What makes this a bittersweet funeral is that they are literally having one more laugh with Chapman most especially with the swearing in John Cleese's speech and the fact they are celebrating his life with positivity which is something not usually present in other funerals.
In 1989, when this funeral happened, I was barely a teenager an knew nothing of Monty Python. Yet as a huge fan later, an now at age 50, I look back at this eulogy an feel a profound, deep sadness. That was the power an influence of Monty Python an all the crew. They have, an always will, transcend time. THAT is what makes them icons.
Monty Python is without a doubt the best comedy group of all time. On their own they are all hilarious, but together they are absolutely phenomenal. That’s precisely one of the reasons why it’s so distinctly sad to see any of them go.😔😔😔
To imagine I was born two years later. Wow. I watch everything from them. It makes me sad that one of the true comedic geniuses of this world died before I was even born
strange how they did not sing look on the bright side of life. I mean the imagination of creativity does not always TRANSLATE very well into life. I mean here atheists never shed a tear for Jesus or the moth of Jesus yet used the moment of death to get laughs. how little emotions are understood by atheists.
Big fan of Month python but I'd never seen this before. I'm A 58 year old man laughing and crying at the same time, tears streaming down my face watching a funeral from 32 years ago. only Monty Python could do that. 😭🤣😭🤣 RIP Graham. Thanks for the joy and laughter you brought to me and millions of people ❤
The best gay British comic he was so funny with the Python guys how we miss his humor and jokes rest in peace alongside your follow Python Terry Jones.
As some people in the comments here pointed out Eric Idle being tearful and smiling: i think the best way of mourning someone is: crying and smiling at the same time, i.e.: Crying out of sadness because somebody close to you passed on, while smiling because that person was there in the first place.
He said it best in that song: Some things in life are bad, that can really make you mad, other things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewin' on life's gristle, don't grumble, give a whistle and this'll make things turn out for the -worse- best.
Cheese upon learning Chapman was gay, refused to speak to him for nearly 2 years other than on set..He eventually got used to the idea and resumed a normalised relationship with him
thats not true - or at least misleading. cleese wasnt upset that chapman was gay, but that he hasnt told him. they have been working closely together for decades, very closely. they might have shared the same hotel room, or even the same bed. cleese sometimes ran around naked during the making of the flying circus... and there might have been some situation which in hindsight might have been very upsetting to cleese. in the docu monty python almost the truth cleese said sth like: we were very surprised and he took this as disapproval - and all the other pythons agreed, that chapman was a very difficult person, who wasnt easy to have a conversation with - outside of work (esp. when drunk, which was always...). so there are many possible scenarios, in which cleeses reasons for not talking to chapman for 2 years (i dont know where you got that number from) had nothing to do with being homophobic - and it might have been chapmans fault - or simply because cleese lived in a different country at that time / had other projects etc.
I met graham yesterday and today someone tell me that he died in 1989 😓 always look on the light side of death Graham Brian cohen from nazaret rest in piece bro salutation from Dominican Republic .
That is what i hope to get in my own funeral: have a lot a fun, have a drink, smoke some weed, listen to good music and enjoy the moment. While you can, with friends, love and friendship. And if you get to screw someone in the Chists House loo, well, the more, the merrier... It would mean the lot to me, for you to have a jolly good time. I hope the Church dont make a such fuss over it... You know them...
man... great service... dont remember him as a dead man but the free laoding bastard who you loved and called friend... also this whole funeral was basically the last ever monty python sketch almost... thats how it should be... may he rest in piece with that damn parrot... also cleese qouted the parrot sketch thereXD
This was NOT Chapman's funeral. It was a televised memorial service held two weeks after his funeral. His actual funeral was private and attended only by family - the other Python members, although invited, stayed away so that it wouldn't become a media circus.
I'd like to have John Cleese at my own funeral. As well as I've been trying to make life comfortable for myself and significant others, as happy I'm expecting to be at the end of it. The struggle is over. No fuss, no flowers, just a lot of joy!!!
This has style and pazaz this is what I would want at a memorial service Yes yes it is,isin't, is, isn't, Yes it is,, no more arguing today dang this is getting to silly.
When I go, this is is the way I want it to be... And! No fuckin food will be served except for beer & hard liquor.. Well, maybe some fuckin nuts or an albatross. 🤘😜🤘

this video is proof that funerals don't have to be sad in order to honor whoever passed away 😂
MONTY PYTHON. Любимая труппа актёров BEATLES.Убегали с репетиции посмотреть их по ТВ. На смерть одного из актëров.

According to TV Tropes this would be an example of "The "Fun" in Funeral."

This is so funny yet so incredibly sad. I think Graham would've loved it
Great senbd off Pick me
I can imagine Graham Chapman saying that. 😢😢
what a tribute... what more can ya archive in life then such comrades
If your memorial consisted of a roast, you done good in life!
Jonathan Miller looking as if he's there to give a critique. What a pretentious prick he is.
There can’t be a much greater tribute than for people to laugh lovingly at your funeral.

Now that's a funeral! No god bullshit, and lots of happy smiling people.

I lose it every time he says Fuck! with that smug look on his face. Never fails to make me laugh
Wish I could earn the opportunity to be given such a goodbye, when time comes.

Too liveful to accept death.
You can tell that Eric Idle is trying to hold back tears.
Look at Cleese eyes while he is singing, his eyes are sparkling because of tears!
Totally. They all did their best but were hurting inside.
How immense is this.....
I have told my family I want this song sung at MY funeral...God Bless you ALL the Pythons!!

Wow thanks buddy! That was definitely needed
A flying media circus perhaps?
