ponds were created during those times and are still being used today.
My wife has got a bigger mouth
Dang those are way bigger than American chubs.
How did you get so close without it swimming away?

The difference between them and channel catfish is you can’t keep them with Koi that can fit in there mouths😂.

Love this! Were you shooting 5K wide? Have heard as long as you don't go ultra-wide it's fine
I have used 4K. Considering that water ruins resolution, in my opinion, it doesn't make sense to go over 4K
Drunken catfish?
I think catfish has a bit overhyped reputation. However, I filmed some successful hunting as well. Film is coming soon (subscribe to my channel)
“ There always bigger fish “
Ok, Master Qui-Gon
Call me overly cautious but if Im scuba diving around Wells catfish that can get over 200lbs and legitimate reports of ones over 300lbs exist and Wells catfish are absolutely notorious for being very aggressive towards humans (saw a 10'+ specimen caught by Jeremy Wade still waist deep in the water when released did an instant about face and try to attack him) only way Im scuba diving in such waters is if I KNOW there aren't any records of any Wells catfish being caught over 100lbs a 300lb Wells catfish might not be able to swallow a scuba diver but it sure as hell could ruin your outlook on life
It would be extremely rare but yeah those Wels are no joke. They could potentially damage your equipment or even knock you unconscious. If catfish are the scariest thing in the water you’ll probably be alright though. Where I live we’re more worried about gators and sharks 😅
It's only aggressive during the mating season and by protecting the nest. Most of the time, even the big ones, they just swimm away from scuba divers.
There unable to eat you so they have no reason to attack you, only if they guard there eggs
@@draco2378 you tell that to a 10+ ft wels

Zander intentionally waits the last millisecond. Because in the wild they are too often visited by catfish, and any exaggerated re-actions would be pointless. Bcs they would spend the nights in evading catfish moving all over the water.
