    They were a good motor & many said if they stop leaking oil you had a problem. Well if you assembled them using cat green gasket contact glue they never leaked a drop for the life of the engine!

    My Dad had one of these used to pull a Semi tipper was beautiful truck to drive loved it had a 15 speed short shift box with 290hp Cummins.

    Love the Jimmys. I used to repair and overhaul GM's of all types. Personal favorite was the 653. Nothing better than a 653 turning 2300 rpm and no exhausts or air cleaner. Makes your skin crawl and chest vibrate. I don't know if this is a show pony or a working truck, coz it cant be competitive with new engines and trucks with regards to fuel consumption as the trucking game is tight with no real margins against other driver/ wheel attendants.

    Interior looks very original especially dashboard and looks good , like to see more of Interior panels ,,, recently rebuilt 1982 roadboss , every bolt cab diffs engine box all out or removed , but Interior we were putting back in it , bloody rats and piss , chewing fucked,, could you show inside more thoughly and outside mate, I've got a 1978 roadboss to reassemble when I return to work ,, which has been an full dissemble job too , both cummins power, both full Alcoa polished rims brand new to finish them , my boss is mega fussy with oldies , Holden or chamberlain tractors too , far to much to mention, I've painted truck chassis, s and chamberlain tractors, which were totally dissemble too

    Here's one for you: I used to test those 8/92's at a GM audit facility. I did a U.S. government mandatory test for emissions on them using an engine stand for the engine and a short driveshaft bolted to a 5 foot tall 600 Horse Power electric dynamometer. During the test all throttle and speed was controlled by an inhouse mainframe computer and it really put those engines thru their paces. If I remember correctly (it's been almost 40 years) the turbocharged 8V92's were 450 Horse power and around 1,650 Ft/Lbs Torque, and the top RPM was about 1,850 RPM. The exhaust was running thru a collection system to sample it, but the sound came right out. They could hear those 2cycle Diesels 100 yards away, clear down at the other end of the building inside the offices. They used to vibrate the concrete floor in the control room where I was monitoring the testing progress. I really liked doing that work for GM, but the management in that building didn't like employees being more knowledgeable on something than they were (all they did was practice baseball and golf) so they outsourced the testing to someplace called South West Research in Texas (or something like that) and then sold all of the test equipment for pennies on the dollar. But, I will never forget the sound of those huge engines going through their RPM's doing the tests. To give you some idea of what I listened to: The very first test was to do a horsepower/ torque map. To gather that information the first thing we did was warm up the engine at Wide Open Throttle, WOT, at rated speed (ie 1850 rpm) for 20 minutes. Then starting at WOT from 5% below "rated" idle speed up to 110% of "rated" top speed in 100 RPM increments we measured the torque. That information was used by the computer to create the test parameters. Doing each engine made certain each engine was running at "it's own" particular capability. Once that was done, we ran the engine through a "preconditioning" which was the same as the actual test, but no emissions were gathered. It was only to put the engine into a condition that was repeatable. Then we force cooled it until it was about room temperature and ran the actual test. It would rev up and down and hold steady RPM's and then up and down many many times duplicating an actual drive of an 18 wheeler driving across country up and down hills and across straightaways. The last test was called a "Smoke Test." It was preceded by a 20 minute warmup at WOT and rated speed again, but within a minute we had to get the engine down to normal idle speed and start the test. That test sounded just like an 18 wheeler going from clutch out at or near idle RPM, rev up to top RPM at WOT. Then let up on the throttle, and make a gear change, then back to WOT for a few more seconds. This particular test required a different exhaust system. The smoke density was measured with an archaic incandescent lamp shining through the plume of smoke as it passed through mid-air between the end of the exhaust pipe and the start of the exhaust collection system. The intensity of the light was measured with a simple photo cell. No other emissions were gathered during the smoke test. It was purely for determining the amount of particulate that came out of the exhaust during a working run of everyday work doing a gear change pulling a load. Those were the sounds I listened to for 8 hours a day 5 days a week for several years. One last thing: Somewhere on this here internet, there is a video of 2 18 wheelers passing by a microphone and camera. One is a 4 stroke and the other is a 2 stroke. The sound difference is amazing. The 2 cycle just seems to hum as it goes by, the the other one sounds like a helicopter, chop chop chop. It's quite amazing to hear. Only the guys who ran the 2 cycle Detroit's know what I'm talking about. I have tried to find that video, but it may have been on FaceBook or Instagram or I don't even know what, and I don't know how to work them too well. OK, Here's to GM, back in a time when there were frontiers to conquer and they stood up for the challenge. ben/ michigan
