Great hack! Just need a vice to make my own, haha. 35 bucks for only x2 is insane and unjustifiable.
ooooh thats neat
Thanks! Looking forward to trying this again around Christmas time with a little more light! 🎄
Nice lighting in the train & buildings.
Thanks! It was fun to set some lights out there! I'm planning to add some signaling next year, so that'll likely provide a conduit for even more lighting features. I need to work on my night time filming though 😅
I like the video, but the piano tinkling really distracts me. Please reupload this with banjo music from the 1940s, up to (but not including) October 1948. Thank you. J/k your videos are awesome!
Nice job!
Thanks!
_sigh_ I don't mean to be negative, but I feel like all we see is 4- and 6-axle standard gauge American diesels and "superpower" main line steam on pretty much every layout. Now, I get that it's kinda hard to find anything else in most scales, but G has probably the most accessible narrow gauge _and_ foreign models thanks to LGB, Piko, Bachmann and the various brass live steam brands. I wish more people would give stuff outside their comfort zone a chance. Still, this video shows some impressive models. I just wish there was more variety.
No worries! Thanks for watching and please subscribe, I think I may have something coming up that you'll really like! As an aside, I've been in largescale for so long, that when I started, the narrow gauge and Euro models were almost all you could get. 😂
Thanks, can you share what brand you get. I have run 2 hours on my 20 yr old makita 3000 on a leavel 100' loop with 8 cars and no smoke running, but I know that will be lots less when I start running outdoors next spring. Im using Blunami in a Aristrocraft RS3
Check the description. Though honestly it looks like mostly USA Trains with some scattered Bachmann, Aristo and AML in there.
@cab4word Try out RCS of New England for the best Li-ion batteries and chargers. RLD hobbies' batteries work well too!
Busy looking layout...thanks for sharing .Very nice assortment of cars
@seanmcgillicuddy956 Thanks so much! Yeah it's super fun to have a bunch of trains out there! We gotta pay attention some times though 😅
Another great video!! Thank you for having us all over!
Thanks so much for coming down and bringing the awesome trains! So much fun to have all that variety running and great to catch up with you again.
no train left behind
As it should be 😎
@@RockwallCanyonRR looks like a great day!
Once again the RCRR delivers! Good job to all the Railroad Magnates involved.
Thanks so much! Always fun when there's lots of traffic on the line!
The length of the freight train(s) is impressive for a model. But no caboose? Or aren’t they used much much in real life anymore? Edit: Ah, yes - I see a caboose.
Oh yeah, I had one gent over with a more modern train set which ran without a caboose. I generally stick to 1970s or older, that ways I can always tag a caboose on there if I like. I almost always do, just looks right to me. 🤓
love seeing all that Aristocraft rolling stock!!
Thanks so much! Aristo is definitely the majority of my rolling stock.
I love it, what do you use for power?
@@cab4word Thanks! These were all running on battery power. Most have Railpro for RC...while some were using Airwire900.
@@RockwallCanyonRR What size batterys do you run in the diesels ?
@cab4word 6700mah Li-ion and 4500mah NiMH (starting to phase out the NiMH, but the brand I bought live a really long time!)
Leaf peepers are everywhere!
My main complaint about g scale is the limited factory paint and models from more modern railroads. Or the pricing a certain 3 letter company does for Amtrak....
No kidding! I decided years ago to just make my own shortline scheme. That took most of the pressure off lol
Absolutely beautiful. Can you give me a link to the music please

My LGB mogul can’t climb more the 1-1/2% grade without slipping on a curve. Do steeper grades need to be only on straight sections?
@johnburk5087 I've owned a couple of LGB Moguls in the past and noticed similar issues. Rather than modify your track, my suggestion would be to swap out the wheels in the tender and cars to either LGB or Piko brand ball bearing wheelsets. This is especially helpful if you are pulling the LGB D&RGW-style coaches. Not only do the bb wheels reduce the normal drag, but they also can be used for lighting power pickup in coaches and caboose. I know they are expensive, but if your Mogul is regularly slipping, it's more likely that the gearing will fail prematurely, which would also be costly. As an added benefit, your other engines will live much happier lives as well!
thanks for the excursion a welcome break to the tornado and floods in the uk this weekend
@peteshoulders1 Oh no! We haven't heard much about it over here yet. I certainly hope you and all those near to you were spared damage.
@@RockwallCanyonRR thanks for your good wishes, nearby was flooded last weekend we escaped it but a few tree branches down, this year has not been the best for outdoor running so far cheers keep em' rollin
What about FP7 and/or FP9A
@railfandepotproductions Oh man I'd love to have a VIA FP9 in G scale! I used to work at Conway Scenic in New Hampshire and would occasionally ride the FP9s they had back then. They were great engines, but the low speed and heavy grades were not ideal for them, so they went on to Pan Am and now sit at CSX in Georgia awaiting future duties. If you havent seen them yet, my friend @gscalejake (on youtube) did a great job custom painting and detailing them in the Pan Am scheme!
What a beauty! RDCs look great too!
@OhioGrandma46 Thanks so much! The RDCs are among my favs!!
What company makes your green gp 9
@TYR-RailFan That's a USA Trains GP9 (Malden MA). It's custom painted in my own scheme derived from a blending of "Maine Central" and "New Hampshire Northcoast".
@@RockwallCanyonRR how did you do the ditch lights? And plow
@TYR-RailFan The sill-mounted ditchlamps are just very simple brass tubes with lamps installed in them. My 1741 has incandescent "grain of rice" lamps and the 1742 has warm white LEDs. My 1743 (show in this video) has no ditch lights, but does have "traction" lights under the cab frame. The plows and high mount bells are all cast resin details from Details by Eric.
@@RockwallCanyonRR it’s my favorite locomotive on your railroad
What locomotive is running the train?
Technically, both are "powered" engines, but in this case, the lead (GP9) has an onboard battery with a radio electronic speed controller (ESC), and the trailing engine (RS3) was just drawing power from the lead. I usually run the RS3 with passenger equipment in which the lead coach contains the battery and ESC it needs to operate.
Hi, RCRR---I have a number of the same plants on the J, L & DM RR and they all do well also. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the video and info.
Thanks so much!...but Dave, you have a lot more wisdom on this than I! Your layout is gorgeous and so well kept. I largely utilize the native weeds on my layout 🤣
I’m surprised you didn’t make mention of the Japanese Bonsai tree (or other East Asian equivalents), which is the first possibility that comes to this novice’s mind. But, I’m guessing they’re hard to come-by, prohibitively expensive, and probably too delicate for harsh-weather growth. By the way, do you try to pass off your nearby real trees to visitors as monster Sequoia trees? (If you’re a true scenery aficionado, you could carve out a miniature drive-through at the base of one, and position a model car passing through the carve-out.)
@terryv Oh absolutely! So I had to look it up to be sure, but the term "Bonsai" has more to do with the trimming techniques than the actual plant species. Japanese maples, Junipers, and Cypress are commonly used. If you ever visit a Japanese garden be sure to check if they have a Bonsai collection. I had the pleasure of seeing one at the Montreal QC Botanical Gardens and was blown away! Some of them are quite old, which adds an even deeper fascination.
Nice video, your layout is awesome. Everything looks great. Thanks for sharing. 🚂🚃🚃🚃
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your viewership!
Trains are the best
Nice assortment of cars; good videography & music selection.
@@terryv Thanks so much! It's been a fun summer, lots of train time 😀
Have some code 332 down already but, now it’s out of stock. Thinking strongly about code 250. Other than rail height, any issue with steel wheel flanges? Thanks and keep up the videos, great motivation!
@MarktheCheeseThief I've had no issues with code 250 brass rail for "LGB" size flanges. However, the trouble I have had is failing ties due to rail expansion. As such the only code 250 section I have now is a 90ft straightaway and it's largely in the shade. If you try to use it in the sun, just be careful how you anchor the track to account for expansion/contraction. The code 332 ties, oth, have a lot more plastic to anchor the rails. So which brand of 332 track is oos? If I were buying new track, (and cost wasnt a factor) I think I would only consider LGB and the flex track from Trainli.
Thanks for the information. Was using AML brass 332 flex track. Seems to be hard to find. Was looking for alternatives.
@markthomas6986 Ah yes, I have quite a bit of AML track...That's not a bad choice! Looks like you can still buy the rails and ties separately from them directly (site: livesteamstation), but it's not as good of a deal as their 5ft flex track usually.
Super. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
Hello from the Rockwall Canyon RR in New Hampshire! Thanks for watching!

Haven’t been able to recreate that weathering since lol
Oh gosh, that's not true...dont forget about the Conrail GP30 you did for me!
Is the engine programmed to stop at the station for recharging when its battery is low? Or do you have to go to the far end of the loop sometimes to retrieve it? (Or do you just play it safe and stop it for recharging when you guess that it’s time?)
@terryv I usually have a feel for how long they will run. I really try not let them fully discharge, but it's a long line and sometimes they get stuck out the there.
Lol. Yes. Can’t beat Thomas. 😊
What was that diesel model and its freight cars?
@alternative890 That's one of my custom USA Trains GP9s in my own Rockwall Canyon scheme. The freight cars are Aristo-Craft and the caboose is a USA Trains.
@@RockwallCanyonRR that’s awesome.
@@RockwallCanyonRR what about the Maine Central 501 and its passenger cars? What manufacturer made that and those passenger cars with it?
@alternative890 The engine is an AristoCraft Consolidation with custom lettering. The shorter coaches are AristoCraft and the observation car is USA Trains. All are custom painted and lettered.
@@RockwallCanyonRR oh ok nice.
Sooo Cool!😍
@@FozbearsHobbiesnMore Thanks!!
I have the up gp30 . Where do you say to go for dcc conversion?

Four words: I want, where get?
Haha..Alright, all one word: thetraindepartment.com/ 🤣 Write to Jason and tell him what you're looking for. The AML 0-6-0 is long out of production, but they do turn up used (that's how I got mine). He also sells other models new that are just as good. Thanks for watching!
This a really good prototype for a small-like toy train powered by flames...
😀I wish that was my daily commute
Seriously!! Thanks for watching!
I've been collecting model trains for 55 yrs. N, H.O. & G. Haven't lost interest yet & don't think I will. It's a great hobby for retirement as well. Sure beats sitting in a bar. Excellent video, stating facts as well. 🚂🚃🚃🚃
@popples4973 Thanks so much! I also have a little of N and HO saved from past layouts, but I've always had a love for G.
Nice view from the front. (Trim back that jungle!)
🤣 No kidding!
MORE OF THESE 🎉
Roundhouse Lilla started my collection, now I've got a Katie too. It's always funny when you go to clubs that have no clue how these work and won't let you run them because "they're dangerous"
Roundhouse is awesome! I haven't seen a Lilla in person yet, but I actually own a Katie! My only regret is that my kit-model did not come painted. I'm sure I'll do fine painting it, but I love seeing pictures of their finished models. Guess I'll have to buy another one 🤣
@@RockwallCanyonRR They're offering the 0-6-0 Katie and Billy now (if you look on their website, the picture of it is actually my locomotive). As for Lilla, she's taller but not as long or wide as a Katie and the chuff she produces will rattle windows 🤣
@Slickrope1924 That's awesome! I saw that on facebook awhile back. So is your Katie the blue 0-6-0 from the announcement?
@@RockwallCanyonRR Yep, that's her. You can tell by the lack of the rear buffer beam to make room for the tender drawbar. Nameplates should be arriving later this week so ive got a project to keep me occupied this weekend.
A pretty impressive length for a model freight train.
Thanks so much! I'm forever amazed at how durable these trains are!
What kind of run time do the live steamers have?
This specific model runs about 15 minutes after steaming up. After that, water from the tender needs to be injected into the pressurized boiler using a hand pump. If needed, the fuel can be recharged (and quickly re-lit). After a half hour or so, the steam cylinder oil can be drained and refilled under steam as well, but im usually ready for a break by then.
